I love the whole idea behind Whole Trade. Yes, it very well may provide stability and income for the owners and workers of the wonderful products that they produce or make. But, just by looking at the pictures above it sure looks as if there is a lot of hard work going into creating Alaffia's products. With that said, I can only imagine the back aches these women take home with them each and every day from all the bending and stooping they do on a daily basis in order to help produce these products.

I would like to say to you that you are truly a blessing to these women and I truly believe the Lord will continue to shine upon you, your family, and your co-op. Prayers and blessings to you all.

Learning about Alaffia is another reason to try their products. Thank you, Whole Foods, for providing this information, and being a part of making Alaffia a success. Through Whole Foods we can all be part of helping them.

The comment I submitted must have fallen in cyberspace. Anywhose, it went something like this (you are welcome to post it or have Melanny post it): I applaud your goals of "Advancing Gender Equality and Alleviating Poverty Through Fair Trade Shea Butter." How wonderful! There is a wise person who once said: "Whatever you can conceive, and believe, you can achieve." ~ Maharishi Mahesh Yogi You, and all your wonderful staff, are making it Happen! Akure, Firstly, our Alaffia Shea Butter Cooperative is Certified Fair Trade; this means that all people involved - from the cooperative members down to the shea nut collectors - are compensated at fair levels. We allocate a minimum of 10% of our sales to fund community empowerment in West Africa, the yearly average is 15%. The remainder is what is required to run the cooperative in Togo (including maintenance, transport of the shea nuts and finished shea butter within country, and overhead (electricity, taxes, etc...)); transnational shipping and customs duties; and repackaging, logistics and distribution within the US. As founders, my wife and I do not have personal savings and live on a modest income. Our belief is that poverty can be alleviated through fair valuation of indigenous knowledge and resources, and this is our motivation. Thank you for your concerns and interest in our organization.
