Help Us Celebrate $4 Million and Counting!

THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR COMMENTS. CONGRATULATIONS TO TARA FROM ANN ANBOR, MICHIGAN! SHE'S THE WINNER OF THE LOCAL PRODUCT GIFT BASKET! Good news – as of this week, Whole Foods Market has funded $4 million in low-interest loans for small, local producers through our Local Producer Loan Program! Even better news – that money has helped our neighborhood farmers, bakers, artisans, mom-and-pop shops (you name it) grow their businesses and bring hundreds of high quality products into our stores for our customers to enjoy. The best news – to celebrate the milestone, we're giving away a basket full of goodies made by some of our loan recipients!  It's simple. Just enter a comment below by March 22nd telling us why you love your local producers and you have a chance to win! We’ll choose one lucky comment at random to receive the basket. Why did we start the Local Producer Loan Program? Whole Foods Market recognizes that small businesses (even with high quality products and a viable business plan) sometimes need a hand to reach their big dreams. So in 2007, we launched the Local Producer Loan Program with a commitment to fund up to $10 million dollars in low-interest loans. After all, it's our hard-working local producers and their unique offerings that give each of our stores its one-of-a-kind flavor and pizzazz. Check out what's in this bountiful basket. And remember, since these products are made by local stars from all across the country, you may not be able to find them at your local store. All the more reason to post your comment by March 22nd for a chance to give these great local favorites a try.

I love my local producers because they the Masters that are on the front line of sustaining this community, and they are each of us: Mothers, Fathers, Community Citizens concerned with the stretching of their individual dollar. Within this self-sustaining system, they are also providing us with a way to insure that our children will grow up to become nutritionally healthy adults who can contribute to the new demands of our ever-growing communal economic ecosystem. I love buying local! Thank you for your dedication and your Missions to heal us all! We Love you, Keep up the Good, Wholesome Work!

I needed only one taste of our locally grown "heirloom" tomatoes to be convinced that we are extremely lucky to have such talented food producers available to us as we have. And the Whole Foods market makes their products available to us through their generous programs to support these producers. The support in this community is truly outstanding and that really helps us keep good wholesome locally grown and produced products on our plates year round. An awesome effort that we should all appreciate and applaud for the way it is managed and administered. Keep up the excellent work. I'm impressed every trip i make to the Whole Foods market with the good fortune we are blessed with.

I love my local producers because they are often available for questions and explanations, and you can usually meet them at the farmer's market, standing behind the very products they made!

Crystal says …

I love knowing where my food is coming from and who's responsible for making it- I like how buying local tends to be more interpersonal than buying from a corporation, and it leaves me feeling good knowing I could be helping someone's business out.

I love that Whole Foods has the Local Producer program because it gives me the opportunity to learn about the existence of these mom and pop businesses and have the opportunity to potentially establish a one on one rapport with them for those instances that you need something outside the typical standard -ie 3 eggs rather than 6 for that special cake because the other three would go to waste.

Andrea says …

Wow! Great contest! Well, I regularly shop locally. Taking every opportunity I get to shop at local green markets. Its not always feasible for me to buy organic, because I live on a budget. But, I try to budget it in every week. I love getting wild fresh produce, fish and poultry, greens and that's why I love local producers. I know its traced back to a local source. I can trust that when I purchase produce from Whole foods I'm getting a quality product. That makes me feel like I'm getting the best of the best! Who doesn't want that? I've also noticed how much healthier I feel when I enjoy my greens from local growers.

Zak Bauman says …

Local is important on many levels. It is better for the environment because the food doesn't have to travel far, plus what comes from the community stays in the community. Local food means it's fresh and will taste fabulous.

RainyGoat (Pam) says …

Local means you get the freshest foods at its nutritional peak while helping your community's economy. Don't forget to grow some of your own veg and/or fruits as well!

J. Keng says …

Because they help the environment!

Toni Culpepper says …

The local producers employ people in my area. That helps the local economy. The fruit and veggies (if there were some in the basket) have a better chance of being ripe and not green when picked, giving my family the nutrients they need and want from the foods they eat. It is also better for the enviroment, as there is less travel, less gas used, less pollution put into the air. The ranchers, farmers and other people involves in products produced closer to home, have a vested interest in the community. As do I, I have my own business and we serve the major community, if our clients are doing well, it helps everyone.

Mary Poulos says …

simple...tastes better as well as supports local economy.

I love using local products because chances are I have met the person who picked or packaged the product at a vendor stand or farmers market.

Since 2008, we've been trying to buy exclusively local goods, and while sometimes difficult to find, it's a pleasure to help give back to the economy and the local agriculture. The local farms around here produce some of the best meat and dairy products I've ever had the pleasure of tasting and hopefully they'll continue to offer such goodies to us as live nearby!

I love to go by a local producers farm and then see the products in my local Whole Foods market. It's a great thing to support local business.

Mary Rodriguez says …

I love buying locally grown produce and products because they are tastier, fresher and usually less expensive as they do not great travel distances. Visiting the local farm stands and farmers is not only an inexpensive fun family day, it is often quite educational. I have learned many things directly from the producers, improved my health and collected many yummy recipes all the way. It is also an excellent way to give back to my community and support the hard work that is done each and everyday

Melissa says …

Julie Glass says …

Our local producers are important because they not only supply our community with jobs, goods and taxpayers money. What they give to their community, we as part of the community will benefit in many ways. It makes me proud to be part of an area and especially proud when producers can supply us with local products.

Irene says …

It's important to support our local producers because they supply us with fresh local produce and don't receive the subsidies or grants that large farms and companies receive.
