ErewhonAt Whole Foods Market®, we love sharing good food and drink. Whether it’s peak-of-the-season fruit, a team member creation from our bakery, or a new grocery discovery, we love celebrating great flavors and products. But we don’t just want to tell you about it; we want you to enjoy it too, which is why we’re giving it away!  Read on to find out how you could win some free stuff. UPDATE: Thank you to everyone that entered. Congratulations to our winner, Marika, from Massachusetts!

The name is quite a mouthful, but your tastes buds will love this crispy organic and gluten-free cereal with a hint of maple sweetness. Erewhon Supergrains Buckwheat and Hemp Cereal is a super-charged combo of two nutrient-dense ingredients: buckwheat and hemp seeds.

What’s in It?

Buckwheat, despite the name, is naturally gluten-free.  Another fun fact is that it isn’t actually a grain, but a pseudo-cereal from the same family as sorrel and rhubarb (don’t worry – it doesn’t taste herby!).

As for hemp seeds, while they do come from the cannabis plant, they do not have any intoxicating properties.  They are, however, rich in omega 3, 6, and 9 fatty acids, and are naturally high in protein and fiber. One serving of this cereal delivers 5 grams of fiber (about the same as 9 broccoli florets) and 6 grams of protein (about the same as one large egg).

Cook a Crisp with Cereal

You’ll love this cereal for breakfast with some almond milk and it’s a great one to have on hand for guests staying over during the holidays.  It can also be used in more creative ways!  Check out this recipe that can make for a crowd-pleasing holiday dessert.

APPLE BUCKWHEAT CRISP

  • 6 firm apples (try Braeburns, Galas, or Gravensteins)
  • ¼ cup maple syrup
  • ½ teaspoon ground ginger
  • 140 grams (about 1 cup) gluten-free all-purpose flour mix
  • 1 cup Erewhon Buckwheat and Hemp cereal
  • ¾ cup packed brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter*, cut into 1-inch cubes

Preparing to bake.  Preheat the oven to 375°. Grease a 9x13 casserole pan with butter or a neutral-tasting oil such as canola.

Preparing the apples. Peel the apples, cut them into quarters, remove the cores and put them into a large bowl. Drizzle the apples with the maple syrup and the ginger. Toss to evenly coat the apples. Pour them into the casserole pan.

Combining the dry ingredients. Put the flour, cereal, sugar, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg in the bowl of a food processor. Pulse until the ingredients are mixed and the cereal is somewhat crushed.

Cutting in the butter. Add the butter to the food processor. Pulse until the butter is in pieces the size of lima beans. (Some might be smaller, like peas. That’s fine too.)

Baking the crisp. Distribute the crisp topping evenly over the apples. Bake until the apple slices are tender, the juices beginning to ooze, and the topping a golden-brown, 45 to 55 minutes.

Take the crisp out of the oven. As soon as it is cool enough to eat, serve.

*For a dairy-free alternative, use ½ cup cold dairy-free buttery stick.

I was privileged to taste this cereal at a Vegan conference, and I was BLOWN away. I think it might be the best boxed cereal I have ever had! Go for it.....It's mealy, substantial, and full of protein.
