Love Bacon? Win a Year of It!

By Value Guru, July 17, 2012  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Value Guru

Is your motto, “Everything’s better with bacon”? Are you on the lookout for an incredible deal on enough bacon to make the mouth-watering sandwiches, salads, burgers and breakfasts you crave? Read on to find out how to enter to win a Year of Bacon! In the current issue of The Whole Deal value guide, we share $49+ in coupons, Sure Deals, 10 budget-friendly recipes and money-saving tips and we also get to the meat of the matter – bacon. It’s sizzling hot these days. So what makes ours better? Made with high-quality pork raised and processed to our strict Quality Standards for Meat, it’s the wonderful, flavorful bacon you want without having to break your piggy bank. Compare to see what you really get for your money.

Let’s start by checking out the ingredients:

365 Everyday Value® Uncured Center Cut Smokehouse Bacon ingredients: Pork, Water, Sea Salt, Evaporated Cane Sugar

Major national brand uncured bacon ingredients: Pork, Water, Sea Salt, Evaporated Cane Syrup, Cultured Celery Juice

Now let’s take a closer look because there’s more to bacon than meets the eye (or the frying pan). Our bacon has standards beyond flavor and sizzlability.

No antibiotics and no added hormones What about how the animals were raised for the bacon you are buying? We believe in great-tasting meat from healthy animals. While federal regulations prohibit the use of hormones in raising pork, our standards don’t allow them in any meat production and they also say “no antibiotics, ever.”

No animal byproducts When animals are fed animal byproducts in their feed, their health can be put in jeopardy. When an animal is unhealthy, the meat from it can be affected, so our standards prohibit animal byproducts in the animal's feed. There’s no similar claim by that major national brand.

No gestation or farrowing crates Animal welfare scientists have proven that sows in crates and stalls, commonly used on many pig farms, show abnormal repetitive behaviors, can go into a state of learned helplessness and are prone to leg problems due to inactivity. Not surprisingly, pigs are in hog heaven in an environment that promotes natural behaviors like moving around and stretching their legs. There’s no need to rattle any cages around here; we prohibit the use of crates and cages by all of our pork suppliers.

Bedding required in housing Rather than spending their lives on barren, slatted flooring as is customary practice, all our pork suppliers are required to provide their pigs with good quality bedding, which helps keep them warm and comfortable. While our producers’ pigs rest easy, are the pigs behind the other brand’s bacon losing sleep? When you put quality standards at the center of the plate, 365 Everyday Value® Uncured Center Cut Smokehouse Bacon smokes the competition. If you’re asking what’s the deal about uncured bacon: Under federal labeling laws, processed meat products such as bacon, hot dogs and lunchmeats that don't utilize synthetic nitrates or nitrites must be marked “Uncured–No Nitrates or Nitrites added.” Instead, uncured bacon often contains naturally occurring nitrates from sea salt and vegetable powders or juices. Our standards prohibit synthetic nitrates and nitrites in all products throughout our stores.

Win A Year of Bacon! To celebrate our sizzling hot bacon, we’re holding an online contest on Facebook to find the next big bacon idea. Bacon chocolates, cocktails and salt have been hits. What’s next? Share your idea and be entered to win a Year of Bacon. (Yes, a Year of Bacon!) Enter and vote for your favorites in the Bacon Smackdown going on between now and July 31 at facebook.com/wholefoodsmeat. The grand prize winner chosen by Whole Foods Market receives a Year of Bacon, and the top 10 ideas as “liked” by the Facebook community receive $50 Whole Foods Market gift cards. Winners will be announced August 10, 2012. We expect the competition to be smokin’ hot, so good luck to all! Make sure you enter the contest on the Whole Foods Market Meat Facebook page, not in the comments below. But if you want to tell us why you’re hot for bacon, we’d love to hear about it.

Prior coming to Whole Foods, I thought that i've had bacon. I was completely wrong. The thick cut slabs of bacon are more substantive than the regular bacon found on the supermarket shelves. And that pigs that the bacon came from have to hormones or antibiotics makes the bacon all the more better. The best thing to do with bacon in my mind is BLT. There is nothing that compliments good bacon like a fresh ripe tomato. The perfect pairing.

It's unfortunate Whole Foods choses to make Facebook a requirement. I think they could give another option for those few of us who are not Facebook fools, but still love Whole Foods and bacon! Bummer! We love bacon!

I like to keep it simple when I eat Bacon. I enjoy it the most, alone. I mean, on it's own, not, necessarily, when I am physically alone, although, it certainly cheers me up when I am lonely. Ah yes, that savory slice of bacon when one is sad causes the heart to smile, to soar, to sing!!! Well, maybe I am romanticizing Bacon. But, I love it so, I shout it's greatness to the highest heights. Have some. You will join me!

BLT with a side of maple bacon cupcakes! You know how to make a BLT, I bet (add avocado for some extra yum!), and maple bacon cupcakes are almost as easy! FOR THE CUPCAKES (taste similar to pancakes) 2 call purpose flour 1 Tbspsugar 2 tspbaking powder 1 tspsalt 1 1/2 cwhole milk 2eggs 2 Tbspunsalted butter, melted and cooled FOR THE FROSTING 1 cunsalted butter, at room temperature 2 1/2 cpowdered sugar 3 Tbspmaple syrup 1 tspvanilla extract 3 slcbacon, cooked, cooled and crumbled Directions 1 Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Line a standard muffin pan with liners and then spray the liners with non-stick spray - very important. 2 Whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt in a large bowl; set aside. In a separate medium bowl whisk together the milk and eggs, then stir in the melted and cooled butter. Add the milk mixture to the dry ingredients and whisk together until just moistened and combined. Like pancakes, lumps are okay! Divide the batter between the muffin cups and bake until puffed and firm to the touch, about 10 minutes. Let cool for about 5 minutes and then remove cupcakes to a wire rack to cool completely. 3 To make the frosting, use the whisk attachment of a stand mixer to whip the butter on medium-high speed for about 5 minutes, scraping the bowl as needed. Reduce the mixer speed to low and add the powdered sugar a little at a time, waiting until it’s mostly incorporated before adding more. Once all of the powdered sugar has been added, scrape the sides of the bowl and increase the speed to medium-high and whip until fluffy, 1 to 2 minutes. Add the maple syrup and the vanilla and whip for another minute or so to incorporate. Add the bacon and mix to combine. Using an offset spatula, spread the frosting on the cupcakes. Top with additional crumbled bacon if desired.

I have always been a fan of bacon and now even more so with a better product from Whole Foods! Whether snacking on freshly cooked strips or sprinkling pieces in salad, on eggs or whatever, I can now enjoy my splurge food happily knowing it comes from a great source. I look forward to winning a year's supply so that I can experiment more with my cooking. Thank you for this chance!

At Secondwind Farm, our small farm on an island off the coast of Maine, we raise heritage-breed chickens so that we can have lots of fresh eggs. Nothing tastes better for breakfast than an egg fresh from the hen house and bacon. We love the Whole Foods brand of uncured bacon. So does our farm collie, Gertie. The chickens, however, would rather eat Japanese beetles. Go figure.

Oh my...there's nothing better than sliced tomatoes w/balsamic vinegar & olive oil...perhaps a little goat cheese. The best bacon is pan fried in an iron skillet...easy clean-up with your coffee grinds from your morning coffee.

I really like a recipe I have for red beans with rice and bacon. It's healthy, especially if made with brown rice, but most agree it is just plain tasty!

A while ago a friend and I were talking about how there were five things that just make everything better: coffee, chocolate, bacon, garlic, and friends. If we could somehow combine those things we surmised that we would be on to a good thing indeed! The challenge, however, was how we could possibly combine things like garlic, bacon, and chocolate. The solution? A dry rub for bacon that included instant coffee, cocoa powder, garlic powder, brown sugar, and cumin (all VERY carefully balanced to taste), served at a brunch with friends!

Let me just say that I live with three teenage boys, who love bacon. So being the health conscious person that I am I would prefer that they didn't ask for bacon every time that I go to the store, but when I do buckle down and buy it, I go all out creating a toasted sesame bagels, tomatoes, avocado, mayonnaise and bacon sandwich for them all to enjoy.

Bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwiches scream "it's summertime!" Notice bacon comes first because it is most important! Plus, the best way to eat bacon is with eggs. A bite of bacon with a bite of egg makes the egg taste so much better!
