Rumba, Mambo and Cha Cha Cha

THE CONTEST IS NOW OVER AND WE WILL ANNOUNCE THE WINNER SHORTLY. THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR COMMENTS! Read on to enter to win a 12-CD set from Putumayo’s Latin Collection. Dan Storper is the CEO and Founder of Putumayo World Music. As a young kid growing up in the 1950s, I remember watching my parents and their friends dancing the mambo and cha cha cha. While these weren’t styles they’d grown up with, it was easy to see the joy the music brought them. By the time Desi Arnaz aka “Rickie Ricardo” of I Love Lucy fame arrived on TV, these styles had become global phenomena and were being danced in every corner of the world. Fast forward to today and they’ve made a powerful comeback on TV dance shows and in dance studios and night clubs from Austin to Aberdeen. Just in time for Cinco de Mayo, Putumayo’s new release, Rumba, Mambo and Cha Cha Cha, demonstrates the universal and lasting appeal of this retro-flavored music. And, since it provided the mellower underpinnings of the salsa boom that occurred a couple of decades later, it has similar appeal that brought global acclaim to the  Buena Vista Social Club artists. As an indication of the music’s global popularity, this collection not only features several groups from Cuba, but also Latin bands from Scotland, Belgium, France and Russia. Rumba, Mambo, Cha Cha Cha is now available in many Whole Foods Market stores along with other Putumayo Latin and international CD collections. So, what’s your favorite Latin music style? Leave a comment below by May 4th for a chance to win a 12-CD collection from our Latin series. THE CONTEST IS NOW OVER AND WE WILL ANNOUNCE THE WINNER SHORTLY. THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR COMMENTS!

If I could only dance while driving it would be a fine day. Thank you so much for keeping my heart soaring and fingers snapping. I am 67, but when this music is on I am instantly 30 years younger.

Latin music is a style that you can't help yourself but to stop and dance. I have a great love of this music and only grew during my years living in Texas. Today when I just can not pull myself together after a long day at the office or just feeling blue, I turn on some great Latin music, dance around and BAM!!!! Smiling bright and well buring calories as well :)

Pat Piinkston says …

Cuban music of the 1940s and 50s ala Tito Puente. If it sounds like Ricky Ricardo at the Copacabana, then I can't help but want to dance dance dance! How fun would it have been to live then and be able to see those bands in person!

I was introduced to Latin music at a Manhattan ballroom studio and it was love at first step. Every style is unique and interesting that you can't help but move to the music. I used to go crazy for salsa and mambo, but now that I'm a woman of a 'certain age,' I prefer moving to the rhythm of rumba. I would love to win this collection to help me remember my glory days and to keep me young and dancing at age 50-something.

Sandra says …

OH!!! Favorite?? Well, my favorite Latin-style dancing is Salsa and Bachata. So any of those types of music I LOVE and will move my hips to!

Claudette Masters says …

When I think of Latin music, bright colors and joyful faces come to mind. I imagine being outdoors in a tropical environment and partying late into the evening. The rhythm of the mambo makes it hard to stay seated - you just have to get up and move! It's as if the music pulls you out of your seat and takes possession of your body causing you to shift and sway in ways you might not have ever believed possible. If you need your mood uplifted, listening to Mambo is guaranteed to do the trick.

Lisa Polito says …

Bachata! The salsa class at the Y didn't have enough students so the put everyone into Bachata! 4 beats instead of three and LOTS of fun!! We've been to the Guitar Fest in Zihuatanejo a few times and it's fabulous! Latin music is the music of love and laughter!!

Natalie says …

My kids and I love all kinds of music. We haven't been exposed to that much Latin music, so winning this would be wonderful!

Reva Smilkstein says …

My earliest recollection of dancing the cha-cha was to "Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White" when I was a pre-teen. Fast forward about 25 years later, I naturally picked up the Latin rhythms and hae been a salsera ever since. This is my kind of music and would love to have the Rumba, Mambo, Cha Cha CD to add to my collection.
