Choose Good Household Goods

By Allison Burch, April 5, 2011  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Allison Burch
During Earth Month, and really every month for that matter, it’s all about reduce, reuse, recycle! While I am totally behind figuring out how to reduce waste by going reusable (I recently found a super-cute, washable fabric wrap for my kiddo’s sandwiches) there are times when I just need to use something that’s disposable. Um, a trash bag comes to mind. So, when that’s the case, I prefer to look for items that a) are made from recycled content, b) do not whiten with chlorine bleach, c) use conscientious packaging or d) work well. It’s even better when I find a product that has more than one of these features and is competitively priced. That’s why this line-up of household products from our exclusive 365 Everyday Value® and Green Mission™ brands is really good news. I get lots of choices that meet many of my criteria but won’t break my budget. PAPER PRODUCTS • 100% recycled paper (80% post-consumer recycled content) • Whitened without chlorine bleach • Hypo-allergenic and fragrance free options Green Mission™ Choose-Your-Size Paper Towels 365 Everyday Value® Choose-Your-Size Paper Towels 365 Everyday Value® Paper Towels Green Mission™ Bathroom Tissue 365 Everyday Value® Bathroom Tissue 365 Everyday Value® Facial Tissue 365 Everyday Value® Dinner Napkins 365 Everyday Value® Lunch Napkins PLASTIC BAGS •100% recycled paperboard box (35% post-consumer recycled content) •Strong-sealing zipper •Kosher 365 Everyday Value® Snack Bags 365 Everyday Value® Storage Bags 365 Everyday Value® Slider Storage Bags 365 Everyday Value® Freezer Bags TRASH BAGS • 65% recycled polyethylene • 100% recycled-paperboard box (35% post-consumer recycled content) 365 Everyday Value® Drawstring Tall Kitchen Trash Bags 365 Everyday Value® Quick-Tie Tall Kitchen Trash Bags WRAPS AND PAPERS 365 Everyday Value® 100% Recycled Aluminum Foil • 100% recycled paperboard box (35% post-consumer recycled content) 365 Everyday Value® Plastic Wrap • Perfect thickness provides maximum cling • 100% recycled paperboard box (35% post-consumer recycled content) • Kosher 365 Everyday Value® Parchment Paper • Reduced waste with no metal or plastic cutter edge • 100% silicon-coated paper • Kosher 365 Everyday Value® Wax Paper • Reduced waste with no metal or plastic cutter edge So, when you can’t choose reuse, what do you look for when deciding on disposable?

Are your trash bags biodegradable? I hate throwing things away, especially since I know they are basically trapped in plastic garbage bags with no hope of breaking down. With a biodegradable bag, items could begin the slow decomposition process sooner.

@Elgi Thanks for asking. The term natural means a lot of things to a lot of different people. Hopefully this response answers your question in the most complete and satisfying fashion. Our 365 wax paper and parchment papers contain no chemicals or additives other than the silicon coating for the wax paper. Like all our products, these papers contain no preservatives. Happy shopping!

@Linda Thanks for your support! There are several reasons that a product might not be reordered at Whole Foods Market (supplier discontinue, a better product is available, etc). For the best way to get the most accurate, complete information about this product I encourage you to reach out to your community's Whole Foods Market directly. I've included the link to locate your store's contact information. They will be happy to let you know if the product is on back order or even if it can be special ordered for you. Happy waxy wrappy, Linda. ;) http://wholefoodsmarket.com/stores/

I am very unhappy with the Green Mission toilet tissue. It's all cardboard core and plastic wrapping. Almost no tissue. Waste of resources.

I totally dig the Green Mission toilet paper. my husband is pretty picky about that stuff and he even commented it is better than the crappy(pardon the pun) t.p. i have been buying over the years from charmin to angelsoft...we prefer the texture/quality of the green mission stuff. the only concern i had is that nowhere on the packaging is it listed as septic safe. we live on a farm and i watch that stuff since we are on a septic. anyone know the low down on that? i emailed the company, hoping for a quick reply.

Hello. I've been reading about PLA biodegradable plastic products made from corn starch. Is this a product you would consider stocking? Thank you.

I was hoping that 365 wax paper wasn't bleached. Could you clarify, since all the wax papers I've bought in the past were not white and this is. Thanks!

@CHERYL - I checked with our Private Label team and the paper pulp for the new wax paper is bleached using an elemetal chlorine free process to avoid the associated dioxins.
