Quality Standards
Standards that aren’t standard anywhere else.

We don’t sell just anything. The products we sell must meet our rigorous standards. From basic ingredients to farm animal welfare, seafood sustainability, body care, cleaning products and more, trust us to do the research so you can shop with peace of mind.

Food Ingredient Quality Standards
We have Quality Standards in place every day, in every aisle. We don’t allow hydrogenated fats or artificial colors, flavors, preservatives or sweeteners — and that’s just for starters.

Produce and Flower Standards
Our Responsibly Grown rating system was developed to address some of the serious challenges facing agriculture today—from pest management and farm worker welfare to water conservation and the protection of pollinator populations.

Animal Welfare and Meat Quality Standards
Our meat comes from animals raised with no antibiotics, ever. The farmers and ranchers we partner with are committed to animal welfare standards.

Seafood Quality Standards
All of the fresh wild-caught seafood we sell is rated for its ecological sustainability. And our farmed seafood standards prohibit antibiotics, pesticides in the water or feed, or algaecides on the nets—and the fish are never genetically engineered.

Body Care Quality Standards
Currently, there are 50 ingredients common in conventional body care products that are not allowed in any body care products we sell. That includes phthalates, microbeads, triclosan, BHT, BHA, aluminum chlorohydrate, and many more.

Dietary Supplement Standards
We are committed to offering research-driven dietary supplements that provide a proven track record without also having artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners and hydrogenated oils.

Organic Body Care Standards
Since there aren’t mandatory government standards for the "organic" label claim on body care products, we set our own high standards. In our stores, any body care product making an organic claim is required to have certification.
Organic Body Care Standards
Premium Body Care Standards
A select number of products carry our Premium Body Care symbol, which indicates they are the most exceptional personal care products available. They meet the strictest standards for quality sourcing, environmental impact, results and safety.
Premium Body Care Standards
Organic Food Standards
All organic food products sold in the US are required to meet strict USDA Organic Standards, which ensure they are grown in environmentally friendly ways, without toxic or persistent agricultural chemicals. The European Union and Canada have similar definitions of organic.

Cleaning Product Standards
There aren’t mandatory requirements for listing ingredients on cleaning products, so we developed our Whole Foods Market Eco-Scale™ rating system based on environmental impact, safety, efficacy, source, labeling and animal testing.
