Homemade Mulled Wine

Ingredients:

  • 6 cinnamon sticks, crushed

  • 2 tablespoons cardamom pods, crushed

  • 3 tablespoons dried lemon peel

  • 3 tablespoons dried orange peel

  • 3 tablespoons whole cloves

  • 3 tablespoons chopped crystallized ginger

  • 2 tablespoons whole allspice

  • 1 tablespoon black peppercorns (optional)

  • Cheesecloth or cooking sachets

  • 1 bottle dry red wine

  • Sugar, to taste (1/3 – 2/3 cup suggested)

Method:

  1. Combine all of the spices and divide into six sachets (or squares of cheesecloth, which you would then tie up with string.

  2. Simmer the red wine with one spice sachet and sugar in a saucepan for about 20 minutes. Do not allow to boil!

  3. Use remaining five spice sachets for gifts (remember to include heating instructions) or store in an airtight container for future batches of mulled wine or mulled apple cider.
