Win a Care Package for Your Pet

By Rebecca Joerres, July 13, 2010  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Rebecca Joerres
Congratulations to JJ and Adrienne for winning their respective cat and dog each a fantastic care package! And thanks to all of you who submitted a response; you gave us lots of ideas for our own pampered pooches and crafty kitties. Does your dog or cat have a favorite treat? We want to know what it is! Carrots, apples, liverwurst…whatever it is, we want to hear about it. We’re giving away two care packages of healthy treats — one to a randomly selected dog owner and the other to a randomly selected cat owner — just enter your pet’s favorite healthy treat as a comment below by July 21st! What’s that…your pet’s favorites aren’t healthy? Well, we won’t disqualify you. Your pet may need the care package more than others! Tell us what treats they eat now, healthy or not. A little over a year ago, I got a puppy. The week before I picked him up, I researched training treats like crazy. I wanted to make sure he started his life off healthy (and obediently) with treats that were free of byproducts and artificial stuff. Once I got him home, I discovered that not only did he LOVE the treats I’d settled on, but he also LOVED frozen broccoli florets. Nothing beats a refreshing frozen broccoli floret on a hot summer day! What’s your pet’s favorite healthy treat? Enter your comment below by July 21 and you just might win a care package for your pet. Note: The winning pet care packages will be created with an array of these products.

My dog Angie has separation anxiety as well as being extra hyper. When we give her these "bully sticks" she just goes to town. you can pick several kinds like braided/nonbraided, short/long.... etc. Once you get past what the product really is they are completely natural and healthy.

My puggle loves whipped cream. Every time she hears the bottle she comes running only to stand on her hind legs and spin in circles while catching it in her mouth.

Every other week my daughter gets a brown rice salmon avocado roll from the Whole Foods near us. She brings it home and uses the chopsticks to poke the salmon out of the end so she can share it with Pinot, our tuxedo cat. While it's a bit of a splurge--- fresh salmon twice a month for a cat treat---we're thrilled our daughter's eating healthy brown rice and avocado. And we know she's going to remember these moments with Pinot years from now.

Our lovable chocolate lab, Buster, has eaten and seemingly enjoyed anything from a huge '80s-style hair scrunchie to a pack of birth control pills! His favorite treats are much healthier though and even helps us cut down on food waste...he loves any fruit or vegetable remnants! Stems from strawberries, ends of carrots, potato skin shavings, cores of apples and ends of asparagus, to name a few! Whenever we get out the cutting board and knife he comes running, ready for his treat.

Our dog Nandi, who can be seen here: http://bit.ly/goodnandi lays underneath the high chair and the dinner table and loves when the kids drop Barbara's Peanut Butter Puffins as they get spilled from the little people above. They are often soggy and coated in milk but she's not picky, I think it gives her more reason to lick her fur later in the day. She is the silent little angel at the house who has been trumped by three little people who have become her food source. So, whether it's a gummy bites vitamin, Puffins, Annie's pasta, she is not picky. She is all about sloppy seconds in our house. She would LOVE her own care package, especially if it was her own!

My dog Toby who is a toy aussie loves chicken. When he won't come when we call... we just ask him if he wants some chicken and he comes running. He is willing to stand on his head for chicken. He just about can too.!!! I can have his undivided attention if I have a handful. I buy chicken without growth hormones , and as natural as possible.

My dog Albert, a boston terrier mix, loves peanut butter in a Kong. It will keep him busy for hours. I'm going to try sticking it in the freezer on hot summer days. Yum!

My two yorkie's love cheese and freeze-dried chicken. Their "grandparents" have also spoiled them to scrambled eggs on weekend mornings. I buy them so many healthy treats that they go nuts over unhealthy low-quality stuff - like kids who are never allowed to eat candy.

My cat Thomas, LOVES strawberries. Organic strawberries from Whole foods are his favorite. He can smell them when I bring them home, and he howls until we give him one (cut in half). If we don't give him one, he will steal it right out of your hand, or behind your back.

My beautiful dog Roxy (Sharpei, Boxer mix) loves fruit and veggies. She eats carrots, lettuce, strawberries, and grapes. She also loves to lick my yogurt cups and eat protein bars. :)For some reason she likes grass too, that is healthy isn't it?

My dog Gunner adores blueberries and nectarines, and...oh, oh, oh, peaches! He's in heaven during the summer months and will lead me to the bananas before breakfast during the winter months. My other dog loves ice above all else and will run to the refrigerator dispenser when he hears it. My cats love thinly sliced roast beef from the deli, the simpler the better (no additives and no seasonings for them, please). And cooked chicken breast, but really, roast beef is where it's at for them.

Cooper, our 6.5yr old Cockapoo loves tomato's and oranges. We can't cut a tomato with out him running in and sitting down while patiently looking up. He waits till the end and then is rewarded. Now with oranges you cant even peel one with out him going ballistic. He runs all over the place waiting for you to share. Sheer entertainment for us I suppose and he gets something he loves.

Oh, my - just ONE?? My cats love everything! I try only to let them have healthy (for cats) foods though. They love lowfat cottage cheese, Cheerios (!), salmon, cooked oatmeal, and they sometimes get into the pantry and steal my bread or bagels or even cookies - not so healthy! My girl kitty LOVES boiled (shelled) edamame and goes crazy when she sees me cut an avocado (although I keep these away from her because I have heard they are toxic to cats.) They are bizarre little kitties with their food preferences!

My dog was very sick when he was rescued he had to go through a tough heartworm treatment, he wouldn't even drink water. The thing I could get him to eat was chicken. So we made chicken snow cones. Some boiled chicken and ice in a food processor, he gobbled it up. Still one of his favorite snacks. Low in Calorie and great for cooling off on hot summer days.

My puppy, Madison, absolutely loves anything that falls on the floor. She is always underfoot when I am cooking just wishing that something will fall. She did not become this way until Thanksgiving when I had friends over that were assisting with the preparation of the Turkey Day meal! She also loves carrots and apples!
