All that Jazz - Kid's Version

Jazz-Playground-CoverChristian P. is our randomly selected winner of the 5-title Putumayo CD collection. Thanks everyone for your entries! Putumayo Kids just released what's destined to be your kid's new favorite: Jazz Playground. From bebop and swing to Latin and African jazz, this multicultural CD celebrates the vibrant diversity and global influence of jazz and will get the whole family grooving. (Read on for a chance to win some Putumayo CDs.) I've loved their Playground series since my daughter was young and would play a CD over and over and over again. We quickly realized that Putumayo CDs pleased her as well as us! It turns out that Dan Storper, founder of Putumayo, had that exact plan in mind:
With our children's series, my professional goals and responsibilities as a father of a 4-year-old son seem to merge. I'm always looking for songs that William will love and, despite playing scores of time, won't drive my wife and me crazy. Jazz Playground is filled with lots of loveable, jazzy songs that are great fun for kids but which parents not only can bear but may even press the replay button for themselves. One of the songs, Cumbamba, by Cuban-American, Jose Conde, was recorded especially for this CD after I'd heard a scratchy, early version that I thought would sound nice if re-recorded. The cross-cultural collaborations and tasteful versions of children's favorites like Sing a Song of Sixpence, Mary Had a Little Lamb and the Spiderman theme song make this a one of kind musical journey that the whole family can appreciate.

I'm not sure we listen to any one thing incessantly but probably the closest we come is They Might Be Giants' "ABC's" and "123's."

I don't have any kids, but I have 16 2nd grade students! Does that count?! We listen to Putumayo cd's all the time in our classroom and we do the project with the putumayo passports. They LOVE listening to Putumayo's Caribbean Playground, Women of Africa, African Playground and One World (they usually choose Women of Africa when reading). I love listening to them sing along in another language while they are writing.... even if they don't know what they are saying :)

Lucy's favorite cd right now is the Putumayo kids world playground cd! Aside from that, Ben Harper can make her stop in her tracks!!

Ariah Fine says …

It's not a music CD, but we listen to stories by Robert Munsch. As for music we listen to Derek Webb Stockholm Syndrome a lot.

Before I even read what you were giving away, I was getting ready to write: Putumayo World Music. How cool is that???? Wow, thanks for giving away such a great gift. I hope we win. Fingers (and toes) crossed! ♥

My daughters (3rd and 5th graders) and I love listening to Green Day's American Idiot (not necessarily entirely appropriate for their ages, I know, but great music!) We had it playing in the car for weeks. The 5th grader also loves Coldplay, and the 3rd grader loves the Beatles!

My daughter and I listen to the last Michael Jackson CD. She came to love him through me and that is super.

Monera says …

Well our kids are early adopters and they have pandora stations that they control and program from the roku. Really it is easy, and one great thing about pandora is that Putumayo is already a station.

My kids are 3 and 1 and there are 2 CD's we play nonstop, one in the car and one at home. The first is produced by Music For Little People: Ted Jacobs' A Child's Garden of Songs. It features the poetry of Robert Louis Stevenson (A Child's Garden of Verse) set to beautiful Celtic music and we all love it! The second is "Songs for Saplings" by Dana Dirksen. It teaches children simple Bible verses to remember and Dana's pure, clear voice and sweet, simple acoustic guitar, along with the precious harmony of the childrens' voices, is a favorite in our home.

AndreaT says …

We have Rocknoceros "Dark Side of the Moon Bounce" on constant rotation - it's fun, educational, and hip/rockin' enough my husband and I don't get sick of it.

krista says …

My kids love Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz, They Might Be Giants and Barenaked Ladies. My 7 y.o. son is a huge fan of Josh Groban. They also listen to Laurie Berkner quite a bit. Oh yeah, Dan Zanes too. We love all kinds of music here :)

Jen S. says …

Oh, and, not trying to get an extra entry, but I forgot to add that we love Putumayo music too and I have been using World Playground with kids (I used to teach) for almost 10 years! My son loves it. Our close ties are with Animal Playground (my son begs for "No More Monkeys Jumpin' on the Bed!") and Celtic Dreamland...the song on there by Susan McKeown has a very special meaning for me and my daughter, and I even emailed the artist personally for a translation from Gaelic, which she graciously provided. I am so grateful to Putumayo for putting beautiful, world-wide folk music out there that we can all learn from! My kids are so musical and I love that they aren't limited to the same 5 songs I knew as a kid...you know, "Twinkle Twinkle", "ABC's", "A Tisket, A Tasket"...

Christina Smith says …

We listen to Putamayo's Celtic Dreamland all the time because my daughter has a hard time going to sleep :) Would love some Jazz!!

My daughter insists on listening to only "Fascinating Creatures" by Frances England whenever we are in the car. My daughter is 3 years old and it's the perfect mood music for her, fun lyrics and lots of recognizable terms. She laughs out loud when she hears "Blueberry Pancakes" because there's a line that sings about flipping the pancakes in the air with the blue berries in the sky... Love it!

peg carmen says …

The Curious George Soundtrack is the favorite in our minivan, for both my kids and myself!

Bonnie Curtis says …

Little Bird CD by Elizabeth Mitchell is my daughter's favorite. We have given several of these CDs as baby gifts.

Helen Kowalchuk says …

My son and I listen to many of the Putumayo cds. They are fantastic, adults and playground ones. The kid's cd that we listen to the most is Ziggy Marley's Family Time.

Shelly Sanabria says …

My 7 year old daughter LOVES Michael Jackson's THIS IS IT. She listens to it in the car & @ home ALL the time. HELP! :-)

Jen Holland says …

Medeski Martin and Wood have a great children's album that I play at school, I teach 3 and 4 year olds. "Let's Go Everywhere" with everything from a Nursery Rhyme remix to new takes on Schoolhouse Rocks favorites!

Sharon says …

Van Morrison's greatest hits has been on repeat now for the past month. Domino is our son's favorite song.

Marisa says …

We listen to the Mother Earth lullaby CD often! Love it!

Angela says …

Right now the must listen to CD for my child is Rockabye lullabies (Nirvana).

Stephanie says …

My son and I love all of Clay Aiken's CDs (new one coming out in June!), we love Kansas, Boston, Journey, and lately my ds (who is 7) has been on a BeeGees kick! When he falls asleep at night, he listens to NPR, they're usually playing classical, but sometimes play jazz or bluegrass. My son has taken quite a liking to jazz, which surprised me. :)

London says …

Putumayo African playground will be heard about daily in this house hold!

Troy says …

Josh Groban helps calm our baby every time he fusses, must be because mom listened to it non-stop during her pregnancy.

Belinda Gross says …

I love Joanie Bartels music, especially her Lullaby Magic album. My mom played it to me as a baby and while I was growing up. I like how it's so soft and soothing. This music is like comfort food for my soul. Some jazz would be nice to spice things up though.

Denise.EatPlayLove says …

Elizabeth Mitchell My Little Bird is one of our favorites, but nothing gets us through the afternoon like a little Michael Franti. We are big Putumayo fans as well (French cafe for tea parties!). Great giveaway.

Jana says …

My 4 year old son LOVES listening to Paul Simon's greatest hits. It's on repeat through breakfast, lunch and dinner! I don't mind, because I love it too!

Lynne says …

My daughter loves Singable Songs for the Very Young by Raffi, especially 'Going to the Zoo' or 'The Zoo Song' as she calls it.

Christina says …

My 3-year-old son loves They Might Be Giants' "Here Comes Science". He's got all of the songs memorized.

Jessica says …

Several Putamayo compliations are on regular rotation at our house, but particularly Music from the Winelands, Gypsy Caravan and Swing Around the World. All the Cuban CDs are fantastic also!

Karyn says …

We still listen to the Jack Johnson/Curious George CD, as well as Elizabeth Mitchell. They Might Be Giants is a favorite as well as most anything sung by children.

Jennifer Tatler says …

My three-year-old is a three-year fan of French Playground. The only other CD/artist she listens to with equal conviction is Paul Simon. And, you know what? I'll take it. I think I enjoy it as much as she does -- and I cherish the fact that she prefers it to the usual toddler/pre-K fare she's so often bombarded with. We'd love to discover and experience more that Putumayo has to offer!

Chris says …

My kids (12, 10 & 2) love the Beatles 1, AC/DC Back in Black, Michael Jackson's Greatest Hits, Tom Petty Full Moon Fever and Enya Shepherd Moon. So glad that their tastes are so diverse...I don't go nuts listening to the same thing over and over.

Catherine Rodrigues says …

We have a CD where the Disney Characters sing traditional kids songs. We listen to that one a LOT. We also have the Putumayo Reggae Playground CD that my son and I both love.

Cara says …

In our house, we listen to kid and grown up's music. Most recently, we've been listening to a newcomer to the kid's music scene from Connecticut - Ryan SanAngelo - who is also an author. His book is Spaghetti Eddie which is a very cool story about Eddie who loves spaghetti and uses it to help people! His CDs are even cooler with a very grown up, rock n' roll feel - Play All Day! and Awesome, Dude!!! www.ryansanangleo.com
