Rumba, Mambo and Cha Cha Cha

THE CONTEST IS NOW OVER AND WE WILL ANNOUNCE THE WINNER SHORTLY. THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR COMMENTS! Read on to enter to win a 12-CD set from Putumayo’s Latin Collection. Dan Storper is the CEO and Founder of Putumayo World Music. As a young kid growing up in the 1950s, I remember watching my parents and their friends dancing the mambo and cha cha cha. While these weren’t styles they’d grown up with, it was easy to see the joy the music brought them. By the time Desi Arnaz aka “Rickie Ricardo” of I Love Lucy fame arrived on TV, these styles had become global phenomena and were being danced in every corner of the world. Fast forward to today and they’ve made a powerful comeback on TV dance shows and in dance studios and night clubs from Austin to Aberdeen. Just in time for Cinco de Mayo, Putumayo’s new release, Rumba, Mambo and Cha Cha Cha, demonstrates the universal and lasting appeal of this retro-flavored music. And, since it provided the mellower underpinnings of the salsa boom that occurred a couple of decades later, it has similar appeal that brought global acclaim to the  Buena Vista Social Club artists. As an indication of the music’s global popularity, this collection not only features several groups from Cuba, but also Latin bands from Scotland, Belgium, France and Russia. Rumba, Mambo, Cha Cha Cha is now available in many Whole Foods Market stores along with other Putumayo Latin and international CD collections. So, what’s your favorite Latin music style? Leave a comment below by May 4th for a chance to win a 12-CD collection from our Latin series. THE CONTEST IS NOW OVER AND WE WILL ANNOUNCE THE WINNER SHORTLY. THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR COMMENTS!

I love all things Latin. Born & raised in Costa Rica with a Cuban grandmother, who's had a strong pulse on latin music. The house was filled with aromas of arroz con pollo, flan & Celia Cruz...you knew when abuelita paid a visit. Kids playing, laughter, great food & dancing to mambo, salsa & all was well...miss my Abuelita.

I love Chacha, Salsa, Mambo and Rumba. I started taking Latin dance a few years ago, mostly iternational style. It is very different from American Ballroom, which I like and certainly from ballet. It is earthy and just soo much fun! I'd love to add these Putumayo Latin cds to my collection.

We took a trip to Costa Rica and picked up a CD of a local band there. So, a lot of this type of music brings me back.

I love, love, love all things Latin. Born & raised in Costa Rica with a Cuban grandmother, who's had a strong pulse on latin music. I grew up around a musical family. Couldn't breathe without it. One of my fondest memories, was when Abuela or grandma came for a visit. You were guaranteed great food, laughter, dancing...fun! She loved creating a festive family experience. Cinco de Mayo, or any holiday offerd a wonderful oppoertunity for her to express her creaticity. You knew when abuelita was around. The house was filled with aromas of arroz con pollo, flan & Celia Cruz...you knew when abuelita paid a visit. Kids playing, laughter, great food & dancing to the rythmns of rumba, mambo, salsa & all was well...miss my Abuelita.

I'm not very familiar with Latin music but all the more reason why I know I'd love these cd's. Hearing it on past vacation trips or when I've been to East Harlem (I live in New York) it puts a big smile on my face. My family has a collection of some other Putumayo cds and I just love the diversity of the music in my home!

why choose only one style?

I like cumbias best. I come from a family of 6 kids. My dad was the best dad ever! I like to think I was his favorite because he certainly was my favorite. There was this cumbia called "Rosemaria" (named after me of course, just kidding) anyhow it goes like this: "Rosamaria se whey a la playa, a la playa para baniad" (I know it's all spelled wrong) But, it means: Rosamaria went to the beach to bathe, etc......The special part is, no matter where I was if that song was on and my dad was anywhere near by, he'd find me to dance with him. In those days families went to dances together and it sounded even better when played live with the horns, and violins, and a crowded dance floor with me and my dad dancing right in the middle!! Those were the days! I really miss him. The store I show at is in Roseville, Ca.

meredith bruner says …

I love latin music, but Merengue must be my favorite! I loove Elvis Crespo! I also have been listening to Marta Sanchez as of late, and of course Shakira!!

Lola Enriquez says …

How do I enter for the Rumba, Mambo, Cha CHa contest?

Cynthia Podolnick says …

I LOVE Andean Folk Music! Present day Andean Folk Music is the product of centuries of cultural and ethnic intermixing. The highland music of Ecuador, Bolivia, Peru, Chile and Argentina forms the backbone of Andean folk music. There is no mainstream as each region and village is unique in terms of instruments, dance, tuning and rhythm. The richness and variety are seemingly without end. Many "modern" bands, Latino and otherwise, incorporate this music into thier own with wonderful results. It's like the "limon" of the music world - add it and it makes any music better!

Danah says …

I grew up in South Florida with many Latin influences on the music that we listened and danced to. Now, I live in Louisiana. My children are exposed to the many Cajun influences around us and I am always searching for opportunities for my children to experience Latin music, as well. I recently purchased the European CD and my children have truly enjoyed listening to it. My daughter has already memorized the song from Belgium. My husband used to live in Brussels and experiencing the music together is a great way for them to bond.

Lisa says …

I don't have one favorite Latin music style - I like it all!

I love the Samba - the flow of the steps. Latin music just makes you want to get up & dance !

Kerry Ecklebe says …

Putumayo music transports people to exotic locales. Everytime I listen to one of their CDs, I close my eyes and imagine the band, the dancing and the joie de vive. Few musical CDs have the power to allow the listener to experience the full spectrum of being immersed into another culture. So when days become hectic, just slide in a Putumayo CD and ESCAPE !

I wonder if there's any Tito Puente on this CD? No matter- will love it anyway if I get lucky:-)

Marcia says …

I also grew up watching Desi Arnaz and just loved the latin music beat. This music reminds me of my childhood. I reminds me that I need to expose my children to Latin music this Cinco de Mayo.

Arlene P. says …

I love this music. It makes you feel and act a little wild and makes you just want to move. Thank you.

Stacie A. Pizzolato says …

I love these styles of CD's! I have purchased them occassionally...Unfortunately, my adult children always "Borrow" them and forget to return them. So I would love to own a "WHOLE" set. Everytime I shop WHOLE FOODS I am tempted to purchase one at the register. I always feel so much better for purchasing at "Whole Foods" but when my budget doesn't allow me to splurge on a CD, I feel a bit incomplete...so hopefully, I can win this "whole" set and my life will be "completely whole" again!

Lourdes says …

Love the cha, cha, cha. It's happy, active music to dance/exercise and lift our spirits. No couch potato with this music!

Therese Awad says …

VIVA LA MUSICA LATINA !

Donna says …

I am a lover of music! The rhythm of Latin music makes you want to move. You can't listen to it without moving something! Since the explosion of Zumba fitness, I think more people are getting into “the rhythm” of it. I clean house (and dance) on Saturday mornings listing to Latin music. It's a change from my normal gym routine, plus I get the housework done too!

Stephanie says …

Cumbias' baby, I use to dance with dad, all around the dance floor. I do now listen to a variety of styles, picking some out for my Fiesta Party this August. Cha Cha Cha!

Alice says …

The latin beat is so romantic. I was lucky enough to go the the Copa Cabana in New York years ago and have loved salsa dancing ever since.

Allison Dorsett says …

Soothing. Seductive. Sassy. Latin jazz calls my name anytime of the day. It can relax me when I am feeling uptight, put me in a romantic mood even when I am wearing sweat pants, and make me dance, dance, dance the night away! But then again...all latin music calls my name. From Latin Rock to Latin Salsa, to Latin lounge!! Thanks for all things Latin!

Jane says …

I have been a fan of Putmayo both for teaching and at home. I don't have many Latin music CDs (mostly African) and would love to expand my collection. My favorite is the Rumba.
