We’re so excited! Earth Day is coming up on April 22nd. Around here, we simply aren’t capable of limiting our Earth celebration to just one day. So we’ve taken it upon ourselves to call April “Earth Month” and we’ll be sharing eco-tips and activities all month long on the blog. Once a week, we’ll feature a fun kid-oriented and earth-friendly project.This week’s project helps your kids feed the local birds by using nut or seed butter from your pantry. Nut and seed butters are great for birds, and even better for you! Nut and seed butters are a great whole food source of healthy fats opens in a new tab. They’re delicious spread on other foods (think apples, bananas, whole grain crackers or bread) and can help make sauces and salad dressings more interesting.Now let’s get started! To ensure you’ve got everything you need to begin, gather your materials and then spread them out on your work area. This project can be done just about anywhere -- at the kitchen table, on a deck or patio, or in the yard. To make one bird biscuit, you will need:
1. Flat wooden shape2. Nut or seed butter3. Butter knife4. Birdseed5. Drill6. About 12” of ribbon or twine7. BowlOnce you have your materials assembled, follow these simple steps:
Step 1Drill one small hole in the top center of the wooden shape. String the ribbon through the hole and tie at the top to create an ornament. Step 2Cover the wooden shape completely in the peanut butter and then place the shape into a bowl full of birdseed. Cover the entire area of peanut butter with the birdseed, making sure no bald spots are showing.Step 3Hang it somewhere that birds can reach.Did you miss the first two projects?
