Help Us Celebrate $4 Million and Counting!

THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR COMMENTS. CONGRATULATIONS TO TARA FROM ANN ANBOR, MICHIGAN! SHE'S THE WINNER OF THE LOCAL PRODUCT GIFT BASKET! Good news – as of this week, Whole Foods Market has funded $4 million in low-interest loans for small, local producers through our Local Producer Loan Program! Even better news – that money has helped our neighborhood farmers, bakers, artisans, mom-and-pop shops (you name it) grow their businesses and bring hundreds of high quality products into our stores for our customers to enjoy. The best news – to celebrate the milestone, we're giving away a basket full of goodies made by some of our loan recipients!  It's simple. Just enter a comment below by March 22nd telling us why you love your local producers and you have a chance to win! We’ll choose one lucky comment at random to receive the basket. Why did we start the Local Producer Loan Program? Whole Foods Market recognizes that small businesses (even with high quality products and a viable business plan) sometimes need a hand to reach their big dreams. So in 2007, we launched the Local Producer Loan Program with a commitment to fund up to $10 million dollars in low-interest loans. After all, it's our hard-working local producers and their unique offerings that give each of our stores its one-of-a-kind flavor and pizzazz. Check out what's in this bountiful basket. And remember, since these products are made by local stars from all across the country, you may not be able to find them at your local store. All the more reason to post your comment by March 22nd for a chance to give these great local favorites a try.

I first go to my garden and than the farmers market. What I can not get there I find at Whole Foods! Being a localvor is so important not only for nutrition and the environment, but food in season has the very best flavor! I also try and eat mostly from items without a bar code! I shop the outside of the market when ever possible! Support small local organic farmers! They are the backbone of any community!

I love eating something that I know was produced by people in my own state or region. Especially if it's a cheese, I really enjoy the cheeses that come from our state! If it's produce, it actually gives me hope that my gardening skills might be able to produce something similar in the future.

I love my local producers because their work guarantees me the best quality products - those that haven't been pumped full of pesticides to survive the very long distances they travel.

Food preparation done on small scale, with details focused on those of us that have special food needs (and hell cravings) has my endless appreciation. There is nothing like biting into a meal, or simply a cookie, with the knowledge that it was thoughtfully made. Businesses that cater to these small scale producers care about what goes on their shelf, and likewise care about those who shop in their store. I will forever support the personal touches, and those that influence them :-)

I am happy to help local farmers and producers stay in business, and want to feed my family and friends only the freshest ingredients. I especially enjoy local fruits, vegetables and cheeses.

Our local producers put more care into their products and really bend over backwards to cater to their customers. I also enjoy the fact that their items are unique and different than everyone else.

I love buying products from local farms and companies, because I like to know exactly where my food comes from and believe in supporting the individuals who grow or prepare it. Local products are fresh and seasonal, which is important for me and my family.

Local producers save gas!!

I always keep it local. When it comes to my family's food it becomes even more important. Eating locally produced foods keep the carbon footprint down, keep the money in our community by supporting a local grower/producer and the best part is that I know many of them and I know how hard they work and supporting them makes me feel great. I also can see where and how they grow the food we eat. It's really a win-win for all of us.

Our local producers in and around Austin are incredible!! I have had some of the best mustard greens, eggs, and turnips from my dearest friend and local producer. The goods that are sold at Whole Foods, farmers markets, and small groceries around town cannot be beat anywhere else in the country...Mark my words. Thanks Whole Foods!

I like my local producers because their my neighbors. The Easton farm stand, started last year, has been not only a convenient place to buy fresh local produce and honey, but also a pleasant place to stop.

We live in "the country" out in Delano, MN. We frequent a couple local farmers and the farmers market. It's so great to know that some farmers may it possible for us to share in their bounty. It's great that the food doesn't travel so far and our daughter learns about farming and is able to form relationships with people who live and work near by.

I love organic produce because it is a much healthier and sustainable way to enjoy food. It is healthier for me, and local organic food tastes better than processed food packed with preservatives and ingredients you can't even pronounce. On top of all this, buying and enjoying local food directly supports local farmers and communities.

Local food is just fresher, so it tastes so much better. Fruit is sweeter and juicier, veggies are never bland or rubbery. I like local food because it's putting my money back into my community, and what I get in return is just so much better than anything trucked in from 1000s of miles away. Yum!

Chef Allie Kent says …

As a culinary trained raw vegan chef, who also lived above the original Whole Foods in its beginning days while attending UT, I'm thrilled to see Whole Food Market supporting more local producers as these producers bring the freshest ingredients available to benefit people's most vibrant life! Local is also more sustainable for the planet, and this is awesome for all of us.

I did not realize your produce is locally grown. That must be why it is always so fresh. I use Kale, cabbage, carrots and various kinds of fruits to make my blended juice everyday. It has been a great way to lose weight and have a lot of energy. Love your grain free Almond cookies, too! Barb
