GreenShield Organic

By Carly Price, April 13, 2012  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Carly Price

We love our producers, suppliers and vendors and we think most of them have some pretty interesting stories behind their products too. We’re sharing some of our favorites here in an ongoing series.

GreenShield Organic was created by a dad on a mission to uncover hidden ingredients in household cleaners.

As a father of three, Adam McCarthy became so frustrated with a lack of ingredient disclosure on cleaning products, he decided to make his own.

"We list every ingredient on every package and state its actual name,” Adam explains. "We empower customers to decide which ingredients they want to use in their homes.”

GreenShield was the first brand of laundry, dish and hard surface cleaners to receive an organic certification from the USDA.

All of their ingredients are carefully sourced with the safety of people, pets and the planet in mind.

Just as important as what’s in GreenShield’s products is what’s not in them: phthalates, parabens, petroleum-based ingredients, sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate and ammonia.

The company is committed to environmentally conscious packaging, too. "We have chosen to reduce the fuel and energy output by sourcing packaging materials as close to home as possible.”

Most GreenShield bottles are manufactured within a 1.5-hour drive from the bottling facility, and the labels are produced at a facility about 15 minutes away.

All GreenShield bottles are recyclable, or instead you might want to consider rinsing and refilling spray bottles to mist houseplants, or cutting the top off laundry bottles for crafty reuse projects, such as a watering can or pet food scoop. Let kids decorate the outside with stickers or paint for extra fun.

What are your favorite container reuse ideas? Share them with us in the comment section! Photography by Ha Lam.

I'm so glad to read about GreenShield and the care that goes into its production, bottling, etc. I'll definitely try it, both to support a company with such integrity and to use a product I don't have to be concerned about...looking forward to it. If you can, please pass on my best wishes to Adam. Wish there were more people like him, following through!

I am glad to learn about this product and will try it ASAP. I currently use what I think is an environmentally friendly product, but who knows really? I appreciate that Adam McCarthy investigated a lot of products very thoroughly and then decided he could do better. Kudos to him; may it be of benefit to all and a great success to him and his family.

Looking forward to trying these products. I make my own cleaning products but I'm always willing to try it and see if it's a superior product.

Do happy to have these types of cleaners available at reasonable costs...however, as much as I have tried, I cannot use the toilet bowl cleaner as it is ineffective in keeping our bowls clean!! It is very thin and does not seem to sufficiently keep the surface clean. Any suggestions??

I love GreenShield Organic! The detergents are fabulous and the surface/glass cleaners work great!! Adam is really on to something here! @Renee Marshall - do you have their newest Toilet Bowl bottle? I called and was told that the formula had changed and the performance improved dramatically; also it now has a nice pine scent, you should try again! Thank you GreenShield Organic!

Has anyone had a good experience with the automatic dishwasher liquid detergent? I was so excited to try it and then was so disappointed in the results. Even after a pre-rinse, all my dishes were dirty. Some of the dishes were even dirtier than when I put them in the dishwasher. I tried several wash cycles, but nothing seemed to work. I love their mission and the care that goes into their labeling, packaging, etc., but I think their formula still needs some work.

This company is great, just like Whole Foods. I only use Green Shield products for cleaning now, thank you Adam McCarthy! Natalie I had a similar issue, although my dishes weren't dirty, they just had rinse water spots. I emailed them and was told that hard water has a lot to do with the performance of this particular item. They suggested a "rinse aid" to avoid this issue and it worked great! Try it out, my dishes are clean and sparkling :) !! Thanks Whole Foods and GreenShield Organic! Sandy

O my gosh!! This product is amazing. I am so proud of you Adam. It is people like you that change the world. I use the toilet bowl cleaner all the time. I have two youngsters at home and they make a mess in the bathroom. Wow that is all I can say. Fantastic job.

Love the laundry liquid and dishwasher soap. I use vinegar as a rinse aid in the dishwasher in addition as well as some in the washing machine. The last time I used the dishwasher soap, when I opened the bottle, there was a sour smell to it that I never noticed before. Is it possible that it's gone bad somehow? I love that it's certified organic and all the ingredients are listed. I was getting desperate trying to find a "safe" laundry soap for my chemical allergies.

Hello, I have been researching organic cleaning products for some time and have become quite familiar. I know that no preservatives can be used in organic products because there is not an organic preservative on the market - I double checked before writing this! ^Debbie, you probably have an old bottle, do you see an experation date? I am sure you could call Green Shield and they would replace it if it is old product. The vinegar rinse aid is something I am going to try, thanks for sharing!!!

This is a terrible product! I'm having to run my dishwasher two or three times and things still aren't clean. Kind of defeats the purpose of buying an "earth friendly" product if you have to waste that much water and energy. Sorry, Whole Foods, but I'm going over to Giant now to buy the phosphate free dishwasher detergent that actually cleans my dishes.

i have made a habit of putting tick marks on my laundry detergent bottles to see how many loads i actually get out of laundry bottles. i purchased GreenShield Organic Lavender Laundry Detergent, and noted that the bottle states it will get 60 loads at HE levels, and 40 loads at standards levels. By my count, I was able to get 33 loads from the 60 oz bottle. Since the amount marks are always almost impossible to see, i feel that claiming high numbers of loads is not an honest practice. While i appreciate the organic effort, and you posting the actual ingredients, i would appreciate better ease in measuring detergent amounts and more honesty in claims. thanks.

Your products are rated great by the Environmental Working Group - some even better than Seventh Generation, my brand of choice for decades. I live in central Iowa (40 miles north of Des Moines, 5 miles north of Ames). Where can I buy your products? Thanks.

@LINDA - Our products vary between store locations so I would suggest calling the store closest to you or searching on the Green Shield website to see if they offer their products in your area. You can search by locations at http://greenologyproducts.com/locator/default.aspx. Good luck!

Thanks for producing an organic product! I plan on looking for it the next time I go to Whole Foods. My former laundry detergent by Biokleen now uses Sodium Lauryl Sulfate which means I'm desperate for an alternative. I'm allergic to that particular chemical. It's fantastic to know that there are individuals who are doing this to manufacture a product that is safe for us and the environment. I'm highly disappointed in many of the others who have gotten 'cheap' and have suddenly changed their formulas after getting a client base. I for one will go to a company who produces a real 'organic' product - not someone whose label is out there and well known (especially when the chemicals are now as horrible and typical detergents you'd find in a normal store). Again, thanks...I look forward to trying out your product. :)

Unfortunately, the dishwasher detergent does not work. The dishes do not get clean or sanitized. Will not purchase again. Search and read other reviews online. They all say the same thing.

I'm just now finding these products, but Whole Foods in my state only carries a few items. I had been using Seventh Generation cleaning products, believing that they were safe, but recently found the Guide to Healthy Cleaning on the EWG website, and discovered most of them are not safe. All of the Green Shield products received an "A" or "B," mostly "A's" though. I would definitely check out EWG before you purchase your next cleaning product (or cosmetic item). I discovered lots of surprises with regard to products I believed were safe (partly because of their claims, partly because they are carried by natural food stores like Whole Foods). And, without a way to check prior to finding EWG's guide, I guess I just hoped they were being honest.

I cannot find any GreenShield Organics products at the Whole Foods Market store, my local store is in Boca Raton, FL. Only the toilet cleaner was on the shelf. I asked the sales clerk, they never heard of them. I filled out forms for special order, 5 days now no one got back to me. I particularly want Greenshield Organics since it has highest ratings in the EWG web site. I am looking for: Green Shield Organic Laundry Detergent, HE Elite Care; Green Shield Organic Bathroom Cleaner, Fresh; Green Shield Organic All-Purpose Cleaner Degreaser, Fresh; Green Shield Organic Squeez Automatic Dishwasher Liquid Detergent, Lemongrass. Why is Whole Foods offering C and D safety-rated products when there are such great alternatives like GreenShield?

@TAMARA - We are decentralized as a company so we do not carry the same products at all of our stores. If your local store does not have the option to order more of the products for you, we do offer non-perishable shipping from our store in Austin. Give them a call to see if they carry what you're looking for and they'll be happy to help out. You can reach them at 512-542-2243!
