This winter, give one of my favorite breakfasts a try: fresh grapefruit sections drizzled with raw honey and garnished with roasted walnuts. Simple, quick and refreshing! Grapefruit also makes a great snack or dessert like in this Cherry-Rooibos Steeped Grapefruit opens in a new tab recipe that combines dried cherries with grapefruit, steeped in honey-sweetened Rooibos tea. Serve as is or spoon over Greek yogurt or ice cream for a special treat.

Grapefruit is very versatile and equally good when cooked as when eaten raw. Its acidity provides a nice balance to creamy counterparts; for example it’s a perfect addition to a salad containing oil, nuts or avocado, like in this Avocado and Grapefruit Salad opens in a new tab.

Whether you prefer white, pink, Ruby Red or Star Ruby (the darkest red) varieties, here are some ideas for enjoying fresh grapefruit this winter:

  • Add to a crisp winter salad. Roasted nuts, dried fruits, roasted root vegetables, fresh grapefruit and an olive oil dressing is wonderful.

  • Grapefruit and Beet Salad opens in a new tab combines red grapefruit with beets and mint. Mix it up by replacing the beets with roasted carrots, parsnips or rutabaga.

  • For a protein-rich salad, Spiced Salmon with Papaya, Grapefruit and Avocado Salad opens in a new tab is a good choice.

  • Add to a favorite smoothie, like this Sunny Citrus Smoothie opens in a new tab. If you have a juicer, try a combination of apple, grapefruit and ginger (and perhaps a little parsley, too). Delicious and healthy!

  • Use grapefruit zest just as you would lemon or lime zest in muffins, quick breads and cookies.

  • Spread grapefruit sections with your favorite nut or seed butter such as peanut, almond, cashew or sunflower seed.

  • Use grapefruit sections as dippers for your next chocolate Fondue party. Or simply serve with a square of chocolate. The flavors go perfectly together. Try grapefruit with our Chocolate Dipped Anything opens in a new tab technique.

  • Make a winter fruit salad with apples, pears, grapefruits and other citrus fruits. For variety, add dried figs, dates, candied ginger and a sprinkling of roasted pecans or pistachios.

  • Blend chopped peeled grapefruit sections (or grapefruit juice) into salad dressings in place of or alongside vinegar or lemon juice. Grapefruit with honey and either walnut oil or extra-virgin olive oil is divine.
