Choosing a Better Deodorant

By Mara Fleishman, June 22, 2011  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Mara Fleishman
Interested in switching to a better deodorant but don’t know where to start? Tune in to this encore podcast presentation to educate yourself on the variety of options and hear what makes natural deodorants effective. Malia Curran, MS, MPH, is a nutrition and health consultant.

Educate yourself on deodorant options:
  • Natural deodorants do not contain aluminum chlorohydrate, which works by clogging pores and thus inhibiting sweat – a natural and necessary function of the body.
  • There is no compromise on selection. Natural deodorants are available in sprays, sticks, roll ons, and crystals, and in a variety of scents for both men and women.
Natural deodorant supports the natural function of the skin:
  • Sweat is not the source of under arm odor; bacteria is.
  • Natural ingredients like baking soda, fruit extracts, and essential oils of tea tree, lavender, aloe, and lemon grass are proven to be effective in reducing bacteria.
It is important for the body to sweat:
  • The skin performs many of its jobs through sweating: releasing toxins, controling body temperature; allowing the skin to heal and breathe.  Without sweating, the body can’t naturally rid itself of potentially harmful toxins.
  • Natural deodorants allow skin to work naturally while reducing odor.
  • Natural deodorants may need to be applied more than once throughout the day, but the health benefits are truly worth the extra effort.

I've tried a handful of natural deodorants, Tom's, Jason's and another brand, I can't find any that actually help with the BO smell. Is there a brand you can recommend that actually helps diffuse the smell? Thanks.

I am allergic to aloe; it makes me break out. Is there a natural or preferably organic deodorant carried by Whole Foods which does not have aloe? I can't find one at my local store. Thanks.

Found Bodymint in your stores and loved it. The Bodymint website says your Mill Valley, California store carries it, but your MV website doesn't list it when i hit the search button for it. Can I still get it in Marin from whole foods???Is there a reason why you dont carry it any longer? Is there an alternative that one takes internally, that works as well? Thanks a million for your help - n

Tom's of Maine lavender is real nice. It works and smells good, too.

Sweat doesn't stink... Bacteria eat the sweat and give off gas that causes the body odor. Kill the bacteria, kill the smell. Bacteria can't thrive in a salt environment. Best thing to use is a deodorant crystal which contains naturally occurring mineral salts. If you use Naturally Fresh Deodorant Crystal original "rock", it only has 1 ingredient (no aloe)... u have to wet and rub the rock on CLEAN skin. It works. Try it. Oh.. it lasts forever. Nice to save some pennies!

I've had a problem with body odour since teenage years and have tried as many natural deodorants as I could get my hands on. The only one that I found that actually works is Fresca Natural deodorant. It is made in Australia, but you can order it online. It is all I use and all my husband uses. I can recommend it highly enough. Amazing stuff. Totally natural and good for sensitive skin.

the only thing about Fresca deodorant is that it costs $30 a bottle(incl shipping). Im sorry but everyone doesnt have the money to spend on a tiny bottle of deodorant that lasts 45 days. thats the only problem.

For those of you looking for a natural deodorant solution: I have been searching for YEARS for a deodorant that works. I tried many different brands, both with anti-perspirant qualities (with aluminum) and natural. I have spent so much time unsatisfied with my end-of-the-day stink (and it's so embarrassing, especially as a woman!) that I was just about ready to give up on my quest. My cousin recommended I try her THAI CRYSTAL SPRAY. I was incredibly skeptical, so the fact that it actually works is a miracle. I let it dry while I brush my teeth, and then dab away any drips that occurred. THIS IS AMAZING. I am no longer worried about smell, and I feel so much better about myself for using something natural. Try it, you won't regret it

Hey Nick, it's not $30 a bottle for that Fresca Deodorant, only $15. It's the only one I use now. You know they won best natural aluminium free deodorant in Australia for 2012 and are also animal cruelty free?

I'm very curious to try Fresca natural, despite the price. If you order 3 from Australia, shipping is free, tho there is tax (?). Wondering if it's' possible to buy it stateside?

I have a formal dark blue dress I plan to wear for my daughter's wedding. Previously I've had two dresses this color that turned pink with the deodorant or with my sweat. I'm looking for a deodorant that won't change the color of the dress and also work. Any help appreciated.

@DEBBIE - Since our products vary between store locations, I would suggest reaching out to your local store to see what their recommendation is...a Whole Body team member will be happy to help you!

I too am on the hunt for the best natural deodorant. any stick I've tried only works if constantly reapply. I'm sorry, but i have enough junk in my purse already. i then tried " the Crystal" lavender & white tea roll on. really like it, but feel a little UN fresh late in the day. I was suggested to try Thai Crystal because it's the only Crystal deodorant where salts are the first ingredient. works awesome, but it burns my sensitive skin when I put it on. so, I just ordered fresca natural deodorant and we will see how that works.

Very important info for those who are using deodorant instead of perfume. I did not aware about that. I have tried <a href="http://www.phreshdeodorant.com/">Best Natural Deodorant Men</a> but none of them working good. I have found at last from phreshdeodorant.com. I did not get any side effect from it. You may try it. Thanks for sharing the great and valuable info with us.
