Wallaby Yogurt

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR WINNER MARY FROM MADISON, WI. THANKS FOR ALL THE COMMENTS! We love our producers, suppliers and vendors and we think most of them have some pretty interesting stories behind their products too. We’ll be sharing some of our favorites here in an ongoing series. Read on for a chance to win a $50 gift card. Doug Beretta is a family man. He’s one of four generations in Beretta Family Organic Dairy, a supplier of organic milk for Wallaby Yogurt. The dairy is based on a ranch that was bought in 1948 by Beretta’s grandfather, where the pasture-raised cows graze today. According to Beretta, the advantages of pasture-raising their cows are many. “You’re able to utilize your own land for feed. Organic feed costs are starting to get very expensive so we’re able to use our land to produce as much of the feed as we can.” In addition to the nutritional value of feeding cows on the pasture, “being on grass instead of concrete is a lot easier on the feet and legs of cows,” says Beretta. Wallaby’s founders were looking for family farms and pasture-based dairies with this type of commitment to their cows and their milk, so partnering with Beretta Family Organics made perfect sense. What do you think about the changes that Beretta Family Organic Dairy made when they switched from conventional to organic processes? Watch the slideshow above and leave a comment with your answer by September 9th. One comment will be chosen at random to win a $50 gift card to our stores. Click here to check out Wallaby’s products or visit our stores to taste them for yourself. We carry their full line of organic yogurt as well as their outstanding sour cream!

I love Wallaby yogurt and so does my son. I bought it originally as an organic brand to try, but it instantly became a favorite in our house. I enjoyed learning the history of both Wallaby and Beretta Family Farms. I'm glad to see our ancestors practices put to use again--the natural way is always going to be the better way.

I always enjoy hearing the story behind the food. So many people are so removed from the sources of their food today that it is really refreshing to feel like you know where your food comes from. These look like happy cows! Thank you for sharing this story with us.

I love that the cows' feeding became more efficient after the dairy switched to organic processes. People often think that organic farming has to be more expensive, but here, the Beretta family seems to be considering a more sustainable option for feeding cows by growing the feed themselves.

Allison Hahn says …

Good for them! Glad to see someone looking out for their animals. I love Wallaby Yogurt!

Nancy Scricca says …

The cows look so happy to be out in the pasture! It paints a beautiful picture of how these farms are creating a happy life for these cows and providing us with a healthy product to boot!

Wallaby produces a wonderfully unique yogurt in the US. I was pleased to see that Wallaby is located in the Napa Valley region and uses local dairies from that area. Napa Valley has great farmland and from what I understand a great community of farms and families that have lived there for multiple generations. The only thing that I would be concerned about with Baretta Organic Dairy is if there is a difference in the quality of milk produced by cows that have always been raised and treated organically versus cows that have some history of non-organic treatment but that was discontinued. This is probably a small issue whis is sufficiently addressed in doing what it takes to earn the designation of organic. Thank you Wallaby, for all you do!

Jady says …

Wallaby yogurt is delicious! Congrats to Beretta for making the change to organic -- I'm glad they made the decision to be more sustainable and ethical!

Dara says …

It was a great a change and the fact that they didn't have to feed them as much and that the cows seemed overall more calm and happy to be producing milk at their own pace.

Elizabeth says …

It's important for our future generations. These things have to happen slow and once it becomes a fad, we will be better off.

Nicole says …

I'm pro pasture-raised cows

Margaret Dozier says …

I love the container almost as much as the the product in it.The change to organic is only a good thing todo and makes me feel safe as a consumer of their product.
