New Putumayo: Acoustic Dreamland

THANK YOU FOR ALL OF YOUR COMMENTS! CONGRATULATIONS TO MICHAEL DIPIETRO FROM NEW YORK CITY FOR WINNING THE 5-CD SET FROM PUTUMAYO'S "DREAMLAND" SERIES. Read on to enter to win a 5-CD set from Putumayo’s Dreamland series. Dan Storper is the CEO and Founder of Putumayo World Music. Over the years, Putumayo Kids, which began in 1999, has released 20 CD collections to help introduce children to other cultures through fun music from around the world. Though best known for its fun, upbeat Playground series, Putumayo Kids has been quietly releasing albums that have become staples for parents to help their young children fall asleep. Surprisingly, parents have enjoyed these Dreamland CDs as much as their kids! They help just about anyone relax and wind down after the stresses of the day. With Acoustic Dreamland, I wanted to bring together beautiful English-language songs recorded by some off my favorite performers of adult and children’s music. We’ve also included a mini-storybook featuring the lyrics of the song Dreamland that parents and children can read or sing along to. Written by Mary Chapin Carpenter and sung by Lucy Kaplansky, it’s a lovely tale of falling asleep and dreaming of distant places. I’ve tested these songs on my 5-year-old son and they have really helped him ease into sleep. In addition to original songs, the collection also features songs written by James Taylor (You Can Close Your Eyes), Allman Brothers (Blue Sky) and Wilco (My Darling). You’ll find Acoustic Dreamland in most Whole Foods Market stores now. Do you like to fall asleep listening to music? What are your favorite relaxing tunes? Leave a comment below by March 8th for a chance to win a 5 CD collection from our Dreamland series.

Our family is an international one. We enjoy different cultures, eating ethnic foods and listening to international folk songs and learning international folk dances. It is always important to learn to wind down, so these relaxing tunes would be nice to have.

I have the old Dreamland CD as well as many other Putumayo recordings. I work with young children and love to expose them to music and language that may be new to them. I use many Putumayo CDs at my school, some for rest, some for dancing but all for the joy they bring to me and the kids. Can't wait to hear this new one!

I love to play or sing my son lullabies. We listen to music from all over the world, and yes, to Putumayo CDs, too. I've brought my international music to my classroom too, to relax my young students and to teach songs from many lands.

I only fall asleep to music once in a great while. When I do I like nature sounds, smooth jazz or classical. I have listened to some of your cds before and I own a couple-would love to own more!

I've never heard of the Putamayo CD's... I'll have to see if my library has them. AS far as a dreamland CD - no, we do not listen to musoc when going to bed. We do, however, tend to put in relaxing CDs in the car when it's getting close to (or is past) bedtime and we still have to travel to our destination. My son is not one of those that zonks out immediately in the car :-)

My husband is a pianist, so our house if filled with music all day long. He practices every night, which is what I hear as I head off to bed. I'm about to go to bed and relax to the last few minutes of a Mahler piano quartet.

I was introduced to Putamayo at Gymboree. My daughter loves the rhythms, and I love the variety. Also, my husband is from South Africa, and we love to hear some of the groups he remembers.

Actually, what makes me sleepy, is when I'm singing to "lullaby's Under the Moon" to my daughter when she's trying to go to sleep. So sweet...

We have satellite TV. It has an amazing array of music stations to listen to while relaxing in bed. I love to listen to the Jam Band station or the Grateful Dead station. Maybe not the most relaxing tunes for a lot of people, but it does the trick for me. It helps me remember many happy summer nights under the stars at the best concerts ever.

This is SO eerie -- my husband and I are moving to a new home, so I've been purging our belongings. Just today I went through our CDs and decided to donate the vast majority of them. However, I kept our Putumayo "Latino! Latino!" CD because we played it over and over to our kids when they were young. Just looking at the cover makes me smile. Putumayo rocks!

Cindy says …

Since I was a child, I loved drifting off to sleep carried along by music, from far away magic lands - and soon the happy dreamland adventures begin! And to this day, I believe the night is safe and wraps itself around me, awake or asleep.

My kids find many of Norah Jones' songs very relaxing; her voice has a very dreamlike quality to it.

Ria says …

We have 2 Putumayo CD's and have enjoyed them for many years. Our most favorite is a kids sampler that we got from our best friends after our first child was born. I personaly love all the songs from that album in all the different languages; they are cheerfull and even if I do not know what they are exactly saying, I just love to sing alone. Today, I was talking about it with my 4 year old daughter, discussing what her favorite song was and whether it matter if she understood what was being said. We both like the french song best (we have cannot find the box and original cd anymore so do not know the titles) and would be very curious to hear and relax with the dreamland version of Putumayo
