Do Something ReelIn April we proudly launched the Do Something Reel Film Festival, an online collection of provocative, character-driven films that focus on food, environmental issues and everyday people with a vision of making a world of difference. Simply put, it’s a celebration of people who understand that small steps can create big change. The Do Something Reel Film Festival continues this month with Delicious Peace Grows in a Ugandan Coffee Bean, which tells the inspiring story of interfaith peace through coffee.

In a nation once plagued by violence and intolerance, Christian, Jewish and Muslim coffee farmers formed a cooperative to build peaceful relationships and economic development. Living in the lingering wake of the Idi Amin regime of terror and intolerance, these organic farmers in Uganda challenged historical obstacles by forming the “Delicious Peace” Cooperative. By partnering with a Fair Trade US buyer, the farmers’ standard of living is now improving and peace is flourishing.

Delicious Peace Grows in a Ugandan Coffee Bean is their story. Narrated by actor Ed O’Neill, this 40-minute documentary captures not only the actions of a small group of interfaith organic farmers in a rural Ugandan community but also their international impact. By modeling harmony, messages of peace and fair wages are spreading to their US customers. Watch this clip and see what the buzz is about.

Curt Fissel, the film’s director/director of photography/editor, has been Director of Photographer and Editor at JEMGLO Productions for more than 15 years. He has been cinematographer, editor and producer of nearly 30 documentaries that have garnered him and the productions the Cine Golden Eagle, NATAS nominations, Silver Tellys, and many “best of” awards.

I find it hard to reconcile the theme of peace in Uganda with the fact that this nation has laws that make it a capital crime to be gay or lesbian. Maybe what holds all of those organized religions together is a shared bigotry toward one powerless group.
