Win a Care Package for Your Pet

Congratulations to JJ and Adrienne for winning their respective cat and dog each a fantastic care package! And thanks to all of you who submitted a response; you gave us lots of ideas for our own pampered pooches and crafty kitties. Does your dog or cat have a favorite treat? We want to know what it is! Carrots, apples, liverwurst…whatever it is, we want to hear about it. We’re giving away two care packages of healthy treats — one to a randomly selected dog owner and the other to a randomly selected cat owner — just enter your pet’s favorite healthy treat as a comment below by July 21st! What’s that…your pet’s favorites aren’t healthy? Well, we won’t disqualify you. Your pet may need the care package more than others! Tell us what treats they eat now, healthy or not. A little over a year ago, I got a puppy. The week before I picked him up, I researched training treats like crazy. I wanted to make sure he started his life off healthy (and obediently) with treats that were free of byproducts and artificial stuff. Once I got him home, I discovered that not only did he LOVE the treats I’d settled on, but he also LOVED frozen broccoli florets. Nothing beats a refreshing frozen broccoli floret on a hot summer day! What’s your pet’s favorite healthy treat? Enter your comment below by July 21 and you just might win a care package for your pet. Note: The winning pet care packages will be created with an array of these products.

My rescue puppy, Sally, loves when I make homemade treats. Her favorites include pumpkin pupcakes (mini dog safe cupcakes) & healthy Kong stuffing. The stuffing consists of lowfat plain yogurt (no sugar or flavorings added), plain applesauce (no sugar added), a bit of honey, and a dash of cinnamon. Stuff in a Kong (or other stuffable toy) & freeze overnight. It's a tasty summer treat! :-)

Our cat, Bowie, loves cheese. She comes running whenever she hears the wrapper opening and will nibble it right out of your hand.

HoneyPie is a big fruit eater, loves the cut up Watermelon I bring home from Whole Food.... must be a basset thing! Wish there were more organic snacks and traing treats available. There are so many good ones out there, like FULL PETENTIAL (HoneyPie loves their sushi treat - with the watermelon as desert) Selection now seems to be to the big names (Newman and Ellen's) - there are more, and you don't need to have a whole aisle, just figure out what moves and is liked. Looking forward to our next visit.

Our Boston Terrier Clive loves his rawhides or beef chews smeared with creamy peanut butter!

My kitties Rigby and Misty love their Halo chicken and salmon cat treats. I make sure to get them from Whole Foods, because they're $3-$4 cheaper than the regular pet stores, and being that they're $10 for a small amount, that price difference really is a big help.

My 17-year-old cat is passionate about cheese. I hate not giving it to her, because I figure she's 17 and I should indulge her while I can, but I know it's not great for her digestive system.

My cat loves Alfredo sauce. Unfortunately she eats well-known commercial foods but its time for a change. We would love to start eating the whole foods way.

Stephanie says …

My Greyhound, Micki, races from the couch anytime she smells roast chicken. Dried salmon is her favorite regular treat.

Jade says …

My dogs love dried chicken breast strips more than anything. Pull one out and they are guaranteed to stop whatever they are doing.

Katie says …

My Border Collie mix loves oatmeal! She definitely gets my leftovers when i'm done. Also, she loves her scrambled eggs (which make her coat look awesome!).

Our rescue dog Sadie, a Lab Pit mix, favorite treat is holding a "down to the scrapings" jar of 365 Organinc Crunchy Peanut Butter between her front paws and licking it clean!

ice cubes and green beans

My puppy, Teddy, is sometimes a cheap treat eater and sometimes an expensive treat eater - he likes ice cubes as treats, as well as Merrick's Beef Fillet pieces. It is pretty cute watching him eat his ice cube - sometimes it sticks to his fur and upper lip, so we walks around with it just hanging there - and then paws it and starts chomping again. I am gluten free so I buy a lot of my foods at Whole Foods - didn't realize they have dog food too - I'll have to check it out when I go this weekend:-)

My dog Olive loves Jerky! Chicken preferably. Kitties like tuna as a treat (Steve and Fred)

Our Cocker Spaniel enjoys peanut butter on a spoon. The kids put the pb on his bone treats. The bone is first licked clean and then eatin; same daily routine. Afterwards, looks like he's pondering about how many times he has licked his nose.

In response to the pet's favorite healthy treat contest: My dog loves carrots. She'll catch them when I toss them to her and practically smiles as she's crunching them.

My little bunny-dog, Esquivel, loves broccoli! And, green peppers! And baby carrots! He goes crazy yipping at me when I am chopping things up at the cutting board, and I always give him a nibble!

I have two dogs. They love Good Life treats -- the fruit and veggie shaped ones... but if you asked my dogs, they'd tell you their favorite treat was toilet paper. I seriously live to have the same excitement my dogs have over snagging just the littlest piece or unraveling the entire roll when I am not looking. Obviously, the fresh, organic treats are more suitable. :)

Dani is my best friend! I try to feed her only the best treats, cute how she eats better than me :) Her favorite treat is peanut butter in her Kong. I say the word and she cocks her head to the side with anticipation :) She is truly one of the best dogs :)

Our dogs all love marrow bones and it keeps their teeth looking pretty white.

Jenifer Stender says …

My dogs love watermelon! They are crazy for any kind of fruit as long as it's pretty sweet. My little chihuahua is especially fond of mangoes.

My dog does not have a properly functioning pancreas so she has to have enzymes added to all of her meals. Due to that, she cannot have any traditional treats as she won't be able to digest them. However, she is allowed to have, and absolutely loves, pineapple, apples, carrots, green beans, and lettuce. These are her healthy snacks!

Chris says …

Did you steal my dog? My hound doggie will eat anything that touches the floor on principle alone.

I make dog biscuits for our dog using King Arthur's Dog biscuit mix. She loves them!

My baby Dakota (aka Dusty) turned 20 yrs old this past March. I tell him he is my Jack LaLane of kitties! HA! He just went to the vet yesterday & they could not believe him. Dusty has rock hard muscles in his legs and that is because he still jumps with ease on the bed, dresser and tv and runs so fast all you see is a gray streak. Since I brought him home I watched the ingredients of what he was eating. Back 20 yrs ago it was harder to find good food than it is today. First, I almost always just put hard regular hard food in a jar and shook it and said "treats" and he would still eat it. I thought it was better than the designed treats. I wish that would work with humans! HA! He also loves to eat boneless breast of chicken and SHRIMP is his favorite. He has devine taste! HA! Of course occasionally he enjoys a bit of "the nip" but he says it is for medicinal reasons! :-) I will say when he was less than a year old, my brother once mistaken refried beans in a small bowl in the fridge for Dusty's cat food and gave it to him. He ate it all! Oh & then there was the time I was cleaning out my fish tank & placed all my fish in a tupperware bowl on the counter. I came back and there were no fish! Dusty denies knowing anything and says there were no cameras so no proof, no time out! He caught 5 mice in 45 minutes, though he does not eat them but plays with them to death. He also had his eye on 2 tree roaches in MS but my gym shoe was quicker. His eyes were a bit bigger than his stomach when he stared down a racoon that got in the house one day! The cops came for that one but he did get Shrimp for being our Hero!

My 4 yr dog,stewie,loves...believe it or not...WHEAT THINS!The 100% whole wheat are his favorite!!

Lori says …

One of my cats loves yogurt to the point that she'll get pretty feisty over it. She'll sit and stare at you intensely for awhile, until she eventually starts pretending that she doesn't care anymore. Then she'll very slowly move her paw up to within 2 inches of the yogurt, pause for a second, and QUICK LIKE A NINJA stick it right into the cup/bowl/what have you and then lick it right off of her paw. It's bizarre. One of my other cats loves chips. Particularly tortilla chips.

Nadja says …

Mine loves anything vegetarian- carrots, broccoli, peas- but her favorite is watermelon!

While my dog and cats only eats organic kibble, they loves their morning squirt. The radar goes off when I go get my first cup of coffee AND I get the whipped cream out of the fridge. Before I can shake the container Teddy Dog, Kacey Cat, and Sophie Cat are all sitting down waiting for their squirt of the cream. :)

My puppies love ice! They will drop anything they are doing when they hear that ice start dropping from the fridge!

I have convinced my dog that ice cubes are treats! It's fantastic - not bad for her and also cheap. She also likes the usuals - especially cheese.

Diablo the Boxer doggy loooooves chicken. You just say the word chicken and his tongues comes out and licks the side of his mouth. I usually give him Wendy's chicken nuggets once a week because it's like his favorite thing in the world. As soon as he smells them he drools all over himself which isn't that great, but he doesn't mind having a napkin applied to his face to clean him up after it's done. No, chicken nuggets aren't really "dog" snacks and are not necessarily the healthiest thing in the world, but hey... We all need to be spoiled once in a while, right? Including Diablo! :-b

My constant companions, Lucy and Penny are two Jack Russell mixed doggies who were rescues. They love any type of chewie or treat, including carrot sticks and apple slices. I try to buy natural rawhide chewies which last longer, and clean their teeth better. Everyone comments on Lucy's teeth as being very clean and pretty. She would say, "More treats!"

Our dog Molly loves lots of foods, but we were still surprised at the speed with which she dispatched of pancakes covered with homemade syrup! We let her have one thinking she wouldn't touch it, but she not only touched it--she devoured it!
