Enjoy A Celtic Christmas from Putumayo

By Dan Storper, December 3, 2011  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Dan Storper
Read on for a chance to win a 5-CD set of Putumayo’s Christmas music. Dan Storper is the CEO and Founder of Putumayo World Music. Looking for some new family Christmas music this holiday season?  We are excited to bring you our latest release, Celtic Christmas, an enchanting collection of Celtic music from Ireland, Scotland, England, Canada and United States. Celtic Christmas joins our other Christmas CDs: A Jazz & Blues Christmas, New Orleans Christmas, Christmas Around the World and World Christmas Party, which are sold at most Whole Foods Market stores. Celtic Christmas offers Celtic interpretations of Christmas classics along with an original recording. The collection begins with the joyful singing of The Albion Christmas Band on “Here We Come A-Wassalling” and moves into Charles T. Cozen’s instrumental version of “O Come, O Come Emmanuel.’” The Gothard Sisters update the classic “Little Drummer Girl” with fiddle and guitar, while DruidStones’ rendition of the French carol “Noel Nouvelet” features harp and harmonious vocals. David Huntsinger adds an original Celtic twist on the classic “Angels We Have Heard On High” while Charles T. Cozens returns with a flute-driven take on “Good King Wenceslas.” Next comes Lasairfhíona Ní Chonaola’s original Gaelic recording of “Nollaig Bhan, (White Christmas).” Steve Schuch & The Night Heron reinterpret the seasonal classic “Joy To The World” with playful sounds from the mandolin, while Áine Minogue incorporates the harp and mandolin on “Jezebel Carol.” David Arkenstone’s “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” features flute and strings, and Dougie MacLean closes out the collection with a soulful Scottish rendition of “Auld Lang Syne.” Do you have a favorite recording of a Christmas song? Let us know what it is in the comments below by December 13th for a chance to win a collection of five Putumayo Christmas CDs, including our latest, Celtic Christmas. I was thrilled to learn about more than 20 exceptional singer-songwriters that I hadn’t heard of before in your comments on our post about Acoustic Café.  I’m hoping your comments here about your favorite recordings of Christmas songs will help us put together future Christmas compilations. We’re also excited to offer a $1.00 off coupon for any Putumayo CD in The Whole Deal value guide in Whole Foods Market stores and printable online here. Remember to use the coupon if you pick up one of our CDs at your local store — I hear they make great holiday gifts! Wishing you all a happy, healthy and peaceful holiday season.

My son and his family are Christian; I am not. My personal favorite song for this time of year is: Yule (Winter Solstice) by Lisa Thiel http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8C4mfpIM7qM&feature=player_detailpage Music by Lisa Thiel LYRICS: Chorus: Enter the night and you'll find the light, That will carry you to your dreams. Enter the night, let your spirit take flight, In the field of infinite possibilities On the longest night we search for the light, And we find it deep within. Open your eyes to embrace what is wise, And see the light of your own soul shining. (Chorus) Wrap up in the cloak of starry darkness my child, And you'll find the center of all things. For from this space of the deepest dark place, Life Eternal does spring. (Chorus) So when you find that spark When you dream in the dark, Hold it close to your heart and know. All that you see is all that can be When you give birth to the dreams of your soul. (Chorus)

I grew up listening to all the different Putumayo recordings and have since kept that love alive! It's incredible how people from all around the world can be brought together through the the power of music :) For christmas music, I usually turn to Josh Groban's "Noel" for a warm fuzzy feeling! Happy Holidays to everyone!

I do not have a favorite recording of Christmas music, there are so many that are so wonderful. I am fairly new to the Celtic music and love it! Having almost No Christmas CD's, this would be an awesome addition to our holidays to bring my husbands heritage into our home.

One of our daughters is an Irish dancer (to our knowledge, our Hispanic roots didn't have any offshoots from Ireland), so we're discovering an appreciation for anything Celtic, this CD would be a welcome addition to our music library. As for my favorite holiday song ... I love any of the holiday music by the Trans Siberian Orchestra - particularly Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24.

I have to say my fav Christmas song of all time is "The Christmas Waltz". It is not often recorded, but the ones I have found are always spellbinding. I look forward to getting to know more of Putumayo's music - holiday music is my all time favorite type of music! The video of "Om Numah Shivaya" on YouTube is spellbinding!
