FAQs from our Global Office

By Nikki Newman, July 15, 2012  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Nikki Newman

As the receptionist at the Whole Foods Market® Global Support offices, I’m here to help set the record straight on recurring questions that I receive daily from interested investors, customers and potential new Team Members. Here are a few I’ve answered recently:

Q: “How do I apply for a job at in a store that’s still in development?”

A: As a decentralized company, each store or support office is responsible for hiring at their location. Once you check the list of stores in development to confirm we have a store opening in your area, reach out to the state’s regional office to get an estimated opening date. Keep in mind that opening dates are flexible and can be changed for a variety of reasons.  Stores generally start the application process roughly 45 days before the store opening. Hiring will start with store leadership positions first and then openings will be posted for entry-level positions. Continue to check our careers page for updated job postings. Several regions conduct job fairs for larger store openings so make sure and reach out to the regional office to see how their process works!

Q: “I would like to write a paper about Whole Foods Market for a summer course I’m taking, who can help me find information?”

A: Please understand that we simply don’t have adequate staff to accommodate requests for interviews with our Team Members or to fill out and return questionnaires. Our Customer Information Team is always happy to try and point you in the right direction if you’re looking for information for your project. To help you on your way, they've pulled together some of the resources most requested by students and where you’ll find that information on our website:

  • All of the sales and financial information we are able to share with the public is available in the Investor Relations section of our website. There’s a great deal of information there, and anything above and beyond what is there is in all likelihood proprietary.
  • We have tons of information about our benefits, hiring practices, and company policies on our Careers pages. Another great resource if you’re looking for information about working at Whole Foods Market is to search our Press Room for press releases about our placement on FORTUNE® Magazine’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” list.
  • Unlike many companies, we don’t have a traditional one sentence mission statement. Our Core Values reflect our company’s mission. You’ll find those in the Values section of our website.
  • We do not have a Corporate Social Responsibility report, but we do have a Green Mission Report available on our website. The bulk of our donation dollars go to our stores to work with organizations in and around their communities. If you have any questions about community giving at your local store, call the store and speak with someone in Marketing and Community Relations.
  • Information about what we look for when building a new store is available on the Real Estate page.

Q: “I make a product that I want to sell in Whole Foods Market. Do you carry products from small, local vendors?”

A: We love to support local vendors! Our company has decentralized buying which allows each region to work with vendors based on the shopping needs of their specific community. You’ll need to contact the regional office in your area for details on becoming a vendor in that region. We want local vendors to prosper, which is one of the reasons that we started the Local Producer Loan Program (LPLP). Take a look at the LPLP site is useful for vendor stories, program details and an FAQ page. To get an idea of the local vendors we support in your area, check out our Local Growers Map.

These are just a few of the questions I’ve received lately. I’d love hearing your specific questions and finding an answer for you. Leave a comment below with your question!

I think having the network of local vendors and farmers is what's going to give Whole Foods the edge over the other major supermarkets.

I´m Brazilian, and for years have been following the expansion and control of a specific segment in the american market. I really admire the company, and its development projects, with many new strores in USA and Canada. Questioning why the Whole Foods Market never turned to Brazil as a potential cliente, i would like to know if there is any plans for stores in Rio de Janeiro for example, a world wide recognized city for its concerns with organic foods and care for nature. This could be an opportunity, taking into consideration its few competitors and a growing consumer public. Regards, Kim

I manufacture brown sugar unrefined, Mascavo Sugar, with 100% molasses, in Brazil. This product is widely used for making integral breads, cookies, integral cakes, is also found in all health food stores in my country. How do I sell my product in 500 g packages in WHOLE FOODS MARKET? And, who would be The Contact? Thank you!

I recently moved from Colorado Springs, CO to Sturbridge, MA. Unfortunately, there are no Whole Foods Markets in this area. I traveled 44 miles last weekend to go to the WFM in Framingham, MA. The weekend before, I traveled further to Hadley, MA. That's how much I love WFM! With 1,000 stores as the goal, I am crossing my fingers that one of them comes closer to my new hometown.

Dear Headquarters: I currently work in retail at Prepared Foods in the Devon store (1202276DEV), located in Wayne, PA (Mid-Atlantic). I also go to Kutztown University and need to complete a writing based internship that starts on January 28, 2012. Is there a possibility I can apply for an internship position at my regional office in Rockville, Maryland or the northeast office in Englewood Cliffs, NJ? If there is no opportunity on a regional level for public relations, marketing, and/or something else writing related, would I be able to apply for a position in Austin? I would be willing to move down there and do a part office, part work in store program to compensate for teavelling and living expenses from mid-January through early-May. --Charlie

I am trying to find a Whole Foods contact to discuss locating a Whole Foods store in Coeur d' Alene, Idaho. We own a building with a 28,000 sq. ft. site and are currently in negotiations with Natural Grocers and Trader Joes. If Whole Foods Has any interest we will be happy to submit site details. This site and area are an ideal location for Whole Foods.

[SENT TO MATT - NN] I attempted to purchase a gift card from the Whole Foods Website. After completing my order, I received a pop up menu asking me to call Whole Foods to verify some personal information. When I called and spoke to LISA #1058, she asked for my credit card number, then the last four digits of my SS# and then started to ask add'l information which she said would be verified against public records. ARE YOU AWARE THAT THIS IS GOING ON. IS THIS REALLY LIGITIMATE - OR WAS I TAKEN IN A SCAM. If this is really your procedure, what are you going to do with this information. Fortunately, I didn't give the SS# or any other info. I think this needs to be thoroughly investigated. PLEASE GET BACK TO ME AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

I've been hoping since my cancer diagnosis to have a store local to my zip 46304. The number of cancer patients is skyrocketing here & the need/demand for organic nutrition is great. But it's been 6 years & I can't wait, so I'm writing to thank you for never coming through. I event went to your distribution center hoping it was a store only to find it was just an office. Since your store isn't available, I now know of a local sustainable farm & get personalized service at prices that are probably lower than yours. So I'm writing to thank you for never establishing your store here.

I am part of a leadership development group at my job (a government agency), and we are searching for a company or organization where we can meet and talk with the leadership team. We are planning our trip for sometime in the spring or summer. I suggested Whole Foods since I am a frequent shopper and know the morals and standards of the company. Please reply via email in regards to making our visit a possibility. Thank You.
