I love to savor plain, unadorned cherries at room temperature, one at a time. The season, like summer here in the northeast, is short and sweet...and fresh cherries are one of the few fruits only available in season, making taste all that much sweeter.

My favorite way to enjoy cherries is sitting outside, eating them plain, and keeping three or four pits in my mouth to play with after I'm done eating.

Our neighbors had a tree and would share with the neighbors. I remember standing on a ladder trying to pick as many as possible because my mom made awesome cherry pie! I made my first one (by myself) when I was 10 - not as good as hers, but I was pretty proud of it.

I purchased a cherry pitter so my two-year old granddaughter could enjoy cherries out of hand. Together, we pitted cherries and had a wonderful, fun-filled delicious afternoon. It doesn't get much better that that.

I have fallen in love with cherries - from a bowl, in a pie, in a cobbler, on a tart. Maybe my current favorite is in a clafoutis.

I love to make Sharbat-E-Olu Bolu, an Afghan recipe consisting of a Shrub Drink and Conserve. The sour cherry drink is refreshing and healthful The conserve is spiced with cardamon and lemon juice and is a great topping for yogurt or ice cream.

I enjoy just eating fresh cherries, and also making cherry pie. This year, I have canned them in Kirschwasser for a kind of homemade maraschino cherry, they are delicious!
