Engine 2 Foods

We love our producers, suppliers and vendors and we think most of them have some pretty interesting stories behind their products too. We’re sharing some of our favorites here in an ongoing series. UPDATE: Thanks to everyone that entered. Congratulations to our randomly chosen winner, Gary!

Rip Esselstyn, creator and author of The Engine 2 Diet, is also a former firefighter, triathlete and son of a physician. It’s no wonder he’s passionate about health and wellness.

Engine 2 Foods

“My father conducted research around heart disease and diet,” Rip explains. “I’ve always been inspired by the work he does.”

Rip spent a decade as a professional, world-class triathlete and 12 years as a firefighter. He first developed the plant-strong diet for his colleagues at Station 2 in Austin, Texas, and the results were dramatic.

“We had some guys who were overweight or had high cholesterol and together we turned that around,” Rip says. “They learned that plant-based foods could fill them up without filling them out with minimal salt, low fat, no added sugar and minimal processing.”

Engine 2 Foods

The fire station success story garnered national media attention, and a New York Times best-selling book soon followed. Then in 2009, a partnership with Whole Foods Market® led to the development of an exclusive line of Engine 2 foods (starting with hummus, salsa and organic crispbreads) designed to make it easier for more people to transition to a plant-based lifestyle.

Rip’s mission is to encourage people to eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans, and the Engine 2 product line is a natural fit with Health Starts Here®, Whole Foods Market’s healthy eating initiative.

Rip's Big Bowl cereal brings together a bountiful blend of four wholesome whole grain cereals: rolled oats, shredded wheat, wheat berries, and sprouted grains nuggets. These core ingredients are topped off with the omega-3 all-stars: ground flaxseed and walnuts. For added goodness, we include big, bold raisins in Rip's Big Bowl Original for extra sweetness in every bite! It's a filling and healthy way to start the day.

On January 2, 2013 I watched Hungry for Change and Vegucated on netflix and decided to switch to a plant based diet and stop drinking diet pepsi. I've been drinking diet pepsi for 30 years. I have high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Then I watched one of your shows where you went into families homes, went through their kitchen of bad foods, then cooked a days worth of meals for them with plant based healthy foods. It was totally inspiring and what I need to help with the success of eating a plant based diet, as it is a big change and a bit overwelming. It's been 10 days with no diet pepsi, eating only plant based food, and drinking water! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge; I look forward to learning more of your recipes and ideas!!

After watching our bodies change for the worse by eating processed food, my husband and I have started Engine 2. We are relying on a total plant based diet and have total faith in Rip. Having Rip's big bowl would help us tremendously on our journey.

Genetics play a big role why my husband is diagnosed with diabetes a couple of years ago since both his parents are diabetic. This year, I want to try new healthy food to add to our pantry that me and my 4boys(daddy included) would love. Can't wait to try this!

My husband and I both need to start a healthier diet. Our kids are off at college now. We tried the Eat to Live diet a year or so ago and felt so much better on it, but it was hard to maintain. I like the idea of a plant based diet, especially if it will help bring our lab values back to healthier ranges. Having foods that are ready to go would be really helpful for our lifestyles. My husband has a large "beer belly" and really needs to get rid of that. I also have lots of additional "padding" around my mid section that I would love to get rid of as well!

Been a vegetarian for over 20 years. Engine 2 documentary inspired my meat-eating husband to go vegan, then he inspired me. Have been cutting out milk and cheese and trying vegan alternatives. Miss my half/half in my coffee, but has switched to soy creamer. Baby steps, but I am on my way.

I found your almond milk in Whole Foods and was so grateful to find it had been minimally "enriched" w/ extras. In particular, w/calcium. I recently found out I have an excess of calcium in my body, a dangerous situation. Because of that, I can't drink dairy, and, from what I can see on the shelves, almost every plant milk out there. Engine 2 Plant Strong has only 2% calcium, thankfully. I realize "calcium enriched" is a big selling factor but not everyone needs 30-50% calcium added to their milk. To see plant milks all have that much calcium is very discouraging to me, especially since these milks didn't have that much (if any) calcium to begin with. What happens when people change and can't handle calcium any more, like me? I'd be happy to find plant products just as they are, without refinements, enriching, separations, etc. Not always an easy thing to do. Thanks for keeping your almond milk simple. I bought 6 boxes to start with.

As a retired RN I saw, for many years the end results of bad nutrition & the diseases that resulted. I proclaimed to my family & friends that the next big health breakthrough would be nutrition and its connection to disease. Well it has taken a much longer time than I anticipated but finally last July my son sent me copies of the documentary & the book, Forks over Knives. After eating plant based for a week, I felt so much more energy, my "brain fog" disappeared & I'm a changed person @ the ripe old age of 73. I just saw my Dr. (to have my prescription refilled for B.P. medicine), my BP had dropped from 140/90 to 110/66, even tho I never had a cholesterol problem, my lipid panel improved. My kidney function #'s improved, probably due to wt. loss of 16 # & decreased B.P. I am 5'5" & weighed 168, am now l52 & still losing (slowly), I feel better today than when I was in my 50's, am active& much more flexible & stronger. I'm trying to convert as many people as I can, it's slow going as even people who have obesity related health problems declare that they can never give up meat & dairy. The few who have converted to a healthier lifestyle can't thank me enough for "educating" them. I'm thinking of starting a support group in my home. Thank you Rip Esselstyn, Dr Caldwell Esselstyn & Dr T Colin Campbell!

@MARGOT - Currently, the E2 frozen grain medleys as well as the E2 Sprouted Ancient Grain & Brown Rice Tortillas are certified Kosher. I passed along your question to the E2 team so certifying more products in on their radar!

I bought your granola "Plain Jane Granola" at Whole Foods yesterday and tried a bite of it out of the bag. My God it tasted HORRIBLE!! I ate another bite and then took the bag and smelled it and it literally almost knocked me over! It was RANCID BEYOND BELIEF!!!!!! For the rest of the day my mouth was burning, no matter what I tried to do! This is totally unacceptable!! This stuff is going back to the store tomorrow and I will never try Engine 2 products again. I don't want to be mean. But this was just a nasty experience!!!!!

Jane says …

My husband surprised me with a bag of Plain Jane granola. I had it this am for breakfast and it is awful! I could only get a hint of cinnamon and the rest was as flavorful as I imagine cardboard would taste.
