A L.I.F.E. Jacket for Your Coffee

By Liz Burkhart, November 16, 2011  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Liz Burkhart
A small town girl with a big appetite for travel, Liz joined Whole Foods Market in 2009 as part of the public relations team. This past June, Liz and nine other Whole Foods Market volunteers traveled to Kenya to meet Whole Planet Foundation’s microlending partners and work with Comfort the Children International, the nonprofit behind the L.I.F.E. Jacket project. Liz met the amazing women and children the program is empowering, and is excited that shoppers now have a way to get involved! Looking for a perfect little something for the office crew, a gift that gives back or a stocking stuffer your loved ones can use all year long? We have just the thing to rescue you from your holiday woes — a L.I.F.E. Jacket. This reusable canvas coffee sleeve is handmade by women in Kenya to help them earn a living and — for the first time ever — send their special needs children to school. With a fresh design and a great cause, this java jacket plays many roles. It keeps your drinks piping hot and protects your hands while keeping wasteful cardboard sleeves out of the landfill and helping to change a mother and child’s world — and all before breakfast! L.I.F.E. stands for Livelihood, Invest, Future, Empower, and that’s just what the products are helping poor mothers provide and do for their families. Want to learn more about these women, this program and the L.I.F.E. Jacket? Take a look at this video: Even better — the L.I.F.E Jacket is just 99¢ when you buy an Allegro beverage from one of our coffee bars nationwide. And the best part is that 100% of the proceeds go directly back to Comfort the Children International, the nonprofit behind this amazing program, to help Kenyans change their own lives. Pair this mocha mitt with a bag of Allegro Coffee’s Celebration Cafè 2011 Vintage Roast or a Whole Foods Market gift card and you have a complete gift for your favorite javaholic. Here are even more reasons to love the L.I.F.E. Jacket:
  • It’s hand washable, so there’s no need to worry about spills or drips.
  • The neutral color makes it easy to customize – make it your own with colorful doodles and designs or help out your barista by labeling it with your drink of choice. If you want to keep your options open, you can even use a washable marker so you can wash it off and start over with a clean slate.
  • It doubles as a can koozie.
While you’re at the coffee bar, you might want to pick up a few extras, because once you try this jacket out on your own brew, you won’t want to give it away. And at such a low price that supports a great cause, you can afford to treat yourself too. What’s your favorite gift that gives back? Photos courtesy of Chelseadee.com.

This is amazing. My husband, Larry and I cried when we saw this touching video- it just goes to show you that the smallest gifts can make such a tremendous difference. Thank you for opening our eyes and touching us in this wonderful way. So, where can we buy these if there is no Whole Foods Market nearby?

Are these life jackets available at whole foods markets nationwide? I would love to get some. Specifically Northern California Whole Foods stores.

These sound like terrific "extra" gifts or stocking stuffers...gifts you can actually use. I hope that I will find them in my Plano, TX store (and I trust that they are a better heat buffer than cardboard sleeves are)!

Can you make them available at all stores? Not just the ones with a coffee bar? I am working at a Whole Foods in Minnesota, a state where, sadly, we have NO coffee bars. :( But I would love to buy them and give them as gifts - and I'm sure I'm not alone. Thanks!!

Thanks for letting everyone know about the L.I.F.E. jacket for coffee. Otherwise, it might have been a secret for much longer. Are the jackets available for sale without a purchase? I don't remember seeing a coffee bar at my local Whole Foods Market, so I certainly would have missed the jackets.

If your store does not have a coffee bar, the bakery or specialty dept should have a couple air pots available with coffee in them, L.I.F.E. jackets will typically be found near those air pots.

This is a great little gift for the coffee drinker and it will fit on your re-usable cup and for the summertime it works well on those pesky sweating glasses, too. I plan to buy one with every purchase to give to all my friends. What a great idea to generate funds for education and empower these women for the future. Love it!

Thank you Whole Foods for leading the way with such a "humanitarian cause" for Children!! LUV the L.I.F.E. jacket. Such a simple concept that will leave a lasting impact on the lives of all family members also affected by special needs loved ones. More importantly "Special Needs" kids are always worthy of all the LOVE, attention and concern related to long-term healthcare needs. Will purchase several at my local Whole Foods in Los Angeles (westside). Thanks!

What a great idea! My husband and I have begun limiting our waste. It's been a gradual process, since we take small steps over time. So it's nice to know that a small change like this one can make such a big impact. Thanks for opening our minds and our hearts.
