Make a Simple Green Resolution and Win!

Earth Day is Wednesday, April 22. In celebration of our planet's big day, why not take a moment to make a simple green resolution for the coming year? Happy Earth Day 2009Here's mine: Bike to work at least once a week. Full disclosure: The last time I owned a bike, it was a blue Schwinn with a hot pink basket and I was 10. Sadly, I've outgrown that bike. But now, after months of bugging my friends for bike recommendations and visiting all of the bike shops around town, I've narrowed down my choices and am finally ready to invest in an "adult" bike at last. By this Earth Day, I am determined to be a proud bike owner/commuter/road warrior at least once a week. Why not every day? After years of making (and always breaking) grandiose New Year's resolutions, I've learned that the simple, realistic changes are the ones that really last. Now it's your turn. Tell us one simple green change you're planning to make for Earth Day. Everyone who enters a comment on this post between now and April 30th will be entered to win a $25 Whole Foods Market gift card and a FEED 100 bag. The winner will be announced the first week of May in our Whole Story blog, so stay tuned! And even if you don't win the prizes, your green resolution efforts will be rewarded with a cleaner, greener, healthier planet for many Earth Days to come. Here's to wishing you and yours a Merry Earth Day and a Happy Earth Year! Check out more green ideas on our Whole Story blog. Visit our website for more Earth Month tips, trivia, contests and more. I will only have the TV on when I am actually watching it, which in reality is almost never, and not just for background noise. Happy Earth Day everyone!

My resolution - While shopping at Whole Foods stop forgetting my reusable bags! I buy new ones every time I am there and now have at least 20 bags! Secondly, we will turn off the tv, snuggle and play games or put on our sneakers and play outside!!

Tiffany says …

I'm a retail manager and my green resolution is to teach my associates to be more green by using less paper towels, turning out the breakroom light when not in use, try to sell more reusable bags!!

We're replacing all of our current regular bulbs with CFLs, have replaced the outside lights with LEDs or solar-powered lights, and this year we will replace our other lights with CFLs and recycle everything we replace. I've just acquired some reusable bags to keep in the car for trips to the grocery store and will also use them in other stores. I'm putting a nylon bag that's tiny when folded into my purse for unexpected purchases and starting this week, will take along our own reusable containers for left-overs when we eat out. And this week, I will look into solar hot water for our soon-to-be-replaced hot water heater. We live in Arizona where the sun nearly always shines. Why not use it?!?

Jeff says …

I am going to take less napkins at restaurants. Make sure I always have re-usable bags for shopping, and cut back on bottled water and use a re-usable water bottle.

Janice says …

I am committing to buying local and organic as much as possible and plan on increasing my intake of fruits & vegetables and decreasing my intake of beef and poultry. I had no idea how awful industrailized farming was until I read, Food Matters by Mark Bittman.

I resolve to hang all my clothes outside. I will plan my laundry days around the weather and keep my dryer off. Not a small task in a 5 person household :) Great excuse to get outside in the middle of an otherwise odious task.

Maya says …

To stop using a dryer for my clothes, what a waste of energy when there is a nice breeze outside! And to shop for local products, to reduce the amount of energy needed for transportation and support local business and retailers.

Nicole says …

I will use reusable bags at every store.

I bought extra cloth bags and am keeping them in the car so that I have bags in the kitchen to grab and bags in the car for those last minute trips. I love the feelings I have when I cart my items away in my own bags. Happy Earth Day!

Cindy Horne says …

I will start a compost pile! Along with a compost pile, I will plant a veggie garden for to suplement our veggie use

I pledge to bring home for recycling all recyclables I produce at the office that can not be recycled there. I also pledge not to take the bus to work whenever I can and not take the car just because it's "more convenient" on that day.

Joanna says …

I'm going to make more of an effort to keep my reusable grocery bags in the car so that they're there when I need them! Also, just the other day, I picked up a few new kitchen and bathroom cleaners that are more eco-friendly... I plan to make this a more regular choice!

Olivia says …

I resolve to always use my non-toxic, eco-friendly Sigg bottle while on the go instead of the bottled water or drinks I am used to!

Going forward..I plan on recycling at home (since I already do at work) and leaving my reusable bags in my trunk so I never forget to take them with me!! : )

Kim says …

I resolve to recycle (plastic, glass, newspapers...) as much as I can in my dorm even though it's not required and I'm sometimes teased for wanting to go green! Also, I'll turn off the lights during the day when the natural sunlight is enough to keep my room bright.

Amy roche says …

I will grow my own garden and share it with others

Jennifer says …

I've spent the past year learning about eating (cooking delicious meals from scratch, importance of organic produce), as well as learning about how to live in a healthier home (minimizing indoor pollution, body products free of synthetic chemicals, safe cleaning products), and now I am onto learning more about how nature works, starting with adding more plants into my home as well as gardening (growing produce, flowers, and creating bonsai trees). I am looking forward to deepening my respect for plants as I learn to nurture them.

Yuki says …

My green resolution is CSA. I've started buying vegetables and fruits directly from local farms. This way my family have no choice but to eat all the produce that come in a weekly box and I have to be creative to cook them. We've definitely been eating more vegetables since started CSA. Support your local community!

Michelle Femminella says …

I will compost this year. I have already picked out the area in my yard and have purchased the needed supplies.

Esther says …

I pledge to reduce water use in the next month. I will take cold showers and of course, invite a shower buddy and keep each other warm in the cold water =)

Susanna says …

I work in a library and we have to print out labels daily to send out interlibrary books and DVD's. I will use the backside of old flyers, letters, etc. to print these labels and save tons of paper (and trees) this year!
