Win a Trip to Costa Rica!

Do you like tropical adventures, delicious bananas, sustainable agriculture, long walks on the beach, Piña Coladas and getting caught in the rain? Then this is an opportunity you don’t want to miss! We’re teaming up with EARTH University to give you a chance to win a trip to Costa Rica to visit EARTH University in Guácimo, Limón. Five winners will embark on a seven-day Costa Rican adventure where they will:
  • Experience, first-hand, how EARTH University is preparing young students to become tomorrow’s leaders in sustainable agriculture, responsible business and community development.
  • Visit with the farmers who produce the rich and creamy EARTH University bananas and learn how their innovative growing methods are helping to save our planet’s precious resources.
  • Explore vibrant Costa Rica, relax on the majestic beaches of Puerto Viejo, sample local cuisine and cruise along the island’s southern coast in search of dolphins.
EARTH University is a nonprofit, international university dedicated to the sustainable development of the tropics through education, research and outreach. Whole Foods Market started selling fresh EARTH University bananas in 2007, then added their fresh pineapples, and was excited to begin offering the new frozen EARTH University Pineapple and EARTH University Banana Chunks in early 2011. The sales of these fresh and frozen fruits help fund scholarships, and finance research and investment in organic and sustainable agriculture. All of Whole Foods Market’s EARTH University offerings are part of our Whole Trade® Guarantee, which ensures fair prices are paid for products, better wages and working conditions for growers and sound environmental practices. Visit the contest page on our website for more details and be sure to enter on that contest page (not in the blog comments) by September 30th, 2011. No purchase necessary!

Each summer -actually from spring to fall - I'm one of the volunteers working with the 6 - 12 year olds in a summer camp "Wonder Garden" program. It's a challenge, but one which brings such remarkable growth - not only for the seeds, but the kids as well. Would love to bring the experience of Costa Rica to the children of Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Thanks for the opportunity to "just imagine."

I went to Costa Rica several years ago and I didn't see what what I wnated to see and that was all the birds. I said at that time that we had more birds in our front yard than I saw there. We should have gone to the national parks and I didn't know that. Since then, almost all of our birds have gone, probably due to the West Nile virus and it is really sad. We used to have every kind of bird that one can see in Northern California. I would love to go back and visit the natural areas instead of just the parts that they take tourists to.

As an energy healer and teacher of global consciousness, this green trip would be pure joy! Every day we make a multitude of choices, most small and some significant but all important. For who ever is given this opportunity may they be transformed and then choose to share what was received. Peace to all on this International Day of Peace.

The opportunity to pass onto our youth from the Boys & Girls club of Pasadena the importance of taking care of mother earth and growing crops here in our garden is priceless. With limited access to our families in the food dessert here in Pasadena, we need to teach our youth how to produce organic within their communities, especially those who do not have access to fresh foods. Pasadena is a tale of two cities and working with those who need us most is something I am passionate about.

Huistory, the Mayan and Inca, civilizations have great influence on what we do today. Though the world has changed many of the older ways of living and growing food still remain. A visit would be a learning experience.

As a family we are beginning to grow more of our food, aided by our 4 and 5 year old grandchildren. They are learning to love tomatoes off the vine, helping weed around the plants, give the plants "good food" with our compost from grass clippings and other organics. We would welcome the chance to learn from the ticos in C.R. how they are increasing their yields without pesticides and chemicals. I am taking espanol for the last four years so I would be able to chat in spanish with the kids! Grandma

My friend has told me wonderful things about Costa Rica. I would love to be the lucky winner. Love to learn the culture, food, and sustainable agriculture. This is an experience I can not gain from traveling on my own.

I think this would be a great opportunity to learn more about organic and sustainable living. I think that it is important to learn where your food comes from and what work goes into producing it. I would love to see all the hard work at EARTH University and help out in creating new life and new produce. I would then take what I learned there and bring it back to my humble garden. I am raising my daughter vegetarian as I am, and this opportunity would give us the chance to see first hand the importance of sustainibility.

Farmers, in general, are not paid enough for their hard work in growing our food supply. Those in third world countries get paid even less in growing tasty nutritious vegetables and fruits for our consumption.
