Rumba, Mambo and Cha Cha Cha

THE CONTEST IS NOW OVER AND WE WILL ANNOUNCE THE WINNER SHORTLY. THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR COMMENTS! Read on to enter to win a 12-CD set from Putumayo’s Latin Collection. Dan Storper is the CEO and Founder of Putumayo World Music. As a young kid growing up in the 1950s, I remember watching my parents and their friends dancing the mambo and cha cha cha. While these weren’t styles they’d grown up with, it was easy to see the joy the music brought them. By the time Desi Arnaz aka “Rickie Ricardo” of I Love Lucy fame arrived on TV, these styles had become global phenomena and were being danced in every corner of the world. Fast forward to today and they’ve made a powerful comeback on TV dance shows and in dance studios and night clubs from Austin to Aberdeen. Just in time for Cinco de Mayo, Putumayo’s new release, Rumba, Mambo and Cha Cha Cha, demonstrates the universal and lasting appeal of this retro-flavored music. And, since it provided the mellower underpinnings of the salsa boom that occurred a couple of decades later, it has similar appeal that brought global acclaim to the  Buena Vista Social Club artists. As an indication of the music’s global popularity, this collection not only features several groups from Cuba, but also Latin bands from Scotland, Belgium, France and Russia. Rumba, Mambo, Cha Cha Cha is now available in many Whole Foods Market stores along with other Putumayo Latin and international CD collections. So, what’s your favorite Latin music style? Leave a comment below by May 4th for a chance to win a 12-CD collection from our Latin series. THE CONTEST IS NOW OVER AND WE WILL ANNOUNCE THE WINNER SHORTLY. THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR COMMENTS!

I love all latin music and my latin man!

I love clothes cut on the diagonal, suprising flavors, and cha-cha-cha with all it's improvisational possibilities. Dance dance dance! One, two, cha-cha-cha! I fell in love with the Buena Vista Social Club on the beach in Florida, and fell deeper in love with their music, watching them play in their native land (Cuba) in a documentary recently on channel 9 - I would love to win this Putumayo collection to enjoy!

I really enjoy the Latin fusion - mixing the Latin styles with jazz, rock, African/world-beat, and lately even some rap>

I love fresh smells and clean and green: not chemicals and toxic and mean!

Love the latin beats!!! Fiery, passionate, hot, active -- what everyone needs for the summer time!

Romas says …

The Tango - nothing beats it for seductive moves. I take up the whole dance floor when dancing a tango. But honestly the cha cha is right behind it. And I would be lying if I didn't tell you that all the latin dances are exciting and fun to dance. How about the Lambada? That was a fun one.

Great way to get into spring! Need to get moving and work off the winter insulation! :)

I don't really have a favorite, but love them all as Latin Music is a reminder that life is for the living and dancing is much more living than sitting.

I don't have a favorite Latin music, but loved being exposed to different cultures through music. I have the New Orleans Putomayo music, and my children and I love it. I'm sure we would enjoy the Latin as well!

Depending on my mood, either merengue or perhaps a bit of bossa nova.

I love the Cha-Cha! Especially Tito Puente! We love the latin rhythms so much, we're getting married on May 5, 2012, and having live cha-cha for the cocktail hour. Thanks for the spice, Putumayo!

Latin music is so exotic and sensual, but my knowledge of various artists in the genre is limited. I do love to dance around to the hot sounds on the Georges Collinet "Afropop Worldwide" show on NPR (it makes cleaning the house so much more enjoyable). My husband and I are considering taking latin dance classes, and a music library would certainly be welcome! Thank you.

Give me a Latin man who can dance and a Latin groove from a live band...bossa nova, mariachi/ranchera, salsa, Cubanismo, flamenco or tango...and I am one very happy woman! I love everything about Latin-flavored music and a 12-cd set from the Putumayo collection would be out-of-this world magnificent! :)

I honestly cannot choose a specific latin music style because I love when I get a smattering of all the different styles. Variety is the spice of life.

Cha Cha!! One of the best Latin dances among so many. It's so versatile and so much fun! Who can't appreciate a envigorating Latin dance routine? This is a great prize and will bring hundreds of hours of satisfaction and joy to the winner. My whole family enjoys ballroom dancing and this Putumayo collection will be shared with our dance club.

Salsa. I have great memories of being in a small local bar in Baja, Mexico and learning the steps to this fun and simple dance (well the basic steps at least). All the people teaching me were so sweet and patient.

Tough choice but I'd have to say Bachata! I can always recognize which dance to do when I hear it, which is not always the case with the other Latin songs.
