Looking for Kosher Poultry?

By Paige Brady, September 13, 2009  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Paige Brady
Kosher Valley We got it! That's right, just in time for the Jewish High Holy Days, we now offer a new line of certified kosher chicken and turkey, available in most of our U.S. stores. (We say "most" because our meat buyer says that some of our smaller stores don't have room to carry much and others may sell out, so we want to be cautious and not over-promise. You can always call your local store to check availability.) These new products are provided by Kosher Valley™, a new certified kosher brand from Hain Celestial Group (Hain Pure Protein), and are certified by Rabbi Yechiel Babad and the Orthodox Union. Kosher Valley's antibiotic-free kosher line is one of the first of its kind in the United States. According to Kosher Valley, many steps in kosher poultry processing are still performed by hand. Specially trained rabbinical inspectors check each bird ensuring that it is of the highest quality and processed in accordance with the kosher standards of cleanliness, purity and wholesomeness. All Kosher Valley poultry is hand-salted, inside and out, to remove blood since meat with blood in it is considered non-kosher. After salting, each bird is soaked three times in icy water to thoroughly cleanse the bird and remove the salt. Like all poultry sold at our stores, the new Kosher Valley products must also meet our strict standards requiring that the birds are raised on a vegetarian diet with no antibiotics. Looks for kosher poultry in our stores now, including fresh and frozen whole young turkeys, ground turkey, fresh and frozen chicken, and tray packs of both turkey and chicken.

"The Jewish High holidays" you say? Are there other kinds?

@JUDITH - Thanks for your comment. Due to the prevalence of the GMOs in the commodity grain market, and the limited availability of verified non-GMO feed, we cannot require the use of only non- GMO feed for animal products (including meat, dairy and farmed fish) sold in our stores. We encourage shoppers who are looking to avoid products from animals fed GMOs to choose organic meat and dairy products (since organic standards prohibit the intentional use of GMOs), farmed molluscs such as clams, oysters, and mussels (since no added feed is used when farming these species), or wild-caught seafood.

Oye, whole Foods sold me a super doper Kosher turkey for $65. Unfortunately for about an hour we are plucking feathers! How about warning us about this at the store! Next year it's back to Earth Fare for sure

@DOUG - Sorry to hear about this. Were you able to let the store know about your difficulties? If not, let me know which location you purchased the turkey and I can pass along your feedback.

I found this blog through a google search on Kosher Valley. Since this post, it is now owned by Empire Chicken. I am able to purchase it at the Whole Foods on P Street NW in Washington, DC. Just started buying it, January 2013. Although the company is owned by Empire, the chickens taste better than the standard Empire brand.

I purchased a kosher valley turkey in December and I would pick up a kosher chicken everytime I was in the store. However, the last few times I've been shopping, there have been no kosher valley products available. Could you please advise if you are still carrying these kosher products? I shop at the montrose store. thank you.

@CATHERINE - I was able to speak with a meat buyer at Montrose and he let me know that Kosher Valley turkeys and chickens are only available to order during the holidays. They do carry the Kosher Valley chicken breast cutlets in the frozen area year-round!

Kosher Valley was bought by Empire Chickens in May 2010. The Kosher Valley plant was closed. So Kosher Valley Chickens is just another brand name for...Empire Chickens. As it all comes from the same plant, it's just a different wrapper.

Why are there not more Kosher Valley chickens in your Cambridge RIver St store these days? Is it possible to have them delivered on Fridays - rather than Saturdays, so they are fresh for Friday night dinner. We love these chickens and recently they have not been in the store. Help!!

@NANCY - Were you able to ask this question to the Meat dept. at the Cambridge location? They are in charge of their ordering so they will let you know if these chickens are more of a seasonal option or something they might be able to special order for you if they are not generally stocked on their shelves. You can reach the store directly at 617.876.6990.

I'd like to encourage you guys to switch to Wise organic kosher meats. They are both free range and organic and better reflect the values of whole foods and the interest of your customers. Kosher Valley is really not that different from conventional poultry.

I bought the Kosher Valley wings you guys had in place of the other brand, Rancher I believe. This was at the Oakland, CA wholefoods. I'm sorry to say it was awful. The skin was extremely greasy and fatty. It also tasted weird even with a lot seasoning, not to mention i had to pluck a lot of the feathers off it myself. Also, there were sharp bones from some of the wings. I ended throwing most of it out which is unfortunate.
