A Few New Fall Faves

By Allison Burch, October 8, 2010  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Allison Burch
There’s something about the change of seasons and the cooler-but-not-yet-cold days of Fall that makes me feel energized and ready for something new. I’m back into a consistent exercise routine (you know, the one that went on vacation during the summer), I start doing more home cooking, baking and trying new recipes, and I start refocusing on my overall health and well-being, perhaps in anticipation of a little splurging during the holidays. That’s why I’m excited about some of the newest products on our shelves. They look like they’ll fit right in with my Fall feel-good goals. Read on for a chance to win some new goodies. You’ll only find the awesome new Emergen-C Planet Dragon Fruit flavor in Whole Foods Market stores. But what’s even more awesome is that for every box sold, $0.10 is donated to the Whole Planet Foundation to help fund microlending projects in impoverished communities in developing countries! If you’re not familiar with Emergen-C, you should be. It’s a refreshing, non-carbonated, naturally energizing fizzy drink that contains 1,000 MG Vitamin C, 7 B Vitamins & Key Electrolytes. We drink it daily in our household. Another new product, currently exclusive to Whole Foods Market, is Lifeway BioKefir shots. They’re specifically designed to support immunity, heart health and digestion. Each 3.5-oz shot has more than 20 billion units of live and active probiotic activity – twice the amount in other regular Kefir and similar yogurt varieties! They’re sold in four-packs, available in five flavors and are just 60 calories each. These would be so convenient to take along on my morning commute! Then there’s the new Simply Organic Gluten Free Baking Mixes, out just in time for the start of the Fall and upcoming holiday baking seasons. These mixes are a perfect addition to a gluten free, organic diet that doesn’t compromise taste or quality. Plus, they are also vegetarian and certified kosher, and are free of hydrolyzed vegetable protein, modified food starch, hydrogenated oils, and genetically engineered ingredients. And check out the stellar line-up: Pancake & Waffle, Banana Bread, Carrot Cake, Chai Spice Scone, Cocoa Biscotti, Cocoa Brownie, and Cocoa Cayenne Cupcake. In fact, I think I see an organic, gluten-free scone in my future this weekend! Yep, I admit I have quite a sweet tooth. I’m pretty conscious about what I eat and definitely aim for moderation, but even that little sprinkling of sweetness in my morning cup of coffee can really add up when I’m doing it every day! That’s why I’m super excited about SweetLeaf Stevia sweeteners. It’s the only chemical-free, zero-calorie, zero-carb, zero-glycemic index, 100% natural sweetener available and is the ideal sweet solution for people with diabetes, weight watchers and everyone else too. It’s made by taking the highest quality leaves of the stevia plant and extracting their naturally sweet taste with only cool, purified water. Use it to add sweetness to all of your favorite foods and beverages. What new products have you tried lately? Tell us about them in the comments below by Oct. 22nd. One lucky reader will be selected at random to win a Lifeway cooler filled with a four-pack of each of the five BioKefir flavors and a case of assorted SweetLeaf Stevia products.

I tried the Lifeway Biokefir Pomegranate/Blueberry for immunity and thought it had a nice tangy-sweet flavor. I always get sick around this time of year and like that these will help me boost my immune system.

My new fav are the WF shrimp burgers, uh-AMAZING!!! BUT!! I am 25, just married!, a nightshift ICU nurse, grad student, and mom of two beautiful beagles, little time for nutrition. I am looking forward to try the new Emergen-C! What an enticing flavor! I will definitely be incorporating this into my day to defend all of those pediatric germs and flu season. Also, I drink A LOT of coffee, who doesn't?!, and I am very excited that WF will be carrying a completely organic sweetener that wont plunge my glucose level. It is hard to eat healthy and find healthy recipes with my schedule, thats why I love the WF blog. I am so excited for fall recipes! Thanks so much!

I just recently had the Think Thin gluten free protein bar - the peanut butter one. I must say that I am pleasantly surprised how good it was. And the fact that it was easy to chew (unlike some protein bars) ...that sold me! And I love the price of it! I'll be buying a box next time.

Recently I've tried products by Amy's and tofu (Whole Foods 365 brand). I'm now hooked on Amy's burritos and love tofu in everything! Both products/brands make a vegetarian like myself very happy.

I know you can use Stevia cup for cup in recipes to replace sugar but be forwarned that the stevia in the bag to use for baking has a filler in it and so it is not pure Stevia. Pure Stevia is so concentrated that you only need a tiny bit to replace the taste of sugar. The filler is called Maltodextrin. I don't think its harmful but its just not pure Stevia in the bag you want to use for baking.

I recently tried the WF Unsweetened ALmond Milk---we are big fans of almond milk in our house for everything from cereal to smoothies to soups! We all liked the milk better than the brand me usually buy...even my 2 sons like it and have commented on the taste! They typically prefer rice milk because it is sweeter, so I am happy they like this unsweetened version! We also purchased 3 WF made fresh pizzas for my 7 year old's birthday party! They were delicious....even got my New York husband's approval (new yorker's know their pizza!) I felt good knowing that there was not HFCS and other questionable ingredients in the pizza I served at the party!

I recently tried the WF lemon hummus - it tastes just like the hummus from a Lebanese place that I love! And like Courtney, I also tried the WF brand of unsweetened almond milk. It's the same price as my usual brand and tastes slightly more almond-y.

my husband was diagnosed with celiac disease 12 years ago, before there was wide-spread awareness of the condition, and certainly before the convenience of baking mixes and other gluten free convenience foods! While we have become pretty good gluten free bakers over time, it is such a relief to have suchh outstanding products as the Simply Organic gluten free mixes! These mixes are great and are a departure from the standard brownies, bread, and pancake mixes that are typically available. And organic too! What's not to love!

I've tried to find info on the stevia sweeteners' ingredients. I know most of them contain dextrose or sucrose or "natural flavors" or processed ingredients. Does Whole Foods have a completely natural stevia without all the junk in it? Thank you.

@FLOWERCHILD - Our 365 line of Stevia will not contain any additional sweeteners or natural flavors. Some options might contain maltodextrin as a dilutant.
