Hiball Energy Drinks

We love our producers, suppliers and vendors and we think most of them have some pretty interesting stories behind their products too. We’re sharing some of our favorites here in an ongoing series.

Todd Berardi was always a work-hard, play-hard kind of a guy. As an investment banker, technology salesperson, skier and mountain biker, he was consuming energy drinks by day and by night, but he grew tired of the syrupy-sweet taste that never really quenched his thirst.

Todd longed for a refreshing drink that lived up to his standards, and when he couldn’t find one anywhere, he decided to quit his day job and invent it himself.

Hiball

“In 2004, I came up with Hiball because I knew there had to be a better way,” Todd says. “I wanted something more refreshing, something not syrupy, something with ingredients you can feel good about.”

Todd formulated Hiball Sparkling Energy Water with no artificial ingredients, zero calories, no sodium, no sugar and no sweeteners. The Hiball energy boost comes from a blend of organic caffeine extracted from organic green and black tea leaves (derived through the process of decaffeinating the tea), organic ginseng, organic guarana and B vitamins.

Hiball also recently added two sparkling, juice-based flavors made with the same organic energy blend, organic juices and Fair Trade sugar.

Hiball

Hiball is a close-knit team of three based in San Francisco, CA. Soon after he began selling Hiball, Todd met Dan Craytor, who was working for a beer distributor. The two became fast friends and Dan joined the company as director of sales. Directly after founding the company, Todd hired graphic designer Alyssa Warnock, who created Hiball’s logo and most recently the cool aluminum cans that change color when the temperature drops below 45 degrees. (Todd and Alyssa were married in 2006 and are now raising twins!)

“We’ve been doing this for six years now, and what I love most about my job is the fan mail,” Todd says. “People are amazed that an energy drink can taste this good and refreshing — without calories, sugar or artificial ingredients.”

What do you love about Hiball?

[DIRECT RESPONSE - NN] Hi Could you tell me how to contact the blog editorial team? Im a professional party planner and have some editorial I wanted to pitch to them. I've tried using the contact us form but it keeps failing - it asks me to complete a word verification but there isnt one shown. Am hoping a comment moderator will respond to the this message to point me in the right direction. Many thanks Matt

I haven't tried Hi Ball just yet, (mostly because I don't have a Whole Foods close to me), but wanted to tell you that I love your story. I think it's great when people find alternatives that are wholesome and not full of chemicals and other "stuff" we can't pronounce. Good for you and many wishes to your continued success!

Thanks for the background! Although I'm not a huge energy-drink person (no, not even coffee), I occasionally imbibe and I always go for the more natural variety of energy drinks (think Yerba Mate or Guru). I've tried Hiball in the past and enjoy the 'non-taste' of their beverages. Now that I know more about the purity of the product I'll be inclined to knock back a Hiball or two more often!

This stuff is AMAZING! I hate coffee, but I need the caffeine as a grad student. Other energy drinks scare me or taste awful. Hiball is the perfect solution for me, and it really keeps me awake! My favorite flavor is the wild berry water, although I haven't tried the juice yet. Can't wait to check it out!

I love these drinks. Dont care much for the sparkling water ones, as I dont see much difference than if I were to add my own caffeine powder myself to a La Croix or something similar. They are, however, on to something with the other drinks being 100 calories per can, providing great energy with a crisp refreshing taste. I wondered if the name would hold them back a bit, though. Hiball makes it sound unhealthy, in my opinion. When most people hear hiball, they think 'isnt that like some big alcholic drink?'.
