Eastern Carolina Organics
Located in Durham, North Carolina, Eastern Carolina Organics operates a farmer-owned, organic produce distribution center.
ECO was started in 2004 to meet the demand for professional, reliable and convenient access to North Carolina organic produce. Launched as a project under the Carolina Farm Stewardship Association, ECOs founders believed that a produce company could exist with all the traditional components of streamlined services but with a grower-centric focus and a commitment to building direct relationships between the producers and consumers. Now in its ninth year, ECOs success has challenged the common belief that wholesale organic volume can’t be local and artisanal.
ECO will be using the funds from their second Local Producer loan to upfit a newly purchased warehouse located in Durham, NC. The expanded space will be used as the “ECO-Hub” for all produce grown by their farm collective in the East Carolina region. ECO has a vision to surround this new ECO-Hub with other like-minded businesses and organizations working around issues of sustainability and community empowerment and the building will host a myriad of other environmentally sustainable demonstration projects.
