We love our producers, suppliers and vendors and we think most of them have some pretty interesting stories behind their products too. We’re sharing some of our favorites here in an ongoing series. UPDATE: Thanks to everyone that entered. Congratulations to our randomly chosen winner, Gary!

Rip Esselstyn, creator and author of The Engine 2 Diet, is also a former firefighter, triathlete and son of a physician. It’s no wonder he’s passionate about health and wellness.

“My father conducted research around heart disease and diet,” Rip explains. “I’ve always been inspired by the work he does.”

Rip spent a decade as a professional, world-class triathlete and 12 years as a firefighter. He first developed the plant-strong diet for his colleagues at Station 2 in Austin, Texas, and the results were dramatic.

“We had some guys who were overweight or had high cholesterol and together we turned that around,” Rip says. “They learned that plant-based foods could fill them up without filling them out with minimal salt, low fat, no added sugar and minimal processing.”

The fire station success story garnered national media attention, and a New York Times best-selling book soon followed. Then in 2009, a partnership with Whole Foods Market® led to the development of an exclusive line of Engine 2 foods (starting with hummus, salsa and organic crispbreads) designed to make it easier for more people to transition to a plant-based lifestyle.

Rip’s mission is to encourage people to eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans, and the Engine 2 product line is a natural fit with Health Starts Here®, Whole Foods Market’s healthy eating initiative.

Rip's Big Bowl cereal brings together a bountiful blend of four wholesome whole grain cereals: rolled oats, shredded wheat, wheat berries, and sprouted grains nuggets. These core ingredients are topped off with the omega-3 all-stars: ground flaxseed and walnuts. For added goodness, we include big, bold raisins in Rip's Big Bowl Original for extra sweetness in every bite! It's a filling and healthy way to start the day.

What changes are you making for the New Year?

My husband is into his 23rd post-quadruple bypass year. No accident!! Healthy diet and exercise is our mantra. We do 5ks and walk briskly when the weather turns nasty:) Organic fruits--at least 3 and aim for 5; nutritious cereals and breads for breakfast--can't wait to try Engine 2; wild caught salmon is a favorite and an occasional beef based spaghetti is featured on our menu. Throw in a meaningful, thoughtful pursuit of knowledge with an engaged social circle and life doesn't get much better than this. Cheers!!!

I love beans, my kids are so so, and my husband doesn`t like them. I`m going to try sneaking them into some dishes they really like by slightly mashing them up and see what happens. Also going to cook bigger portions of veggies and make sure there is fruit in the fruit bowl every day.

I watched Forks Over Knives and also Rips documentaries on the Engine 2 diet. I found them interesting and life changing. My best friend just told me this week she is going to do the 28 day challenge so I"m so thrilled for her and just know she'll be successful. If I win the case of cereal I will surely share it with my best friend :) By the way....my husband and I have both lost over 20lbs each by changing to a plant based diet!

Would love to see this catch on in fire departments across the US. As the wife of a Georgia firefighter, I have seen the toll the job takes on the mind & body. Fueling up with the right foods is key. We made several good changes last year to better our health and plan to continue on that path in 2013. However, it is hard convincing my husband to lay off the junk in his down time, would love to try your new products to get him hooked!

Approximately one year ago when my weight hit 245 pounds, I decided to make life style changes, both in my diet and exercise. To date I am now at 215 pounds with a goal of breaking 200 pounds. I was was brought up meat and carbs, now however, I eat salads vegetables and fish with no where near the amount of meat I used to consume. I watch my sugar intake as I am border line diabetic. I would love to try your cereal for both myself and my son. Thank you.

Im planning on cutting back on red meat and "white" foods (white flour, white potatoes, white rice). Im looking for a breakfast that will fill me up with fiber and nutrients to give me energy in the morning. Sounds like this Engine 2 Rip's Big Bowl Original Cereal is a great way to start the day...and the year! Looking forward to giving it a try. Cheers!
