5 Thanksgiving Menus: Traditional to Vegetarian

Gluten-Free Pie CrustOne of my favorite things about Thanksgiving is collecting recipes and dreaming up a menu. (And yes, I do this even when I’m not the hostess.)

Years ago my aunt Elizabeth, a pastry chef and graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, hosted Thanksgiving. Many of us at the table were new to Texas so she welcomed us with a twist on tradition and served up a turkey dinner filled with the flavors of the Southwest. Over that delicious (and spicy!) meal we imagined future Thanksgiving themes and what she should serve: an Asian inspired meal with sriracha-laced sweet potatoes or a tropical menu with pineapple and mango added to the cranberry sauce. We went on and on letting our imaginations and our taste buds run wild.

My husband’s family, on the other hand, sticks with their tried-and-true recipes. And that’s just as delicious in my book. I look forward to Aunt Linda’s pumpkin rolls every year (she still refuses to share the recipe!) and we all still laugh about the time Grandma made a green gelatin salad instead of her usual red and the uproar it caused.

So whether you want to try something new every year, stick with classic faves, or you’re cooking up a vegan or gluten-free feast, here are five menus to inspire you.  We encourage you to mix and match, browse all of our turkey recipesholiday recipes or search our full recipe collection to find just the recipes for your own Thanksgiving celebration. Happy planning!

Already ordered my Whole Foods turkey. Excited to try the Golden Roasted Turkey, but it links to the potatoes and the other turkey links to a salad. I tried to search the database but that turns up empty as well.

Where are the vegan options? I could always adjust the vegetarian but wasn't sure if this was a misprint? Thanks!

What about fully cooked vegan thanksgiving fare? There's a 200 plus vegan Thanksgiving happening in Santa Rosa, CA and we need fully cooked tofurkeys or field roasts stuffed with vegan stuffing for the event!

@EILEEN - You can check our online ordering option at http://shop.wholefoodsmarket.com/store/Fully-Cooked-Entr-es/Savory-Stuffed-Turk-y-P3930C1547.aspx, for a fully cooked vegan option. Which would require reheating. The items can vary between locations so I would suggest calling your local store to see if they will have enough of your desired entree.

The "Herb Crusted Turkey Breast with Mushroom-Leek Stuffing" link goes to the Ginger and Jasmine Tea-Poached Pears recipe. I tried searching for the turkey breast recipe but it came up with no results.

@NANCY BENTSEN: Hi, thank you for your question. Each store sells different products, if you don't see something online I suggest calling your local store and asking for the Holiday Table and they can research it for you! Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

kathy wilder says …

I was wondering if you have a small thanksgiving dinner for 4 people besides the one for small crowds advertised--small regulr thanksgiving dinner

Nikki - Community Moderator says …

@KATHY - Each store should have ala carte options in the store so you can buy as little or as much as you need. Typically our prepared meals will start for 4 people. You can find out what your local store exactly has on their menu at https://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/online-ordering.

myra grand says …

Some of my visiting family has dietary restrictions! Thinking ahead about next year's Thanksgiving, I was wondering if you make dinners to go that are gluten-free and vegan? It was a real challenge this year. thank you. myra

Nikki - Community Moderator says …

@MYRA - Our holiday menu options will typically include a vegan meal for Thanksgiving. At this time we do not have dedicated gluten free kitchens. While some dishes do not contain gluten ingredients, we cannot certify it is gluten free due to cross contamination. I hope this helps and best of luck next year!

jan burnett says …
