Cristina's Story - Grameen Guatemala

By Angus Cann, September 3, 2008  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Angus Cann
In June of 2006 I had the incredible opportunity to travel to Guatemala with Whole Planet Foundation Team Member, Steve Wanta. The goal of the trip was to record the personal stories of several Grameen Guatemala borrowers in the Lake Atitlán region. The video footage we shot was used to create Cristina’s Story- the video above. This video illustrates the profound change that microcredit operations can create for the people who participate in them. It was truly amazing to see how effective the Grameen method of microcredit can be, and how quickly it begins to make an impact on borrowers’ lives. You don’t need to take my word for it, though! Listen to Cristina’s story, one of the first women in the region to receive a loan from Grameen Guatemala. She’ll tell you, better than I ever could, how much microcredit has empowered her to provide for her family’s well being. Want to know more? Check out http://www.wholeplanetfoundation.org to find out how you can be a part of this truly revolutionary effort! Angus Cann is Whole Foods Market University's video production artist. He has worked at Whole Foods Market since 2005, producing video training material for Team Member Education.

For those that might like to explore a more hands on approach to microfinance, consider looking at kiva.org - a great peer-to-peer web site that allows users to loan as little as $25 USD to the entrepreneur of their choice. Fantastic organization.

Absolutely love whole-foods. I am true believer there is so many ways to better our world, by consuming sustainable products, and helping those less fortunate strive... Some of this people just need one chance, one small loan, and they will change their lives!

Cristina's story is a proof that the Whole Planet Foundation's mission is worth supporting. Through our individual contributions to such organizations we can effectively help fight poverty around the world.
