New Putumayo: Acoustic Dreamland

THANK YOU FOR ALL OF YOUR COMMENTS! CONGRATULATIONS TO MICHAEL DIPIETRO FROM NEW YORK CITY FOR WINNING THE 5-CD SET FROM PUTUMAYO'S "DREAMLAND" SERIES. Read on to enter to win a 5-CD set from Putumayo’s Dreamland series. Dan Storper is the CEO and Founder of Putumayo World Music. Over the years, Putumayo Kids, which began in 1999, has released 20 CD collections to help introduce children to other cultures through fun music from around the world. Though best known for its fun, upbeat Playground series, Putumayo Kids has been quietly releasing albums that have become staples for parents to help their young children fall asleep. Surprisingly, parents have enjoyed these Dreamland CDs as much as their kids! They help just about anyone relax and wind down after the stresses of the day. With Acoustic Dreamland, I wanted to bring together beautiful English-language songs recorded by some off my favorite performers of adult and children’s music. We’ve also included a mini-storybook featuring the lyrics of the song Dreamland that parents and children can read or sing along to. Written by Mary Chapin Carpenter and sung by Lucy Kaplansky, it’s a lovely tale of falling asleep and dreaming of distant places. I’ve tested these songs on my 5-year-old son and they have really helped him ease into sleep. In addition to original songs, the collection also features songs written by James Taylor (You Can Close Your Eyes), Allman Brothers (Blue Sky) and Wilco (My Darling). You’ll find Acoustic Dreamland in most Whole Foods Market stores now. Do you like to fall asleep listening to music? What are your favorite relaxing tunes? Leave a comment below by March 8th for a chance to win a 5 CD collection from our Dreamland series.

When I was a child I used to listen to music to fall asleep, usually something classical or soothing. I don't have to as an adult, but I do love a soothing CD during a bubble bath as I wind down prior to bed.

Putamayo is a great series for kids (and adults). It opens up their minds to various musical styles around the world and begins conversations about other countries and cultures.

What a great series this must be. I love all their CDs. Sure they must be beautiful, great for relaxing after a stessful day or to use while doing excerise, reiki, etc.

I love the Putumayo CDs and have bought several for my kids over the years. It's a wonderful way to interest them in world music and keep them away from a lot of the less desirable selections on the radio.

Kathryn says …

I love falling asleep to music, but I haven't done it for years because my husband likes dead silence! I usually use nature sounds of some sort, however I love Putumayo music so I know this would be a hit. Maybe I could even convert my husband with this lovely music!

Oh, I LOVE Putumayo Records!! I have about 10 of them and thrill to their variety of music--African, Italian, Jewish, Gypsy, Caribbean. They're all "my people!" But I don't have any Putumayo Kids albums . . .

When I was in High school I played lots of sports and kept a really busy schedule. I used to listen to Yanni, Kenny G, or other classical music to fall asleep. Sometimes, just the sound of a whale's song was all it took. Now, I have a 4 month old and I'm looking for great tunes for him.

Anika says …

Can't wait to hear it.

My kids would LOVE this. My 2 kids love to listen to classical music, Jack Johnson, the great Bob Marley and their new found favorite is "A duck in New York City" by Connie Kaldor. It's really cute and original music. They also love to listen to audio books. My daughter is almost 8 years old and loves "Poppy" by Avi. A great story about woodland animals. I've found my kids really enjoy going to bed, relaxing, being calm and listening. It's great! I can just see the wheels of imagination turning when they listen to all these great tunes and stories.

Rockabye, Sweet Baby James. (There's the old line: Your favorite James Taylor song is whichever last James Taylor song you listened to.)

This music is wonderful! Hope I win!

I like to fall asleep to the sounds of the ocean. If I want music for sleep it'd be the dreamy Irish instrumentals, but James Taylor's You can Close Your Eyes or Wilco's My Darling would give me very fine dreams, night or day. Acoustic Dreamland would be a wonderful CD to have for when my Grandson stays over. He likes to listen to music at bedtime.

Karla B. says …

I love to relax to Celtic music. Sitting by the fire staring out over the lake. Ahhh. Peaceful. I also enjoy listening to soothing African music. Either one will lower your blood pressure in no time. :o)

I'm always plugging Putumayo Kids! I just love their stuff. A few years ago when my oldest was an infant, we got their Sesame Street CD. Since then, we've purchased dozens of them. Can't wait to get this one too.

We heart falling asleep to music. I sing my girls to sleep. Favorite lullabye CDs are any of the Rockabye Baby! Lullaby Renditions series. They include lullabye renditions of ColdPlay, Queen, Journey, The Beatles, etc.. It's a great way for both parents and kidlets to fall asleep.

Rinchen says …

I often listen to my IPOD to help me fall asleep. I like some of the more meditative songs like Rise, by A. R. Rahman. My grandson who is 8 months old falls asleep if I put on baby white noise from Pediasleep.

We have a Putamayo cd and since the moment we got it, it plays always in the car stereo and it comes with us in every journey we make... the little journeys as bringing kids to school in the morning or going to the supermarket and the big ones as going on vacation. The cd is always with us! It would be absolutely great to have a cd that could bring us in the dreaming journey!!!

Shari says …

I am going to Whole Foods today to pick up some of these CDs for my two year old...and for me too. I like having this type of music playing in the house (and in the car) anytime of day...very relaxing!

Deborah Albee says …

I was a special needs teacher for over 30 years and have utilized these CD's for a variety of different activities with my students. They make for lovely accompaniment for playing our instruments at circle time. They introduce the children to the sounds and languages from different cultures. My favorites are the lullabies which provide a wonderful relaxing environment for rest time following a busy morning of work and therapy. I continue to share them with my grandson now that I am retired, we love to paint/dance/laugh together to the wonderful rhythmic melodies. They have provided my students/family/and myself much joy over the years. Thank you Putumayo!!

Jennifer Cheng says …

While I don't like to listen to music while I go to sleep, my little girl does. She actually prefers music like this cd exactly! We once bought her something a little more kid-centric and she has gone back to her relaxation music every time!
