Win a Care Package for Your Pet

Congratulations to JJ and Adrienne for winning their respective cat and dog each a fantastic care package! And thanks to all of you who submitted a response; you gave us lots of ideas for our own pampered pooches and crafty kitties. Does your dog or cat have a favorite treat? We want to know what it is! Carrots, apples, liverwurst…whatever it is, we want to hear about it. We’re giving away two care packages of healthy treats — one to a randomly selected dog owner and the other to a randomly selected cat owner — just enter your pet’s favorite healthy treat as a comment below by July 21st! What’s that…your pet’s favorites aren’t healthy? Well, we won’t disqualify you. Your pet may need the care package more than others! Tell us what treats they eat now, healthy or not. A little over a year ago, I got a puppy. The week before I picked him up, I researched training treats like crazy. I wanted to make sure he started his life off healthy (and obediently) with treats that were free of byproducts and artificial stuff. Once I got him home, I discovered that not only did he LOVE the treats I’d settled on, but he also LOVED frozen broccoli florets. Nothing beats a refreshing frozen broccoli floret on a hot summer day! What’s your pet’s favorite healthy treat? Enter your comment below by July 21 and you just might win a care package for your pet. Note: The winning pet care packages will be created with an array of these products.

Our 3 year old maltise Ozzie came to our home this past Christmas, after being in four other homes. He wasn't bad just living with elderly who could either passed on or went into a nursing home. Since being in our home he has really blossomed and become quite ornery, which we love. We have tried giving him any possible treat...but the only thing he will do a trick for, including sitting, rolling over, walking and dancing....is...........drum roll.............. Carrot sticks. I have never had a dog like veggies but Ozzie is a true carrot freak.....LOL

Our cats love cheese!

My dogs favorite treat is a homemade organic cookie that I make for her called "snickerpoodles"! She loves them and likes to share with her humans because they are delicious for humans too..haha

Bev says …

Penny beagle loves shredded chicken breasts... I cook a weekly batch in the crock pot and throw in fresh herbs from the garden along with a clove of garlic or onion. Good for humans, too.

Andrea says …

My dog Lulu LOVES apples. She must have super hearing, because if I'm cutting an apple or biting into one she will fly down the stairs and into the kitchen. She automatically sits at my feet like a perfect little statue and waits for me to give her a piece. :)

My Yellow Lab Flicka LOVES catching pieces of frozen broccoli followed by a Good Buddy Rawhide bone... great for getting rid of those pesky pieces of florets between her teeth.

Laurie Berkin says …

My Rhodesian Ridgeback, Roxy, loves blueberries and she gets them as special treats. She also likes carrots!

Mel says …

Ginger (choc lab) loves peanut butter first & foremost! Also goes crazy for cantelope & watermellons. Just the smell of any of those will send her into a frenzy!

We have a 12-week old puppy that we've had since the second week of June. Right now we're right in the middle of house breaking. We got her from the local city animal shelter and when we brought her home and took her to the vet we discovered that she had contracted all kinds of parasites and worms. We had to feed her pills twice a day for three weeks! Some of the pills were quite large for a six pound puppy, so they weren't appealing to her. We buried each pill in a piece of cheese and she chomped it right up! I was even able to work in training her to "sit" to get her "treat." She's also a big fan of lamb - we give her little bits of the scraps when we make lamb chops. Since she's still underweight for her age and breed (which is technically "mutt") we don't mind giving her the table scraps! :)

Lola the Pekingese (full name Dutchess Lola VonSassypants) is a rescue we found at Durham Animal Protection Services. She's a little pup, but was in a big dog kennel because it was the only space left, and I totally would have missed her had it not been for her little tongue, which peeks out CONSTANTLY! Miss Lola LOVES all things healthy - her favorite treats are blueberries and raspberries, carrots, chicken jerky, and broccoli. :o)

Our kitties go crazy whenever we use the electric can opener! The think all we use this for is to open up cans of tuna. Anytime we eat albacore tuna, we leave some left in the cans and they go wild licking the can! What happy kitties we have after that!

Liliana Pava says …

My two dogs love carrot treats.

Donna Heggie says …

Do frogs count? Because that seems to be my dog Bernie's "treat du jour". Not very healthy, I know, but definitely "green"!!

My cat Roni used to love tuna juices. When I would open the can, he would come running. Unfortunately, he died 2 days ago and I miss him dearly. My other cat, Lucie, really enjoys sharing milk with me. I have a glass of milk before bed and she'll come over and drink some, too.

Our cat loves cooked pasta! We give her plain wheat pasta and she thinks it is the best treat ever!

Our puppy, Ritter, LOVES Wellshire Kids Chicken Franks. We buy them at our local Vienna, Va Whole Foods and chop then into little bits that he gets as treats when training and on walks. Since the hot dogs are gluten and preservative free the whole family feels good about eating them too...although Ritter prefers to keep them for himself!

Laurel says …

Our dog Wilson loves pumpkin! When I roast our pumpkins in the fall to make pumpkin pie he goes wild and won't leave me alone! So I started making him treats with chicken, pumpkin, and oatmeal...saying he can't get enough of them is a HUGE understatement!

Our beagle, nosey, was rescued by our granddaughter a couple of years ago in the middle of an indiana winter. After unsuccessfully trying to find her owner, she is part of our family. She loves peanut butter & banana chips, and we think she would live on chicken or lamb jerky.

My Great Dane just likes the basic milkbone. She'll eat her food, then walk over to the jar they're kept in and just stare at it until someone gives in and gives her one. She'll also catch it up in the air when thrown, which is funny for such a big dog! :)

Jami Walsh says …

Morgan likes green beans, but she'll do just about anything for a carrot.

I buy plain yogurt and organic pumkin (in a can) and/or natural peanut butter from Whole Foods, mix it together and freeze in it small ice cube trays. A couple of each of those are Buddy's favorite. Buddy is a 4 month old yellow lab.

My dog layla goes crazy for avocado!

Sarah says …

My three nutty pomeranians love their daily treat of "nom noms for pup pups," the calling out of which makes them spring to their feet in pure joy. It consists of an organic whole chicken cooked down with water and carrots. Once cooked, all bones are removed, the carrots mashed in and resulting broth spooned over. There is than enough of the chicken that it lasts for at least a week and is more affordable that canned pet food. It is a delicious and healthy treat for my furry loved ones and serving it is one of the favorite parts of my day.

Amber Harman says …

My dogs will do pretty much anything for a Dogswell Jerky Treat. They love them!

Bev says …

Our rescue Rottie loves ice cubes, bananas, apples and carrots. When I'm cooking dinner and he hears me cutting up veg, he sits by the sit of me and drools until he gets some vegetables!

Tiffany says …

My dog absolutely loves carrots! We have to spell the word if we are talking about it or else she goes crazy! Any time we go into the refrigerator she runs over, she gets really excited if we go in the vegetable drawer, then if those orange vegetables come out, she jumps, runs around in circles, and barks!

Samena says …

My Jack Russell, Eddie, loves bell peppers and onions. I guess he gets it from his mom :) When he hears the knife on the cutting board, he bolts through the house and waits patiently (well sort of, minus the whine) for something to fall. I'm not sure onions are good for him.

Dario says …

I have two schnauzers and they loved this new treat that you have at the store in chelsea. Don’t remember the brand but it is apple flavor and it doesn’t have a lot of calories. They love them!

Laura says …

Well my American Bulldog named Nouba loves ice just plain old ice. She goes crazy over liver treats, Another favorite is potato chip with peanut butter, and my friend gives her cheese puffs when I am not looking. She has never liked begging strips. But if you fill a small child with peanut butter I think she will like that. Now the cat in the house named Kramer goes crazy over Nouba's wet food. He does not like any other treats so his treat is a small amount of her food.I have taught him to sit and stay outside the kitchen while I prepare the morning feeding. Then on command they both go to respective food bowls and eat.

Our younger cat, Diesel, goes crazy for vanilla ice cream. Whenever we are eating ice cream on the couch, he is right there looking at us or head-butting us for a lick or two. He never wants much, just a little bit on a spoon :) Our older cat, Simon, has always been a picky eater and not much into "human food" but he definitely has an affection for bacon!
