Eat Green

Want to bring a little bit o’ luck to your table? This time of year, green is literally popping up in the garden in the form of tender lettuces, sweet peas and the soldier-like asparagus standing tall.

Green foods are just what we need after a long, cold winter. Its freshness livens and invigorates the table. And who can resist the simple perfection of a pea?

Your refrigerated produce shelves are rather narrow or shallow, which means less room for large vegetables. This usually also means that your leafy vegetables get pushed very tightly in there, and it is sometimes just so unfortunate to try to shop for leafy greens that sometimes ultimately look like they have been through a war. Shoppers take them and then return them to the shelf, and the leaves get smashed in there. Small shelves also means your produce department often cuts off the green leaves from your bunched tubers and roots (to make them fit on the shelf) -- particularly your red beets. And yes, these beet leaves and stalks get thrown out to the trash. This speaks volumes about the quality of your vegetables and how they are presented for sale. Nevermind that your prices can be sky high, but the most annying thing of all is coming to a shelf so full of beautiful beets that are missing their stems and leaves. Every time that happens, I leave your store without the vegetables that I came to buy. They are on the shelf alright, but I am not going to spend a dime on vegetables that are missing all the important parts. This is not some kind of a store-bashing message. But I am rather disgusted by some of these produce traditions at Whole Foods Market. So much for "Eat Green..." Good luck getting the green.
