Matchmaker...Find Me a Holiday Wine Match!

By Our Wine Guys, December 17, 2010  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Our Wine Guys
One of the most frequent questions we get year-round but especially during the holidays is how to pair wines with everything from party edibles to cheese boards to the big holiday feast. Although there are general pairing principles, the main thing to know is to buy a wine you enjoy and try it out with flavors that you like. Wine pairing is first and foremost about your preferences! That said, we do enjoy giving a few tips along the way and are especially excited to share some of our favorite pairings with our affordable, easy-going Top Ten holiday wines. We’ve searched the world to find these top-notch wines at easy-to-swallow prices – all under $15 – for your enjoyment this holiday season and we’d love nothing more than to play matchmaker for you! To get started, we’ll share our favorite pairings for these scrumptious white wines – all tasty choices for your holiday festivities! And stay tuned, we’ll share the love with our bold and beautiful Top Ten reds in the coming days. DE CHANCENEY CRÉMANT DE LOIRE During the holidays, we feel it’s always appropriate to pop open the bubbly! We like to pair this tremendous, fresh French bubbly with our Isigny Ste. Mère Brie, a Whole Foods Market holiday exclusive. The creaminess of the brie brings out the cherry in the wine for a dynamic duo for any celebration. Enjoy the bubbly and brie just like it is or try Baked Apple and Brie Canapés as an impressive and easy appetizer. RÖMERHOF RIESLING This crisp, award-winning German white, made by a family with 400 years of wine history, really knows how to get along easily with holiday flavors. Apple and pear flavors make its crisp finish perfect for traditional as well as spicy dishes. For a cheese pairing, we recommend Fourme D’Ambert blue cheese, which provides the perfect sweet and savory flavors with this cheery Riesling. For a fresh take on turkey and stuffing that plays well with this crisp wine, we recommend Roasted Turkey with Sage Butter and Rapini-Rice Stuffing. CHALONE VINEYARD SAUVIGNON BLANC Enjoy this bright California white with lighter meals, or sip in between the season’s big feasts. With its tropical fruit, melon and spice with lemongrass aroma, you get a mouthful of flavor that works well for fresh oysters, salads and, one of our personal favorites, 365 Everyday Value® Organic Goat Cheese. The texture and the creaminess of the goat cheese rounds out the acidity of this grassy Sauvignon Blanc. Pairs well with Savory Fig and Goat Cheese Tart with Arugula. SIMONETTE FEBVRE SAINT-BRIS SAUVIGNON Fresh and aromatic, the Saint-Bris has quickly become a favorite of this year’s Top Ten wines. For an unforgettable present for your guests, pair this sauvignon’s minerality and citrus zest with the soft-ripened goat’s milk pyramid cheese, Cypress Grove Lil’ Ziggy. For a festive brunch or lunch, serve the Saint-Bris with Easy Shrimp and Grits. EARTHSTONE CHARDONNAY If there’s any time of the year that calls for flexibility, it’s the holidays, right? We’ve got just the right white wine that’s ever so versatile with its bright apple notes and spicy vanilla touch. The Earthstone Chardonnay goes just right with a rotisserie chicken, Cowgirl Creamery Organic Buckaroo cheese or Roasted Duck with Pomegranate Glaze. LOUIS LATOUR POUILLY-FUISSÉ This fruity, green-gold French chardonnay makes a delightful companion to another one of our French favorites, creamy Hervé Mons Camembert, a Whole Foods Market exclusive.  This vibrant white also pairs well with seafood favorites such as lobster tails or Salmon Chowder. Pairing the perfect wine with holiday flavors doesn’t have to be daunting. Remember the first rule: Drink what you like! Loved the Estancia Pinor Noir! Thanks for making it so easy to grab a great bottle of wine for a dinner party and know that it's already been vetted!
