Rumba, Mambo and Cha Cha Cha

THE CONTEST IS NOW OVER AND WE WILL ANNOUNCE THE WINNER SHORTLY. THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR COMMENTS! Read on to enter to win a 12-CD set from Putumayo’s Latin Collection. Dan Storper is the CEO and Founder of Putumayo World Music. As a young kid growing up in the 1950s, I remember watching my parents and their friends dancing the mambo and cha cha cha. While these weren’t styles they’d grown up with, it was easy to see the joy the music brought them. By the time Desi Arnaz aka “Rickie Ricardo” of I Love Lucy fame arrived on TV, these styles had become global phenomena and were being danced in every corner of the world. Fast forward to today and they’ve made a powerful comeback on TV dance shows and in dance studios and night clubs from Austin to Aberdeen. Just in time for Cinco de Mayo, Putumayo’s new release, Rumba, Mambo and Cha Cha Cha, demonstrates the universal and lasting appeal of this retro-flavored music. And, since it provided the mellower underpinnings of the salsa boom that occurred a couple of decades later, it has similar appeal that brought global acclaim to the  Buena Vista Social Club artists. As an indication of the music’s global popularity, this collection not only features several groups from Cuba, but also Latin bands from Scotland, Belgium, France and Russia. Rumba, Mambo, Cha Cha Cha is now available in many Whole Foods Market stores along with other Putumayo Latin and international CD collections. So, what’s your favorite Latin music style? Leave a comment below by May 4th for a chance to win a 12-CD collection from our Latin series. THE CONTEST IS NOW OVER AND WE WILL ANNOUNCE THE WINNER SHORTLY. THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR COMMENTS!

Years ago my husband and I took dance lessons so we wouldn't look like complete putz's on the dance floor at our wedding. (In the end, The DJ played the wrong song so I don't know how much it helped us) but we loved learning all the various dances especially the cha cha - so much fun - even for my husband who does NOT dance. Our family absolutely LOVES the putumayo CD's (My first was Paris - bought it in a small shop in CT as a gift to my mother). We would LOVE this collection - I actually plan to donate it to our non profit Montessori school as the children have such an intense LOVE for music and I think this is a great way to expose them to music from other cultures. Thank you for the opportunity!

I can't dance worth a lick, but I love listening to anything with a latin rhythm when I need to get up and move at home (exercise, housework, cooking - whatever). I like old mariachi songs, new cumbia beats...I'm still learning about the multitude of styles out there!

Robert Launay says …

My favorite Latin style is trova, a style which is all about words and melody rather than beat. Obviously, it helps to understand Spanish to appreciate it. At its best, it is a combination of poignant lyricism and biting social commentary.

Latin music is so upbeat and happy that it would be perfect for back yard parties to welcome summer. It makes everyone feel upbeat and like dancing! We need this collection to take us out of the winter blues!

Back around 2005, the husband and I had the priviledge of having dinner at what was then Babalu's in Minneapolis. We had no idea that at 9 o'clock they cleared part of the dining room for Salsa dancing and a nine piece band. WOW! What a show! It was fabulous to watch. Surprisingly we have very little of this music. It would be wonderful to add this to our burgeoning collection of music to enjoy and share with our 3 yr old daughter.

I visited Puerto Rico last year and we heard latin /salsa music at several different establishments. Absolutely loved it. If we were sitting our feet and hands were moving to the music. If we were standing our whole body was flowing with the music. It touches your soul and brings the light to the surface. Awesome. Would love to add Putumayo's CD's to my music collection. Thanks for the opportunity.

Meringue is my favorite latin style music. It takes me back to memories of house parties in my Bronx neighborhood, when I was a child. I can recall the food and laughter at these gatherings. Many of them were multi-generational, and the music just made everyone want to dance.

Years ago I bought a voodoo drum in Haiti and when I brought it with me into Cuba they were chanting "Cha, cha, cha." I had no idea what they meant. This was in the 1950's and I sure do know now what that meant!! Loved doing the cha-cha with my late husband.

Jamie Benefiel says …

I have travelled all around Latin America - Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Belize, & Peru. I love all Latin music. One of my favorite memories was getting on a bus in Veracruz, Mexico & festive dance music was playing. Was such a fun experience.

Karen E. says …

I love all Latin music. Since my husband and I were dating 31 years ago, we would go to Latin clubs and dance the night away. The energy your body gets from moving your hips and feet to the Latin rhythmus is indescribable!! I have to tear my husband away from the headphones in Whole Foods because he is constantly listening to the CD's and moving his hips to the Putumayo collection. It is always such a decision as which CD to purchase. This past summer we had the pleasure of seeing the Buena Vista Social Club featuring Omara Poruondo at Ravinia which was a magical night of music and dancing. I do not know of one person who can sit or stand still while listening to any Latin music. Bailar….bailar….

Ivy says …

I love Bomboleo - the group and music!! It is wonderful gumbo of sounds and rhythms that insist on your body moving!

Jennie says …
