The Farm at Red Hill

The Farm at Red Hill is a small family-run farm located just eight miles from Charlottesville in North Garden, Virginia. Richard and Wendy Harrison, along with their two children, farm the dirt in season and utilize greenhouses in the colder months to ensure fresh  produce is available year-round. In addition to fresh produce, the Harrisons offer a line of fresh salsas, hummus, pestos, dips, and habanero jams. Note: Our Farm to Market slide shows currently feature farmers and producers from our South and MidAtlantic Regions. We hope to expand to others in the future.

I love hearing how a mainstream family has gone low tech! I wisj that I could do this in my life. What you are doing is great from a health standpoint as well as good for the environment. You must be a lot more relaxed as well as feel good about how you are treating the planet.

The Farm at Red Hill's black bean salsa is simply amazing. And addictive. I'm also a big fan of the red pepper hummus. Whoops, now I have to run out and get some.

I'm eating The Farm at Red Hill's gazpacho right now and had to let everyone know that it's The Best! I can't wait to get more. Thank you for such a delicious treat!

Thank you all for the wonderful and encouraging comments. We work hard at what we do and it makes it all worthwhile when we hear from you! Thank you again for your support of local farming and The Farm at Red Hill!

I absolutely love the sun dried tomato sour cream dip. It is sooooo full of flavor that your tounge experiences an explosion of sensations.

The Farm at Red Hill’s "sun dried tomato humus" is excellent. It is very textured, you can actually see and taste the "whole food" ingredients,... pun intended... ;) I visited A Whole Foods Market for the first time last week and bought some. I ate it with crackers, it lasted 2 days...

Hello - I love your original hummus and am using it in place of mayo on sandwiches. Since I'm watching my caloric intake, I'd love to know the nutritional information of a serving (and what the serving size might be). Thanks so much for such a terrific blend of subtle spiciness and great hummus! Best, Jennifer

The Farm at Red Hill says …

Jennifer thank you so much for your support! We have received several requests for the nutritional information. The reason it is not already on the containers is that we are so small, it is not required. We've been working on making sure we've got all the requirements down first and as soon as we catch our breath we will work on all the extras. We are really hoping that by the end of this summer we will have nutrition labels for all our products. Until then please know that there is never any added sugar, of any type, in our products. We use the least amount of salt possible to achieve peak flavor (and we use sea salt for the extra minerals). We also use the least amount of oil possible to achieve the best consistency and olive oil comprises the majority of that ingredient. Thank you again for supporting local farming and The Farm at Red Hill.

Hello! Greetings from South Jersey! Just wanted to thank you for your many samples of hummus, salsa, and dips. I, along with the rest of the staff, have been enjoying the different treats you have given us. My personal favorite, so far, has been the sweet pepper hummus and the tzatziti. Actually, as I type this, I am munching on some chips with the tomato basil hummus. Once again, thank you for you generousity! Caitlin, The Rodeway Inn

I just picked up some of your "Nuclear" salsa at the Whole Foods on P Street in Washington and cannot stop singing its praises. Thank you for making a hot salsa that is actually HOT, an especial rarity in this region (and time zone!). How long will it be in season? And does it freeze well?

Jason says …

Yeah, that Nuclear Salsa is awesome. Well done, Red Hill!

Mary Baylor says …

I just bought some of your Roasted garlic Hummas. Haven't tried it yet. I would like to know the nutritional breakdown of it. Calories, protein, carbs....serving size. Is that possible? Thank you...will be trying it any minute.

Just tasted the Black Bean Salsa and think it's the best I've ever had! So delicious! Please continue to sell it at Whole Foods in Reston, Va. (My daughter is at UVA, we may visit your farm someday)!

chris says …

Just purchased some nuclear salsa (P St., NW DC) and yes -- this is by far the only salsa I have ever had that comes close to hot in this region of the country. Fresh, floral habaneros with a mix of other vegetables -- how pleased was I to see entire disks of carrot in the mix as well? Bravo.

The Farm at Red Hill says …

Donna & Jane - We are very sorry you didn't enjoy the salsa, and we too have a 100% satisfaction guarantee meaning that if someone doesn't like the product they can return it to Whole Foods for a refund, and then we in turn refund the money to Whole Foods. Please note that our mild salsa is mild to our taste and compared with our medium and our nuclear it is indeed mild. Over the years of doing in store demos and speaking with thousands of customers we have concluded that no two people really taste "hot" in the same way. Compared with other salsa ours will definitely taste spicier as we use habanero pepper as stated on the label versus the much milder jalapeno or chili pepper that other salsas use. We acutally make everything ourselves on our farm in small batches using fresh product and fresh product does not always have the same taste/heat each and every time so there can and will be variations in the different batches. Please be aware though, that although the salsa may taste too hot to you, the pepper cannot actually burn your mouth! Again, sorry it was not to your taste, but if we could figure out how to make a product that would please absolutely everyone's taste buds I can promise you we would produce it! Wendy Harrison The Farm at Red Hill

Donna says …

I purchased your mild salsa. It was the hottest "mild" salsa I ever tasted. I'm assuming it was mislabeled or is your mild salsa that spicy?

says …

@Donna Yikes, hope you didn't burn your mouth. There's such a wide range for spice tolerance. We're sorry you had a negative experience. Whole Foods Market has a 100% guarantee. You can take any product back, within reason, for a refund. Just explain your experience to the customer service Team Member. Thanks for reaching out!

Catherine Stanley says …

We love your hummus lunches at Albemarle High. We look forward to them each week: original hummus on Tuesdays and sweet red pepper on Thursdays. Yummmm I hope the school includes your black bean salsa sometime.

Diem Nguyen says …

Just had your Nuclear Salsa and it was so delicious! Have you ever considered doing a spicy fruit salsa? I love pineapple and mango salsas but always find they aren't spicy enough. Would love the combination of these tangy flavors with your nuclear spice level. Thanks for making such an awesome product!

Nancy Gozzard says …

I just tried the amazing Hummus (with cayenne) -- such good indredients, so great tasting, and so reasonably priced. I will certainly try all of your other products for sale at my local Whole Foods. Thank you!

Laura says …

Your salsa is the best I've tasted, anywhere, period.

CvilleHummuslover says …

So I just bought some of your Jalapeno hummus on a whim at integral Yoga. This is far and away the best store bought hummus I've ever had and I will never buy another brand unless you stop making it, at which point I will probably drive to your farm & beg you to make more. :-)

Kim B. says …

Is there a reciepe for the the farm at red hill black bean salsa?

Nikki - Community Moderator says …

@KIM - Unfortunately, we do not have a recipe. I would suggest trying to reach out to the farm to see if they have recipes to share!

gene says …

I buy your your Gazpacho and really love it. However when I winter in Florida, I can not find it at my Wholefoods in Boca Raton

Nikki - Community Moderator says …

@GENE - Our options vary between stores. Definitely let the Boca store know you are interested and they can check if this is something they can carry!

Maureen says …

Does the whole foods in Charlotte nc carry the farm at red hills products?

Nikki - Community Moderator says …

@MAUREEN - I called the store directly and the Produce department had not heard of this vendor. If you were looking for their jarred items, I would suggest calling directly and speaking with Grocery so they can check on this for you.

Wendy Harrison says …

Maureen, Nikki - thanks for the comments. We would love to have our products in the store in Charlotte and are speaking with people in the area at this time. Customer requests go a long way to making it happen! Thanks so much for your support, small farms wouldn't exist without support from people like you!

Paul says …

I'm sure that some of The Farm at Red Hill's products are excellent. That said, I just bought their Chipotle Salsa at the Old Town Alexandria store -- it's an utter embarrassment: exceedingly mild and almost no smokey, chipotle flavor. What a waste of $5...

Nikki - Community Moderator says …

@PAUL - My apologies the salsa wasn't what you expected. I would definitely let your local store know so they can swap it out for you for a different brand or flavor!

Wendy Harrison says …

As the owner of The Farm at Red Hill I just wanted to let all of our customers know that we stand behind our products 100%. While we strive to make the best quality products we can we know it is impossible to please everyone's taste. That is why we have always offered a full refund (through the store) to any customer who did not like our product for whatever reason. In my 54 years I can promise you have I tasted more than my fair share of products that I didn't particularly like, but that didn't mean they weren't any good, I, personally, just didn't like them, and so did not purchase them again. The world would be an incredibly boring place if everyone liked the same food, drink, music or clothing. Diversity is what makes life interesting and a variety of tastes is what keeps customers coming back to the store to make new purchases. So Paul, we are sorry you didn't like the product, but we do offer the 100% guarantee so you just needed to tell the customer service team member you wanted a refund and they would have gladly given you one as we then credit the store for that item on our next delivery.

Best Tzatziki available in a store!!! I am obsessed with it. And it is lower calorie than most other Tzatziki's on the market. THANK YOU!!!!

Kim Bell says …

I have to drive pretty far to reach a Whole Foods store, but will gladly do it to buy the salsa made by The Farm At Red Hill. The freshness is amazing! LOVE IT.

Just fell in love with your original Hummus--the perfect amount of kick! Could you please make a larger size so we don't run out so quickly? haha Thanks for a fabulous product--found you at Whole Foods, Mason, OH

Heidi M. says …

Our family loves pesto for dinner and hummus for a snack, your basil pesto is by far the best that we have ever tried. We love the sun-dried tomatoes and basil hummus, it is fabulous! We will continue to buy your products! Thank you for sharing your hard work and passion with us. I truly appreciate this coming from a family of farmers!

Tim says …

I love your salsa from mild to nuclear. It's very fresh and tasty. The only thing I don't like is the carrots. Why do you put carrots? IMHO they detract from the flavor and do not have a place in salsa. I pick them out because the salsa is so good without them. Only thing I would change is to stop putting carrots in salsa. Other than that it's delicious.

Alix says …

I just wanted to say how much I LOVE LOVE LOVE The Farm at Red Hill's pesto. I'm house-sitting and have been given free range to the contents of the owner's refrigerator. I would never have known about the BEST PESTO IN THE WORLD on my own and I'm so glad I discovered you so I can buy your pesto on a regular basis. This product should be on display and sampled by patrons of WF because everyone needs to know about it!

Amy DeMarco says …

The gazpacho is out of this world! It's cool, tangy and zesty with just enough heat. IIm really enjoying it on this August afternoon. Thank you for such a great product! Do you share your recipes?

Nikki - Community Moderator says …

@AMY - Is this a recipe made by your local store? If so, check with your local store directly to see if they have a recipe to share!
