Gluten Free Bakehouse

By Kate Medley, March 21, 2010  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Kate Medley
Take a look behind the scenes at Whole Foods Market’s Gluten Free Bakehouse.  In 1996, Lee Tobin was diagnosed with celiac disease, and, as a baker in our Chapel Hill, North Carolina, store, this presented a real challenge.  But Lee took it on! He began experimenting with gluten free baking on his own time, developing recipes that rivaled conventional goods in flavor and texture.  Over the years, Lee’s gluten free breads and baked goods flew off the shelves faster and faster.  By October 2004, he was proud to fire up the gluten free ovens in the new, completely separate, dedicated facility: the Whole Foods Market Gluten Free Bakehouse.

Since being diagnosed with celiac disease I have tried a lot of different kinds of GF bread. Whole Foods so far has the best flavor of any that I tried.

Do you have a list of things you carry that I could order and get shipped to my house? I live in Alliance and don't have a Whole Foods Store near us.

@DALE - We offer shipping on certain items through our Concierge desk at our downtown Austin location. You can reach them at 512.542.2243 and they can go over their shipping guidelines. They should also be able to provide you with a list of what they offer at the Lamar location.

@MELISSA - Thanks for your question. I am guessing by your comment that you are looking specifically for gluten free and vegan options in the D.C. area? If so, you will need to reach out to the store you will be visiting as or products vary between regions and store locations. You can find their contact information at http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/stores/list. Have fun!

I love your gluten-free pecan pie. However, most of the time, the Whole Food store in Richmond VA does not carry it. Can I order it directly from the bakery?

@NATALIE - Unfortunately, our Bakehouses are not set up as retail facilities. It might be that the pecan pie is more of a holiday/seasonal product. If you haven't already, I would suggest reaching out to the Bakery Team Leader at your local store to see the availability of when the pie is available for order and to express your interest in the product. I'm sure they will be happy to work with you to order the product if possible!

Hi there! This is so exciting! I LOVE Wholefoods and live in the DC area now. I usually go to the Clarendon store but I don't believe they have GF Bakery goods there...do they?! Would be so convenient to get more GF baked goods at this location!!!

To whom it may concern, I was looking to purchase your Gluten-Free Pizza Crusts and haven't seen them at Whole Foods in a while and wanted to know if you still make them. If not, will you re- continue??

@FRANK - I was able to check with our Private Label team and have no fear, they are out of stock right now but we have no plans to discontinue them. Keep an eye out over the next month for them to be back in your store!
