Located in Raleigh, North Carolina, Nellino’s is our very first Biodynamic® certified loan recipient! Nellino’s produces incredibly delicious vegan, gluten free, no added sugar, cholesterol free tomato sauces made solely from whole U.S vine-ripened tomatoes. Nellino’s is using the funds from the LPLP to develop and produce a line of U.S-grown, U.S.-made Biodynamic® tomato sauces created from tomatoes grown under contract by Whitted Bowers Farm, a family-owned North Carolina certified Biodynamic® and Organic farm.
Nellino's Sauce was born in 2010 in Neal "Nellino" McTighe's kitchen with his now wife Heather by his side. While Nellino might not be Italian, his love of the country runs deep. So much so that he lived in Italy for three years, earned a PhD in Italian, and has taught Italian for twelve years. The idea for Nellino's came to him one morning, "Why not share my love of Italy with as many people as possible?" The rest is history. The first jar was sold online in January 2011 and it first appeared on a Whole Foods market shelf in August 2011. Since then Nellino's has grown rapidly into one of the leading premium tomato sauce companies, gaining many loyal customers and rave reviews. The Nellino's mission is to create the world's most outstanding and innovative tomato sauces and to be a better business by fighting hunger through a partnership with the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina.
Nellino’s Biodynamic tomato sauce will join a growing list of venerable organic food companies bringing Biodynamic products to Whole Foods Market store shelves, including Amy’s Kitchen, Lundberg Family Farms, Lakewood Organics, and The Republic of Tea. But Nellino’s will be the first company who is funding this line extension through the loan program, further deepening Whole Foods Market’s investment in this great project that connects the retailer, the processor, and the farmer together in a unified effort to contribute to this emerging Biodynamic marketplace.
