Bodacious Blueberry Recipes
Sometimes the side dish is the main attraction of dinner, especially during larger gatherings. Our healthy sides skip a lot of the fat and salt sides are often known for, without removing flavor.
We’ve got the blues — blueberries, that is! We love these little bundles of flavor all day long. That’s right, blueberries are great for more than just healthy breakfast recipes, they can also add a sweet-tart twist to lunch or dinner.
Blueberries are native to North America but now grow all over the world, allowing us to enjoy their flavor all year long. Whether you enjoy the small wild blueberries of Maine or the large, plump berries of Texas, blueberries are a wonderful addition to many recipes and give you a boost of fiber and antioxidants.
Blueberries have a hazy white “bloom” on them, but don’t worry — the berries form the bloom as a protective shield against the sun. Wash the berries only when you’re ready to use them to keep them fresh, and be sure to remove any wayward stems that might have made their way into the package.
If you’re using blueberries in baking recipes, toss the dry berries in a bit of flour to help keep them from sinking to the bottom. Adding an acid like buttermilk or lemon juice will add tangy flavor and also help keep your berries looking beautifully blue after baking.
Try them in salads or turned into a sauce for roasted meats like turkey or pork tenderloin.
