Since pigs are relatively intelligent animals, I am particularly interested in how they are treated. I would like to buy one of your hams but would not enjoy it unless I knew that the animal was treated humanly, not only by what it was fed but how it was treated while living and at the end.

@MARY - Since this blog post went out, we have been working with the Global Animal Partnership to certify our producers' animal welfare practices. We've rolled out their 5-Step Animal Welfare Rating Standards in every Whole Foods Market store in the United States and Canada. You can find more info at http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/about-our-products/quality-standards/animal-welfare-standards which will explain the step rating. You can check with your local store next time you stop by to see which step their pork products fall under.

What is the sodium content in your hams

Nikki - Community Moderator says …

@SALLY - It really depends on the vendor of ham. If it's something that is packaged, your local store can find out the sodium content for you. Just call them directly and speak with the meat department.

Are the pigs GMO soy/corn/wheat feed ?

Nikki - Community Moderator says …

@EMANUELA - If you are looking to avoid GMOs I would recommend looking for organic options since GMOs are prohibited according to the USDA Organic standards. We have announced GMO labeling for our stores so by 2018 all meat items will be labeled whether they were fed GMO feed.

How much are your spiral cut and non cut hams? I've never been to the whole foods market.

Nikki - Community Moderator says …

@KIM - We would love to have you stop by for your first visit! Our prices differ between stores so it's best to call the store directly that you plan to shop with. They will be happy to let you know the price for their ham options.

My local store says they won't have a ham in store and cannot order one for either! I am unbelievably dissapointed!

Nikki - Community Moderator says …

@RICHELLE - I'm sorry to hear this. Can you let me know which location this is and I'm happy to follow up with them.

Bill says …

Do you have any hams that do not contain sodium phosphate?

Nikki - Community Moderator says …

@BILL - Phosphates are an acceptable ingredient in our stores. I would suggest reaching out to your local store to see what ham options they have in stock that do not carry sodium phosphates since our product options differ.

Are your hams organic and are they free of nitrates

Nikki - Community Moderator says …

@PATRICIA - Our stores should have organic ham options in stock. Check with them directly to find out what varieties. We do not allow any added nitrates in any meat we sell in our stores.

J. Harrigan says …

I'm glad to see you have a spiral sliced ham, but I need to know specifically how much sodium is in each serving. Without that, I can't buy it.

Nikki - Community Moderator says …

@J - I would suggest checking with your local store so they can check if their vendor has nutritional info available.
