Start the Year with a Cleanse

By Malia Curran, January 9, 2013  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Malia Curran

CleanseThe beginning of a new year is one of my favorite times because of just that – new beginnings. A fresh start. It’s a time that inspires changes for the better; for our health, happiness, and let’s face it, just plain sanity.

This time of year calls us to clean out and refresh. Time to clean house, so to say, and let’s not stop at closets, toys, or old files. Taking it further to include a body cleanse, and the accompanying mental motivation for lasting healthy habits,  is a win-win way to begin the year.

Where to start?

A whole body approach — one that goes beyond digestion — is most effective. The digestive system is the main focus of most cleanses. That means you avoid certain foods and beverages and incorporate others while taking specific supplements (see tips below) that aid the digestive process. But also key in the cleansing is to care for your other body systems like the skin, blood, lungs, kidneys, liver and lymphatic system. Rest, healthy foods, tonifying nutrients, herbal extracts, breathing, exercise, and pure water are all ingredients for smart whole body cleansing.

Why is it helpful?

Basically, cleansing helps the body be more efficient in the “housecleaning” of toxins collected in everyday life.

Simply breathing and “being” create toxins that need to be eliminated along with all the daily substances that we inhale, ingest or absorb from the environment, food and products. (Think food additives, medications, caffeine, alcohol, cigarette smoke, building materials, compounds in plastics, synthetic chemicals in body care and household cleaners, pollution, etc.) Stress and inflammation add to the load, creating the endless “to do” list for the body’s cleansing system.

When is it time?

The body sends signals that it might need some detox help: headaches, digestive discomfort, skin problems, chronic fatigue, low energy and weight issues. Periodic focused cleansing (up to 4 times per year for many programs) helps your body’s detoxification system recover and rejuvenate to operate more efficiently.

Top 5 Cleansing Tips:
1. Support your liver.

This hard-working organ filters all the blood in the body several times a day,

Transforming toxins so they can be eliminated by your body. To cleanse the liver, experts suggest lessening daily toxic load and including liver-supportive herbs:

  • Milk Thistle contains silymarin for liver cell protection and regeneration; its antioxidant power helps scavenge free radicals during cleansing.

  • Dandelion Root stimulates the gallbladder, kidneys and liver for more efficient removal of toxins. It increases the production of bile, which aids toxin elimination.

  • Artichoke Extract is closely related to milk thistle, and contains the liver-protective compound cynarin.

2. Drink water.

Hydration helps to moderate hunger and wash away toxins. Add lemon or unsweetened cranberry juice to stimulate digestion. Also enjoy “cleansing herb” teas such as dandelion, licorice, peppermint and chamomile.

Probiotics3. Eat right. Eat light.

Get your nutrients and fiber. Eat lots of green foods, cruciferous veggies and cleansing foods (beets, artichokes, lemons, onions, garlic, cranberries, apples, avocados, spinach, berries and oatmeal). Avoid artificial ingredients, hydrogenated fats and highly processed foods. Avoid caffeine, sugar and alcohol. Eat smaller portions and go organic.

4. Get extra help from supplements:

  • Probiotics support your immune system and intestinal health while replenishing healthy gut flora.

  • Enzymes are complex proteins that break down food particles into nutrients.

  • Gentle, natural laxatives and fiber aid digestion and elimination.

5. Take it low and slow.

Increase circulation and breathe deep with low-impact exercise like walking, stretching and yoga. Try and reduce your workload and slow down your activity level. Avoid stressors and rest!

It would help to have a list of recipes from your website that are applicable to the detoxifying procedure. Perhaps many list with links.

@LISA - Other than the info listed above in the post, we do not have other literature. Check with your local store to see if they have any handouts in addition to this post that you can have!

@DIANA - We do not classify our recipes based on detoxifying elements. We allow users to search based on dietary needs. If you are able to find foods that are detoxifying, you can conduct a search for recipes on our site at http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/recipes.

I can remember being far more regular when I was eating yogurt on a consistent basis. I assume it was the probiotics. Not sure if yogurt is the best way to get my probiotics or supplements or how much of either is right for me. I was told by a nutritionist that the acid in fruit can kill the probiotics in yogurt. Is there any truth to that? I've been using Enzymes (papaya) for a few months but it doesn't seem to be as effective as the probiotics.

I've never done a "cleanse" before. I would like to try this. What do you recommend I use as a first timer?

I tried Dr Oz 3 day cleanse before Thanksgiving. He suggests using probiotics and what I loved about it was all the fresh ingredients I was eating. The smoothie receipes are great even if you're not cleansing. I highly recommend the breakfast and dinner shake for snacks to get you back on track when not cleansing.

Along with the 5 tips above do you suggest an actual cleanse before hand? For example should we do like a two week detoxic cleanse and then after we complete that cleanse we do the 5 tips above to help maintain our cleanse?

@TRACEY - I would recommend that you talk with your Whole Body team member about your options. They will have some great ideas for your first time to do a cleanse!

@TOI - To my understanding, that is exactly what she is referring to. I think the 5 tips would be ideas for cleaning if you were not conducting, say, a pre-packaged cleanse. If you purchase a pre-packaged cleanse, they often times include some of the herbs she mentions in step 1. Definitely speak with your healthcare provider before changing up your diet drastically. Also, team members in Whole Body at your local store can offer other advice and recommendations as well!

After years of battling stress and anxiety, my body is telling me its time to do something. I have a 1 year old daughter who needs mommy at her best. I am trying to change my life by changing my thoughts, asking God for help and carefully considering food choices and healing my Gut to get my hormones in check. Hopefully after applying these principals ( similar the the makers diet which I am drawing guidance from) I will be Jackie 2.0 and have the strength and courage I did before my physical/mental health went out of whack! (all without prescription meds.)

I purchased this cleanse product but there were no instructions. I see on the box that there are three "steps" but I'm not sure if I do those in chronological order by DAY or throughout the cleansing process. Do I do step 1 until that is complete and then move on to steps 2 and 3? Sorry, I'm just a painfully literal person.

@BECKY - I would suggest calling the store where you purchased these to speak with the Whole Body team directly. The instructions will more than likely differ depending on the type of cleanse you purchased and they will be happy to help!
