Achatz Pies

By Ashley Heaton, October 22, 2010  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Ashley Heaton

Chesterfield, MI Achatz’ 100 employees know how to make a pie. All-natural and created by hand, their pies are as close to homemade as you can get. They’re proud that roughly 95% of their pies’ ingredients – the peaches, strawberries, rhubarb, pastry flour and beet sugar – are local to Michigan. Achatz Pies are perfect for Whole Foods Market shoppers, who know that what they’re buying is free of hydrogenated oils, chemicals and preservatives. You can also pronounce all the ingredients. Achatz Pies look delicious. They look like pies one would imagine a grandmother would make. I love that they use natural ingredients-that are mainly local too-looks tasty!

I think we are more concerned with whether or not there is any GMO ingredients, first and foremost, and this includes in the crusts as well. Then we ask if there is any kind of Sucralose/Aspartame/NutraSweet, then was it it made with fluoride free, chlorine free- pharmaceutical-heavy metals free water. And lastly do they use any baking soda with aluminum or aluminum products. Any UNfermented soy, be them organic OR GMO would also be a concern of ours.

Sounds great, but it really bothers me that I see them mushing their hands all in the pie dough without wearing clear, thin plastic gloves... and they don't mention about, or show the people washing their hands before touching the food. The other thing... dirty ovens- they could at least put a baking sheet on the bottom to pull out spill-over to avoid smoke residue on the fresh pies. Not just complaining- I used to work in and run a bakery.

I am familiar with the pies. They don't use any sweetener besides agave, cane sugar, and fruit juice. The pies don't have any baking soda in them. And the filling is made from scratch using fresh fruit or IQF locally grown fruits. I know that on their website they list that they are FDA certified.

I had my first Achatz Double Crust Blueberry Pie the other day. My friend Mark who is from Michigan brought the pie to Chicago. I love the pie! Best Blueberry pie I ever had! I had to find out where you sell your pies and I found Whole Foods Market. I shop at Whole Foods, but never bought any desserts from there, but I'll be looking for your pies! Thank you!
