A Simply Sweet Cherry Fest

By Elizabeth Smith, June 27, 2012  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Elizabeth Smith

I’ve got some juicy, plump, sweet news to share: it’s time for cherries, especially at Whole Foods Market®! Cherry Fest is our annual celebration of fresh cherries, one of the most anticipated fruits we sell. Whether creating something savory or sweet, or simply diving into a heaping bowl of chilled cherries, now is the time to celebrate this peak-season fruit and our stores are the place to find them. We source the best cherries – and plenty of them – so our stores have enough cherries for all of your cherry needs.

Now that you know where to find them, let’s talk about how to select the tastiest cherries. Here are a five steps to help you…well, you know, cherry-pick the best of the basket.

How to Pick a Sweet Cherry

Check the stems. Fresh cherries have green stems

Give them a feel. Cherries should be firm, no soft spots or bruising

Look for the good color. Depending on variety, ideally they should be deep, bright red to mahogany

Give them the once over. Fruit should be free of insect damage and pitting (little indentations caused by dehydration)

Give them a taste. Be sure the amount of sugar in the fruit is high

Oh, and size matters for cherries. Keep in mind the larger the cherry, the more fruit (less pit) you get. We want you to celebrate Cherry Fest in a big way too, so we’re giving away a case of cherries to five randomly selected winners! Yes, a whole case of cherries! (“How much is a case?” you ask. It’s a lot – about 10 pounds of cherries – enough to bake ‘em, preserve ‘em, dry ‘em, freeze ‘em and still have some for snacking on.) All we want to know is what you would do with a whole case of cherries.

Tell us in the comments below by July 11 and you could win!

The fine print: These are red Washington cherries and will be shipped directly to you from our farmer partners. Depending on availability and quality, they may be organic or conventional. No purchase necessary. Promotion ends July 11, 2012, 11:59 PM CDT. Must be a legal resident of the US or Canada (except in Quebec, where it is void) age 18 or older to participate. Taxes on prize, if applicable, are the responsibility of the winner. Employees of Whole Foods Market, Inc., are not eligible.

Void where prohibited.

I think my husband and I could eat almost all of 5lbs of them. Then we'd have cherry pie and I would can the rest. Oh and maybe some grilled meat with a cherry bbq sauce of some sort, or or or or I would basically have a field day with them! Not to mention my chickens get all the pitty pieces of the cherries to pick off the cherry bits left on the pits.

My 4 years old son love them just natural . I will make some Clafoutis with them as well. Clafoutis is a old French recipe that farmers used to make when they returned from the field. It is really healthy with eggs , milk , sugar ... Etc.

Hmm, I just bought a pack yesterday from the Montrose (Houston, TX) store... delicious!!! Now... what would I do with a whole case of cherries?! I would snack on 'em, juice 'em up as a drink, share about 4 pounds with friends, and freeze excess in zip-lock bags. I would juice them up in a blender or make a smoothie with Greek yogurt and agave nectar to drink and recover post-vigorous exercise. Apparently, drinking cherry juice after a run or workout helps reduce muscle damage caused by exercise; the anti-inflammatory, antioxidant compounds in the red fruit called anthocyanins, are also responsible for cherries' bright red color! love 'em :)

What would I do? I would make Super Cherry Delights for my husband who is recovering from prostate cancer and needs all of the healthful goodness that would come from these cherries. This will add a great variety to what he is eating. I would make cherry strudel, hand pies, cherry cookies, and as a sauce for fish and pork dinners. I would also make some cherry cookies for my students who are working diligently on their summer class assisgnments for their college course,I think this would be a great boost for them to stay engaged and interact with each other!

I would feed them to my 8 month old son. Everything that he has eaten up to this point in his life I have made from fresh fruit and vegetables. He tried cherries for the first time a couple weeks ago and loved them! I would definitely use the winning cherries to give him some more of this tasty summer treat (and freeze some for him to have later in the year).

Can't have too many cherries! My favorite fruit since I was a kid with a sweet cherry tree in my backyard. Nothing better than climbing that tree to reach the way-up-high limbs full of cherries. Had to compete with the birds for them, though. Should I win, I will eat so many that my lips will be stained red, along with my fingers. I would make cherry creations and delight in them all.

When I was very small living in San Jose, I used to eat all of the cherry, including the stem. Well now, I still enjoy a nice bowl of fresh cherries or cherry pie. If I should get a case, I would spread some antioxidant joy around as well as, Queritrin--a flavonoid--is rich in cherries, and has been found by researchers to be one of the most potent anticancer agents
