Rumba, Mambo and Cha Cha Cha

THE CONTEST IS NOW OVER AND WE WILL ANNOUNCE THE WINNER SHORTLY. THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR COMMENTS! Read on to enter to win a 12-CD set from Putumayo’s Latin Collection. Dan Storper is the CEO and Founder of Putumayo World Music. As a young kid growing up in the 1950s, I remember watching my parents and their friends dancing the mambo and cha cha cha. While these weren’t styles they’d grown up with, it was easy to see the joy the music brought them. By the time Desi Arnaz aka “Rickie Ricardo” of I Love Lucy fame arrived on TV, these styles had become global phenomena and were being danced in every corner of the world. Fast forward to today and they’ve made a powerful comeback on TV dance shows and in dance studios and night clubs from Austin to Aberdeen. Just in time for Cinco de Mayo, Putumayo’s new release, Rumba, Mambo and Cha Cha Cha, demonstrates the universal and lasting appeal of this retro-flavored music. And, since it provided the mellower underpinnings of the salsa boom that occurred a couple of decades later, it has similar appeal that brought global acclaim to the  Buena Vista Social Club artists. As an indication of the music’s global popularity, this collection not only features several groups from Cuba, but also Latin bands from Scotland, Belgium, France and Russia. Rumba, Mambo, Cha Cha Cha is now available in many Whole Foods Market stores along with other Putumayo Latin and international CD collections. So, what’s your favorite Latin music style? Leave a comment below by May 4th for a chance to win a 12-CD collection from our Latin series. THE CONTEST IS NOW OVER AND WE WILL ANNOUNCE THE WINNER SHORTLY. THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR COMMENTS!

I do not yet have a favorite style of Latin Music. Perhaps you would be willing to introduce me to some through this CD set?

Jim W says …

The Latin rhythms really make you want to listen, sing and dance. It is music, not like the rap crap that's been playing on the airwaves.

I too remember Desi Arnaz and someone woman? on Johnny Carson shaking and saying something like "coochicoochi?" from my childhood. Although I do not celebrate Cinco de Mayo, I am a private music teacher and would like to expand my horizons. I love dance music and the stress-reducing rhumba.

Salsa is the best.

I love Latin music. I discovered Latin music at a party in a public park in San Jose, California when I was 15 in 1970. It was a warm afternoon and everyone was dancing and having a good time. Me too. I'm still dancing to Latin music. You can't hear Latin music without moving. I would love to win the Latin music CD's. I've purchase several of the Putumayo CD's for gifts and for myself. I also love Whole Foods. Happy Cinco de Mayo!

I need to get my chi flowing!

Mary-Margaret says …

My All Time Most Favorite Spanish music is the Merengue. I love the simple nature of the dance and in my experience, it's just a matter of moving one hips in clean ways of course. Next after that would have to be the Tango. Always such elegant, sophisticated sounding melodies. No complicated steps which I'm never able to master. Can never keep them straight in my head.

Wow, I grew up with the mambo, the cha cha cha, and the rhumba. I am a caribbean girl with Venezuela right next door, so latin music was everywhere. I enjoy dancing with my parents and sometimes friends. It was actually a part of my household growing up. I love the music. It is romantic and beautiful!

I love the sound of many sounds of Latin music. Guitar, strings, percussions all make my soul and body move to the beat. I like to twirl my granddaughter and dance with my kids and have fun. I like listening to classical spanish guitar and relaxing outside with a cold beer or maybe....margarita!!! Muy Bueno! It's all good!

I LOVE Salsa, Cumbia, Merengue, Mambo...really anything with a latin beat is contagious...I can't help but move to the beautiful rhythms. I was always a fan of this style of music, but became truly inspired after becoming a Zumba instructor and being able to teach others my passion for dance, fitness, and world music! I also have always admired the Putumayo World Music series...always an adventure in sound:)

Hello Whole Foods, Love, love, love Putumayo’s music!!! Been collecting since I went to Louisianna right after the hurricane... seen the Lake Charles area almost one year after Katrina and some of the areas were built back up, but the areas that were not had such an impact on me. I had gone to one of the local shops there and fell in love with the Putumayo music that was playing....so I would love to have the Mambo part of my collection. Thanks so much, Chris

Patrick Farrington says …

I love many styles of Latin music but my favorites are probably several of the types of Brazilian music.

lorraine ow says …

I love the way it feels when you dance to latin music. Whether it's the simple cha-cha or the mambo, your body can flow and melt right into the music. I have enjoyed the Putomayo records even before the birth of my children. And now, even they are enjoying the music I like. As for my favorite, I can dance longer with variations of the cha-cha, so that'll be my choice.

Alex says …

Born in Buenos Aires, I am partial to tango and the ballads of Carlos Gardel.

Linda flick says …

Buena Vista Social Club is brilliant!!!!!

A. Rose says …

Did someone say Putumayo Latin Collections? The hips are rocking and toes tapping in anticipation of the rhythms!!! Putumayo collections give more than perhaps realized with the exposure to the variety of Latin rhythms... Bueno Putumayo!!!

Amy says …

To think of my favorite Latin music brings me to reminisce of my favorite grade school memory...it was 3rd grade and my (much) older sisters forced me to watch the cult classic "Lambada: the Forbidden Dance." I was entranced ... how could such classy dancing that was complimented by such intriguing music be so misunderstood? I put it to the test at the next school sock hop which subsequently lead to my transfer of schools. This CD collection could be my sweet atonement as I relive my Latin dance dreams in the comfort of my private living room.

Doug says …

Putamayo’s music collection's are great, I enjoy quite a few of them, looking forward to listening to the Rumba, Mambo, Cha Cha Cha too.

My first real exposure to Latin style music was when I was in Dominican Republic. My group happened on a Merengue contest and the locals were so excited to have us there and wanted us to join in. Since then that music has always held a very special place in my heart. Latin dance music makes me want to MOVE!!!

mary says …

Donna Iafelice says …

Zumba for losing weight and keeping you active. So much fun you dont even know you are exercicing

Dianne Green says …

I love Latin American music in general. Each country or region has its own specific rhythms and instruments, some of which are made from local products such as gourds. And I love dancing to all that music! But if I must choose favorites, it would be marimba and Andean flute music. Those pipes produce sounds that move my soul.

Tom says …

I don't know if I have just one favorite style -- so I guess its fitting that I was introduced to Latin music through Buena Vista Social Club, a mix of many styles.

Janet says …

I like it all ... fun to listen to different styles

Rebecca says …
