Savoring Heirloom Tomatoes
Heirloom tomato season is one of the best times of the year — at least in our opinion! Heirloom tomatoes, which are long-lived varieties that have been carried on through the years, are full of unique flavor. While heirloom tomatoes might look a little crazy, we can assure you that those bumps and odd colors are part of what make them special!
Heirloom tomatoes often come into season later in the summer, as many varieties need more time in the hot sun to develop and ripen. The longer wait is worth it, as heirlooms are meaty and full of even more tomato flavor than the standard tomato.
We love to use heirloom tomatoes in recipes where the tomato really shines, especially in fresh salads. Heirloom tomatoes don’t need much extra, but are excellent when paired with other seasonal ingredients like cucumber, peppers, and fresh basil. Or, just slice them up for the best-ever BLT sandwich!
